Valve introduces $100 virtual engagement ring in Team Fortress 2.

Imagine if Activision tried to pull this off...

The outcry.

Pretty lame by Valve.

Doesn't Activision charge people for DLC? Oh that's right they charge $15 a map pack. Now if Activision decided to sell items that are all cosmetic and use that money to make new DLC and release it for free, there wouldn't be any outcry. Same goes for all the other companies people mentioned.

I have literally no problem with this kind of thing happening, even though I would never purchase something like a digital engagement ring.

I really question people's sanity if they are upset about this.

DO YOUR CHARACTER MODELS ACTUALLY KISS

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

100 dollars is a small price to pay for a server full of heavies making out

BUT YOU DONT UNDERSTAND! HOW DARE THEY CHARGE MONEY FOR AN ITEM THAT DOES PRETTY MUCH NOTHING! GRRRRRRRRREYREGYRGASYUGSABHSGKL! IF THIS WAS ANYONE ELSE YOU'D BE ALL RJKSGAUGYUIRGHASBKBHJBDS11!

The above may be a dramatisation of an angry person mad at this.

Meh it's an expensive useless novelty item for the people who want expensive useless novelty items. I see no issue here. Blizzard released a new 25$ mount today for WoW that is just a useless and there are 40,000 people waiting to buy it right now.

Sanity? Really? If people don't like it, you question their sanity? If people don't like cheese on their burgers, do you question their sanity too?

I think it's an unfortunate sign of where the Mann Co. Store has taken things. I felt store items were already overpriced, even if they were generally just cosmetic (and that's not always the case), and they've long since abandoned having items fit the original style of the game. Now they're introducing $100 status symbols, and the profits don't go to anyone but Valve, as far as we know. It's not charity like the Magnanimous Monarch, it's not even split up as a community payment. It's pure profit for them recycling the Golden Wrench announcement system they already developed, basically making the next "status symbol" item at a high premium. And annoying everybody else every time somebody buys one and the other person accepts.

Sure, you could say "if people are dumb enough to pay it, then why not let them and take their money?" Of course as a pure profit move it's smart for Valve, because their player base has shown they'll spend ridiculous amounts of money on the game. That doesn't make it any less tacky, in my personal opinion.

A fun video game where you shoot other people and complete objectives.

Fun is subjective. Personally I found the game fun after the first few updates before they went wild on adding unbalanced community submissions. As for completing objectives, most games have that so TF2 isn't special in that regard.

Artistdude88, will you marry me?

OMG YES

You even had the 88th post of the thread!

No. ;D

Dude, you're quoting him, why even try to put words in his... fingers...? He typed being *upset* with it, not just not liking it. Does the fact *others* buy burgers with cheese upset you when you don't have to do the same and can have your burger cheese-less?

I don't see what's wrong with this. If people want to buy it, they'll buy it. It's not like Valve is forcing it on anybody. /shrug

Valve is forcing everyone to see spam from these items. It's Valve money grabbing from their playerbase and shows they aren't that much different than other devs out there.

It would upset me if McDonalds announced every customer that opted for cheese on their burger.

Let's talk about something called comparative scale, hmmm?

I never said TF2 was special in the regard.

Just that it's still a fun video game that plays like a video game more or less like it always has, and it's really funny to see people who act like cosmetic items have somehow changed it entirely.

To continue this weird analogy, does Burger King run up to your face and shove a receipt in front of it, "[KC]BILL AND -=SHITHEAD=- JUST BOUGHT A CHEESEBURGER"? Nope? Ok then.

My point was that "I question their sanity" was stupid hyperbole on his part. At least I hope it was hyperbole.

Are notifications disabled by default?

Yeah let's talk about that. How about you start since you brought it up.

They sorta do when the dude/gal at the front calls your order to those that make it...

Don't think I've been to a McDonalds that does that in almost 15 years.

I never said TF2 was special in the regard.

Once again, fun is subjective. Also, some items that have been introduced are far better than their standard counterparts.

Sorry, haven't been to one for about that long, didn't know they patched it out. Still didn't upset me when it happened though.\

Edit: wait, lol, it can even be disabled? There goes that "argument"...

Go find the first time Blizzard offered pets for WOW for sale. IIRC there was outcry and shitting on Activision.

Right, and it was bad then too.

It's not the end of the world or anything, all I said was that it was lame.

And I stand by that.

IT'S TOO LATE. THE DAMAGE HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE.

My eyes have already been exposed to this spam.

Valve should be giving me a portion of the proceeds; people are only buying it to broadcast juvenile messages directly into my eyeballs.

Again I'm not a TF2 expert, I've played a few hours like I said, and mostly I'm playing with random pubbies and I suck and I'm too scared to play Scout or Soldier so I mainly stick to Heavy...

... but in all the games I played, people generally played with items that had little to no value--that is to say that the rare and expensive items are generally cosmetic--and things still seemed quite balanced, far more balanced than the impact of killstreaks or something in that other popular multiplayer FPS.

Is there a particular piece of equipment you're thinking of in terms of breaking balance or encouraging people to drop money on it to get ahead?

The item is only available today and is super expensive, spam is an exaggeration.

I'm trying to think if they've done that before. I know the Christmas present stuff was pretty in-game chat happy, but that was maybe just limited to your current server, right? I'd love to hear someone who knows a lot more than me offer their input on this.

I like how they're trying to curb any backlash by announcing it in a jokingly manner because they know that they're seriously trying to sell garbage.

There are a few items that I'd argue need tweaking (GRU, Enforcer, the new Phlogistinator, etc.) , and of those, Valve is actually balancing some in the open testing beta. They just rolled out one such change in the main game today with this.

But no, none of them are game-breaking. The worst one is actually just a seemingly slight buff to a class's standard stats that they implemented a couple years ago and they've been trying to figure out a way to balance out without simply reversing it (they wanted to make the class more accessible, and ended up going a bit too far and removing its main weakness).

It's ok because it harms noone. Not the buyers, not those who don't buy it, not the game itself, not puppies or kittens. It's all good.

Ya this seems fine. A nice little trinket for any couple that plays the game together. It was something similar that caused Eve Online's huge blowout though?

OK that's good to hear.

Can you give me the name of it so I can look it up to satisfy my own curiosity? I don't have the time or skill to really get involved in TF2 but I am interested in hearing about it.

Pointless bauble for those who like that sort of thing. Maybe we'll see an amusing message now and again.

Erm, I mean, Moneygrubbin' Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalve

BAH!

As if they actually care about releasing it. They have been stalling it for so long I don't even give a damn anymore. Gordon Freeman can go crawl and die in some random vent for all I care.
Amended.
