Use a PNG with transparency as your PSN profile pic

You've been able to set a profile pic via the PlayStation App for nearly a year now but when the feature was first introduced, it didn't retain PNG transparency.

Custom profile pics don't support .PNG transparency unfortunately.
But now it does!

1. Download the PlayStation App for iOS/Android and sign into your PSN account.
2. Tap your current avatar in the top-right of the app and select Profile.
3. Tap Edit Profile > Change Profile Picture > Select Photo and choose a PNG image you've downloaded.

This 1024x1024 image worked great for me.

Do we have to link a FB account to get this done? And can anyone in your FL see this new custom Avatar? If so this is some cool shit.

I don't think anyone can see it on your friends list, right? You have to do a Real Name Request (And have them accept, or you accept their request) correct?

Edit:

Regardless of the fact not everyone can see it, I'm happy with my new Mother Avatar. :>

I had no idea this was a thing. I'm literally going to end up spending an hour of my time thinking of the perfect image.

Yeah, I just checked and you're right, they have to be a 'close friend', in other words accepted a real name request. Hopefully an option's added to share your picture with all, separately from your real name.

One advantage for yourself, even if you're not 'close friends' with anyone is the regular PSN avatar gets stretched for the profile pic space but if you use a high res image like I did it looks much better.

edit: It doesn't downscale the image very well for display at smaller sizes however. You might be able to get around this by not having any high contrast edges in the picture.

People will only see it if you share your real name with them, or (I think) link your Facebook account and set things to public. The former, for sure.

The close friends restriction is a downer but at least I see a cool pic and I guess they are avoiding porn profile pics getting out of hand

Oh so you can make your custom avatar public to everyone as long as you use your Facebook avatar, no request needed?

I'm not 100% sure. But PSN shows me "People You May Know," when I go to Friend List, and I see non-standard avatars (photos) and real names, so I assume those guys linked a Facebook account and changed their settings to public.

Yep. It works. I wish they'd let us just select custom images for everyone to see. It's not as though reporting people for abusive images is hard.

Can you elaborate why this works in this thread? Is the title misleading?

On topic, this is pretty nifty. Although I am using my Xbox One avatar on Steam and PS account at the moment, I like the consistency.

Not necessarily Facebook, there is a setting in Privacy to allow Friends of Friends to see real pic and name.

Also, holy sh*t OP, 72 platinums?

Good to hear. I made a version of my avatar with a false background to look transparent because it annoyed me.

Pretty cool though I'm currently happy with the avatar I chose for my close friends to see.

Still, if I ever change it, maybe I'll go with a transparent one next time.

I don't know how you could possibly have entered this thread expecting something other than what was explicitly stated right there in the title, unless you're drunk

It's because only those you list as "close friends" can see it, apparently. I had the same reaction, excitement quickly followed by disappointment. I understand Sony's reasoning, but it really takes the fun out of something like this. I could set my NeoGAF avatar as my PSN one now whenever I feel like it, but no one I didn't explicitly "filter" would see it as that.

Quick! Someone make me a Vice City icon.

Dumb question, do I need to be PS+ for this?(Even I want to roast myself for not knowing.)

It's one thing to have custom avatars, it's another to have them only visible to people you share your personal information with. It's a cool feature but the fact that I have to share my real name with friends for them to see it kinda spoils it for me personally.

Spoils what exactly? The fact that people you don't know cant see how awesome your profile pic is? Lol

Don't get it.

It would be better if I didn't have to share my real name with my psn friends (most of whom I've never seen in real life) for them to see my profile picture. Why not just allow everyone to see the custom avatar without having to share my real name?

I don't get why you don't get it.

It's like having your customized GAF avatar can only be seen by mods. It's not that hard to see why people are disappointed.

Wow, what a shit comparison.

I'd say it's more like the lurkers not seeing your avatar.

So it's pretty much an attention thing then?

My problem is that my transparent picture stops being transparent when transported from my dropbox to my phone. How can I stop this?

You can change your real name to anything you want.

Not really.

I still don't quite get why you find it so hard to find that the limited thing is disappointing to people, unless you're being purposefully obtuse.

I never even knew you could upload custom avatars. But it being only visible to those requested, makes this not worthwhile for me to do.

I can only see custom profile pics of people I accept real name requests from. Can you set it so everybody sees it?
