Valve announces a new portable, Steam Deck

Serious question. Will I be able to play Total War games on this bad boy, including older games like Med 2. If so this is a day one purchase.

Looks like an interesting product, I hope it goes well for them for once. Valve don't always have the best luck with products.

What I really want is for them to take these enhancements and make Steam Controller 2.

Price doesnt compensate for the lack of storage and not even custom gaming OS.
So you wanted them to make their own completely different OS for which every game studio would have to specifically port the game to so there would be almost no game at launch?
That's great. Instead we get SteamOS and can play near everything on it on day 1. That's greater.

And you can add 1TB card for storage. Or get the bigger storage tier.

I actually like it, but SteamOS seems like it'll reduce how many games you have access to, also I'd imagine installing a different OS, such as windows, will cause compatability issues with the extra buttons and trackpads.

Well it is linux so they must use some emulation for non native linux apps because they say EVERYTHING works which was never the case with linux

Proton does make a lot of games playable on linux but it's not the entire library as they're claiming. Any game with anti-cheat doesn't work at all, such as PUBG or Apex. Valve claims to be working directly with anti-cheat companies to get it sorted before launch, though, so we'll see.

If you want to see what games are currently compatible from your library (or any game via search), check out ProtonDB.

The positioning reminds me of the Wii U gamepad

The only thing thats a concern is the height of the holding position. Gravity will be pulling down on that thing with the weight in the bottom. Can see it being fatgiuing for longer sessions. Price point is great though. I hope those little squares are touchpads for FPS etc.

Thanks, I was wondering if I should upgrade from my laptop to this but it sounds like it's not worthwhile. What's the Steam Deck, 2tflops?
they claim 1.65tf which is not too bad but also it's running very low resolution and your laptop is probably fullhd, so steam deck will be less demanding.
If you only game, goind steam deck might not be a bad idea

Guys, would this be an upgrade for a i5 4460 + gtx960 2GB? I Just need my pc for strategy games, but if i could have a handheld on the go plus a strategy pc upgrade that would be nice.

I play at 1080p ultrawide and this is the display i would be hooking it up to. Not sure if this thing can play warhammer total war 2 decently at this resolution though.

I am very interested in this. Over the years handheld gaming during commute or on lazy days became a real proposition for me.

Right now only other option is Switch which do not have official presence in india. Well I guess neither will Steam hardware. :(

You must REALLY hate the Switch OLED then.

Nope, Nintendo isn't going for power. They're delivering Nintendo style experiences. That said, I may have spoken a little too soon here. It sounds like this may not be just a device to play Steam PC titles, but may actually be getting exclusives made for it with possible dev kits.

That makes it a very big threat to Switch if the games are actually there.

Yeah, my laptop is full HD but it's connected to my 4K TV. I'm assuming games at 1080p would look better on my TV than games at 720p.
lol

You shouldn't expect exclusive titles for this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm always connected to the internet so I'm not sure, but doesn't Steam need you to login once every two weeks to work offline? So if I have the handheld laying around for a month, and then take it on the trip with no internet, I won't be able to play my Steam games?

Aaaaaaah why wont they accept preorders for scandinavia aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh

Also, durantes thoughts on this (dude who fixed dark souls on pc and now runs a porting studio)

haha of course. It is crazy to think, if you had rtx card, 1080p games could look almost as good as 4k games with dlss

This is the sort of think I expect Sony to do for PS5 remote and PSNow
Don't hold your breath.

Sony will support remote play on mobile.
PS Now streaming on mobile too eventually.

This Steam Deck will be able to use PS Now streaming btw.
And it'll play all of Sony's games they port to Steam, like Horizon.

Swtich is 400 gram and switch lite is... 277 !!!! wow
I am kinda considering switch lite. Is it good if I don't care about docking ?

Also just noticed. Switch lite is 4 times cheaper

This announcement made Nintendo look like a chump. Well deserved too.
Hopefully this lights a fire under Nintendo. They mentioned they were in this for the long haul, we shall see.

It's very clear with their price point they are going for the Switch's market this time. This will take a while. With the proper marketing this could be killer.

This is a very intriguing proposition. I´m a 100% console player for years now. The current prices for good PC parts definitely scared me even further away from getting a proper PC again. But at the same time, I would love to have one and to play some PC exclusives.

This thing is affordable, can access a great gaming library from the start and is technically advanced enough to play modern triple A games on medium to high settings! This is big and it fills a market that Nintendo was never able to step in. If the final reviews are good I´m going to bite the bullet and get one.

Edit:
Question to all of you PC and XBOX folks. Is it possible to access Gamepass through Steam?

No, but I think you'll be able to access Xbox gamepass for PC anyway as you can do anything you can do on a pc. You're not restricted to Steam.

Having a "say" in how it performs is just a way for PC enthusiasts to boast about how powerful their rig is and how long is their neckbeard.
I have an i5-based tablet hybrid UMPC with an HD4000 iGPU as my only "gaming" machine. It is rare for any semi-modern game to even consider the kind of machine I have as a possible hardware choice. I played through and completed XCOM2 by taking a sledgehammer to the config files and pushing the game's visuals lower than they were ever intended to be. I experiment with settings and play games at resolutions as low as 540p and 640x360. It's horrendous to look at, by any measure, but as long as I can make out the UI and the gameplay is engaging, I don't really care - having a say in how a game looks, and therefore performs, is far more than boasting material for me.

..even if it might look like it, with the (subjective) horrors I just described. :P
