Usage Based Billing approved, Canadian govt shoots it down, more developments to come

there are many shades of political opinion in the United States, Phil explained; and one of the shadiest of these is the liberal: 10 degrees to the left of center in good times, 10 degrees to the right of center when it affects them personally

I'm with you

I don't know who Phil is, but he's full of shit.

I don't feel sorry because, as a chairman overlooking this issue, he came in so unprepared for today's discussion. I know the review was called in on short notice, but he's just not the appropriate person to publicly represent this committee.

He should've seen the OpenMedia.ca petition blowing up and catching traction weeks ago when it started hitting critical mass.

He should count his lucky stars that today wasn't a total beatdown. There were representatives just as unprepared as him.

Yeah, this can't be emphasized enough. I can't even think of a way to explain how wholly ignorant he is of the things his committee regulates to anyone that didn't see the hearing.

Watching CBC now and all you hear from the liberal reps is "blah blah blah its the conservatives fault". They aren't looking for solutions to problems just to score election points. It seems these interviews are just going to be bullet points from the original meeting.

What do you expect from politicians?

Talking heads on television will tell us nothing. They don't care about the consumer either, they're just looking to stick the blame, and if coming up with a solution will grant them votes.. then maybe that.

Well I don't care why they help us, as long as they help us.

The best part about this is that all three parties have the same view, so Bell & Rogers won't win this. They might win a couple of million dollars worth of tax cuts, but they won't win UBB.

"IPTV doesn't use the internet" is my personal favourite.
It's not delivered over the public internet. Bell does however throttle the internet to ensure that IPTV is delivered over their infrastructure smoothly.

Even if we do win UBB though, we can't stop there. We need better infrastructure and networks. And cell phones should be more closely looked at, although the new small companies coming into the market is a start.

Election issues people, stand up for these, and write your MPs if this is what you believe is priority.

Was it about watching them online and can't wait to pay for the overages? Also was that a PC, Liberal, and NDP all agreeing?
Yep. And I'm glad they all got a chuckle out of it.

I think it's pretty clear from this one, single meeting just how much influence Bell and Rogers have over the CRTC. Fuck, it's not even influence, all they have to do is ask and the CRTC will roll over. Plenty was said that makes the case for a complete CRTC overhaul.

Bell: We're fine giving small ISPs a 25% discount.
Bell: Rogers gives small ISPs 0% discount so we change our mind and want to do the same.
CTRC: 15% discount sounds fair then.

I love how they think it's ok to give ISP resellers 0% discount so they lose money for offering the same prices as Bell/Rogers.

Bah you're more Canadian than I am.

I'm glad for the victory.

I emailed my MP and signed that petition long ago when Teksavvy brought it to my attention.

To be honest, I'm surprised it even got this far. Perhaps people didn't think the CRTC would be this useless or people were lazy.

Now if only Ontarians had fought the HST like the BC people did...or had Canada stood up and fought the GST.

The guy's English was hard enough to understand. If you're French then it must suck equally when he's speaking in French.

You're right, his french sucks too. There are options for English-French-Floor (no translators) on the right of the page.

Someone needs to write up how IPTV really works (the carving of the infrastructure to give priority to IPTV over the rest of the internet) and send it to those few MPs who showed that they had a clue today.
