Valve announces a new portable, Steam Deck

Playing PC games on a laptop in the bed or even in a couch is almost impossible, imo, and I'm not 21 either, I'm 45 šŸ˜‹
It really isn't. Unless, for some reason, putting a laptop on a chair is too much for you. I play PC games on mine all the time, with a wireless lapboard, and it runs perfectly.

So how much more powerful than the Switch is this?

the symmetrical controls sold me - not even kidding, thank god they didnt copy the xbox controller design

The more i read about this absolutely batshit craY device the more i want it..
Gaf also needs hardcore DECK-FANBOIS

Now to see if (and when) they will allow pre orders to open up here in Australia, cause I am VERY interested in this little beast!

Honestly? Entirely possible, especially if it comes in the next year or so. Here's hoping they eke out a little more than a 4-5x jump if they want it to be a true successor, but I won't hold my breath.

I do hope it's not this chunky at least, not that I mind it on the SteamDeck.

Mainstream cellphone socs have gone 7,5x in gpu performancensince 2015 when the X1 was released. In 2023 3nm production at TSMC will be in full swing, so 5nm lines should be available at the lower price Nintendo usually prefers .

For anyone curious how well Windows games will run, you can check this website that lists the compatibility with games: https://www.protondb.com
Better than I thought! šŸ‘Linux gaming has come a long way.
Still lacks Gamepass games though which makes this an expensive route with double dipping compared to just install Windows and treat it like a secondary portable Windows box. I hope a reviewer take the plunge and do the OS swap and tell the world how it went!

Just imagine how fucking annoying the raspberry pi fanboys where during those nintendo mini classic consoles.. stating how much you can do with a pi.

move over to DECK.. so much more possible.

Yeah I really wish they'd put at least 128GB eMMC in the base model just so it could fit at least 1 heavy AAA game on internal storage.

The eMMC model shouldn't even exist at all, in any capacity. Even ignoring it can't hold a single install of many modern PC games, with a $130 price premium, surely even the basic 256GB NVMe is a ~2000+Gbps drive while the 512GB is 5000+Gbps. This would put them up to 10x (or 20x) faster than most eMMC's.

Let me just use this Post to send a Prayer for everyone pre-ordering tomorrow. May everyone on GAF who wants one get one. And for those that won't get to pre-order until Sunday. Maybe you can still get a Switch OLED.

The eMMC model is justifiable if you aren't a AAA PC gamer. NVMe speeds aren't necessary for every game.

Please make it a little less autistic and it will sell 10x the amount. Currently it has a face only a Linux user would love.
Eh, replace the right stick with a touchpad and then maybe I can get behind this revision. Regardless, hands-on previews say it's really comfortable to hold and use, so I'm not to worried about the look.

In what twilight zone universe you expect a small battery powered device to run for more than 5 minutes, if you expect it to play something Doom Eternal at mid/high settings @UHD?

C'mon bruv, your argument isn't based in reality.
Yeah this device isn't for me I guess (also isn't Apple's ARM architecture supposed to solve all these battery life vs performance issues? I guess that's still a ways off or still too expensive?).

For me it doesn't fill a void or fix an issue that needed solving. I have my PC, I have my Switch and other consoles. For me it wouldn't add anything of value compared to what I already own.

yes, they are pointless. I'm not going to play an RTS on this thing, give us a smaller option for people who care about portability.

I am kinda with you but it absolutely needs a track pad to just function as a PC. There are a ton of steam games that you can play with a controller that have those dumb launchers that require you to click play with a mouse for instance.

It's not a pre-order. It's intent to order and they'll send invites later this year in order of reservation by region.

So this is what Gabe had up his sleeve.

Very interested to see how current games perform on this thing. Might be worth it alone for the amount of indies that don't make it to consoles.

It has a touch screen and even if it didn't I regularly quick swap to mouse control using thumbstick to navigate mouse only UI.

Oh, gotcha. Interesting. Hopefully it's not like that Platinum Blue White Dragon card I tried to reserve.

Game was postponed and was never released. They said they felt they had a good core of a game and postponed the game to add mid tier and end game content. It comes out end of next month. Even with that they have changed a lot and the game is a lot different. There is a open beta coming up which you get access to if you preorder. You could check it out and then refund the game if you don't like it.

Your right, it hasn't been released yet. I remember playing it sometimes last year. Haven't touched it since.

Sitting in a couch curved over a laptop on a chair or table playing with mouse and keyboard or keyboard and touch pad is uncomfortable and janky, that's how I started gaming on PC so I've already done that, it's just not for me.

This is kind of amazing?
The level of performance will be enough for AAA games at decent quality and framerate, it can do everything PC can do (which means everything - games, work, netflix, porn, emulation..everything), and it costs just 50 bucks more than Switch, which looks completely ancient and useless now.

I am in.

What are you talking about? You don't sit 'curved over a laptop on a chair'. You put the laptop on the chair and lie back on the couch. Your entire take here is extremely bizarre, it's as though I'm having to explain how chairs work.

Color me extremely interested.

My Steam library portably and easily connecting to a TV sounds fucking hawt.

Portable Half-Life, HL2, Dead Space, Max Payne 2 and 3, etc, etc? Sounds sexy as fuck.

Most games that don't work at all are multiplayer games with anti-cheat software, but since Valve said they're working to get DRM to work on Linux soon that list will grow significantly.

Since gamepass is Windows exclusive it won't work on Linux, but there's nothing that can be done about that on the Linux side since it's a Microsoft service.

Actually, I bet you could dual-boot Windows and Linux on it, so you still have the intended Steam experience on Linux and can boot into Windows for gamepass.

I guess it's good for people who want more powerful handheld, but I bought my Switch for games rather than power.

It seems to be a way to gauge interest in the product. Kinda shitty because even if you reserve and pay 5 bucks tomorrow, Valve isn't obliged to actually ship the product in December.

I wonder if MS are interested in developing a portable Xbox Series S in the future :messenger_crystal_ball:
If this hardware profile does really well, I expect a few other major players like Microsoft to follow suit.

The controls are majestic, symmetry is everything when it comes to good controls, the playstation like sticks on the same plane I adore. Not to mention most previews praise the controls, this is nothing like that bizzare steam controller. Man this thing has so much potential.

Lol it's in the middle of the night here you need to draw it in paint or something, the picture I'm getting in my sleepy head doesn't look comfortable at all compared to slouching with a portable console
