Valve introduces $100 virtual engagement ring in Team Fortress 2.

I'm all for stuff like this, if idiots want to blow $100 on a fake ring let them, especially if it means I get to play the game for free.

It's not exactly the same thing, but I just bought one of the Magic the Gathering games for Xbox and it has similar DLC, the game gives you a bunch of content and you can pay to unlock stuff faster or get shiny versions of your cards. The game itself is $10 which is cool since it seems like many XBLA games are $15 these days. The weapons skins in Gears 3 is another recent example (though in that case the content DLC is still kind of pricey).

Hopefully going forward more games will come out at lower prices with aesthetic DLC, seems like an everybody wins situation to me.

If it were anyone but Valve the outrage would be of epic proportions.

EDIT: Don't really care about this personally. Just thought it was amusing.
Guys guys guys, here's my opinion, but in the off chance it doesn't necessarily apply, just know that I was throwing it out there for the hell of it.

Hahaha, absolutely brilliant.

There are always those with too much money on their hands constantly looking for increasingly ridiculous ways to spend it.

There are plenty companies that do it and don't get hate of epic proportions, just people speaking for and against them much like this very thread. Dunno how anyone can say they get a free pass or similar when themselves are clearly speaking against them, proving that statement false. The issue pops up very often in the iOS gaming thread. Even companies that offer items that do affect gameplay are defended by many posters (myself included if I've played the game and like it the way it is) as long as there's a way to get the items without paying and without having to spend a lot of time doing something that isn't actually fun to do, making the game a chore. That some companies some people like (and are acting all bitter over it) did perhaps get some hate when they did something remotely similar under different conditions doesn't reinforce that argument. That some only care to discuss such things when they can throw jabs at Valve or at those who don't find what they do wrong doesn't mean it's not all discussed elsewhere too.

You lose more money when you try to resell a real engagement ring as well.

Maybe if you are reselling it to a pawn shop in the middle of the night or did some kind of custom engraving, otherwise the value of the ring doesn't really change. If you paid too much initially you will lose money if you got a great deal you could make money.

Don't like it, don't buy it. Pretty simple.

Doesn't effect the game in anyway at all.

I expect one from Clydefrog.

hmm.

Oh god

That's a really good idea on Valve's part, $100 for special pixels and a broadcast announcement is pure profit

What about it? Because you have the option of unlocking things as well as paying for them, a common design decision in f2p games, it's less shameless?

I was saying that there was outrage at Epic and Capcom for locking skins and colors to DLC. Not only that but friggin expensive DLC.

There is no outcry against Valve, not because they are holy, but because F2P games, just like LoL, HoN, and Tribes all have pay to unlock faster mechanics.

As long as you are not forced to buy stuff to get what you want.
And this is something extremly special with very limited use. Just like MMORPGs never got shit for having expensive rings.

Actually they temporarily did with the Christmas 2011 weapons. You could only get them by unboxing crates with nice keys.

Granted it was only for a week, but still annoying.

They withheld maps? I consider maps and gametypes TF2 content, not hats and weapons that could technically be traded for, crafted or bought.

I spent a grand on a diamond ring for my girl today, seriously it's as useless as this. A little bit of gold with a glass rock.

What's the point in it?

There was outcry against Valve by people who don't think Valve is holy the same way there was outcry against Capcom/Epic/Activision by the same type of people. The only difference is that the people who support Valve or don't give a shit outnumber those who are upset.

Say that to the $10k ring I bought my fiance. Useless is subjective! ;)

There are SOME people out there who will buy and enjoy this, haha.

For someone who doesn't give a shit, you sure do like to respond to a bunch of people in this thread who are supposed "haters".

Give me a break.

Dat ass.

Honest question but how many people against this actually play tf2 on PC? Because aside from a global message that everyone sees in text chat for like a second or two, this has no negative effect on actual gameplay or balance.

It's not the same situation. You think if Epic or Activision released a bunch of free map packs and still sold $45 weapons skins, you think people would have bitched? No one complained when Trip Wire released DLC skins for Killing Floor and released a bunch of new maps and weapons for free for KF either.

Right now 30,353 people are playing, with the highest being 44,551 today.

Yeah if Bioware would have done something similar in DAO or ME people would be having a meltdown at how Bioware is pandering to crazy fans. Even worse as the games are published by EA which automatically means that it's evil and not good.

100$ for a worthless item. Wow.

I don't recall saying I don't give a shit, but you're right I'm in that camp. If you had a modicum of logic though, you'd realize that there's a difference between caring about a business practice that doesn't affect people's lives if ignored and replying to non-observant posts. But please, don't let me stop you from getting upset about people "getting upset".

The complaining isn't based on what those companies are presently doing. It's complaints based on hypothetical situations where BAD CAPITALIST COMPANY does something similar to Valve and gets called out for being CAPITALIST PIGS based on their previous track records. It all comes down to how those companies are perceived and what they've done in the past.

price is outrageous. they should've at least done like % proceeds go to the breast cancer foundation or something. i'm not really against the idea of it, but i am against the ridiculous price. however, if people have money to waste then go for it.

Well, epic did release a free map pack for gears 3. The thread I made of it was full of bitching from people who bought a season pass feeling 'robbed', lol.

$100 towards broadcasting a message (crude or genuine) to the entire TF2 playerbase.

VALVE IS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE ENTIRE PLAYERBASE TO MAKE EASY MOOLAH

BY JOVE, THIS
IS AN OUTRAGE

When valve start charging for maps and weapons (that aren't craftable/dropable) then I'll be mad. Right now this is pretty funny.
