Usage Based Billing approved, Canadian govt shoots it down, more developments to come

That was disgusting see how much direction and focus the CRTC takes from Bell. The major players in the CRTC really need to be tossed out to the street.

This was amazing.

Why did you do any of this stuff? Bell.
Is the net congested? I dunno Bell said it was.
Why isn't IPTV included in the caps? IPTV uses a different part of the net tubes. (LOL)

I hope the govt. tells them to stuff their review and just reverses it.

I loved when he said that Bell would use the extra money from UBB to improve the network. I'm sure that will happen.

Damn, missed it. My boy Mike Lake (my MP) was apparently tearing him a new you know what. I really hope someone recorded that!

It's ridiculous how agencies meant to regulate corporations are completely subservient to those very corporations. Corporatism is the ruin of us all.

Bell: well you see if we improved the caps we might be expected to reduce our punishments on customers, and if we did that how would we upgrade the network next time? So we are going to run this copper into the ground while collecting fees from consumers and then we will talk to the government about funding improvements to our network.

I don't see how the fuck this gets reversed after this unless your politicians don't want to get re-elected.

Keep the pressure up on them Canada-age.

Indeed, but someone brought a good point on Twitter:

KvF is the politicians scapegoat for their own failure to develop a digital policy.

I won't be surprised if he resigns.

Truth. Companies like Bell and Rogers don't want to compete, they want you to have no real choice and take as much from each consumer as they possibly can. I also Masse's comment of how they are trying to turn the internet into a penalty based system to prevent people from making use of the internet. And how there is no real congestion issues if the system is designed to prevent users from using the internet at any time no matter if the network is at peak or not.

The CRTC did not come out with transparency nor a desire to do what is in the country's best interest. If it is left to an internal review of the decision very little will change in the course of sixty days. I hope Tony Clement isn't pacified by their review stance and holds firm to his claim. Failing that, there should be a Governmental review of the situation at the very least. The issue is too important to stamp with Good-Enough or Hope-This-Works.

No, she didn't. She talked about how her old biotech company serviced a South Korean one by sending large amounts of data to them. She mentioned nothing about their superior internet.

Definitely NPD gets my vote. It's going to be the biggest voting turnaround, I guarantee!

I want to vote with my conscience and vote NDP, but they're never going to win and I want Harper out desperately.

Pretty much this. I don't care if they don't have the experience in running a country. I'd rather have a party who are looking out for the peoples interests even though they might make mistakes than a seasoned party looking to screw me over when they don't think anyone is watching. I'll take another look at the parties come election time but right now I'm pretty pissed off that we are getting so weakly defended by the major parties. There were several good questions from several MPs from the main parties but it felt more like they were just there to be the sharks at the feeding frenzy.

If everyone thinks like that, of course the NDP won't win.

Vote NDP, tell other people why it's a good idea. The Liberals are too weak now to win anyways, but a Liberal+NDP coalition could rule, giving us a best of both worlds scenario.

We could even get a merging of the parties at some point, it needs to happen. The right merged their two parties to take power, the the left should do the same.

Boy are you new NDP voters in for a surprise come election time. :/
Hey my NDP MP won last time and I think he can win again this time. He was also used Net Neutrality as one of his focal points.

Not really. I am sure most of us know that NDP are a big of a joke when it comes to getting any seats in parliament. But the isn't the point to vote for the party you think should get elected and not for the party that's more likely to beat out the conservatives in your riding.

For those keeping tracking, I'd e-mail these MPs and let them know they've been doing a good job.

My letters have been looking like this with a bit of variety.

Mr. _____,

I'd like to thank you for sticking up for consumers today, and being one of the few for actually understanding the absurd issue we face. You told it like it is, and our internet infrastructure has become a backward in terms of both speed and cost.
I hope you continue to to press your colleagues on this, because technology, freedom and information and the internet as a whole is a critical factor in the future of Canada. We should not allow huge telecoms with a variety of conflict of interest, dictate.

Again, I'd like to thank you for sticking up for we, the people. We need more like you.

I'd vote Liberal over NDP, seeing as how they has a slightly greater than 0% chance

To liberals, internet is series of tubes that can be split up into dozen of tubes and the heavy users use all of these tubes while regular users use only a few of them while the rest is dedicated to home phone and cable TV.

No thanks.

I don't feel sorry because, as a chairman overlooking this issue, he came in so unprepared for today's discussion. I know the review was called in on short notice, but he's just not the appropriate person to publicly represent this committee.

He should've seen the OpenMedia.ca petition blowing up and catching traction weeks ago when it started hitting critical mass.

He should count his lucky stars that today wasn't a total beatdown. There were representatives just as unprepared as him.

there are many shades of political opinion in the United States, Phil explained; and one of the shadiest of these is the liberal: 10 degrees to the left of center in good times, 10 degrees to the right of center when it affects them personally

I'm with you
