Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines - buy this game

Fianlly killed that fucker. God the combat in this game is atrocious
Definitely not sounding like one of the best games ever...

Is this game really worth it when I'm so low on money I'm struggling to buy necessities, let alone fun things?

If I was to compare this game to say...Baldur's Gate 2, how would it fare?

Just what specifically is your major malfunction here my main man? I came in late so I'm kind of confused about what you're trying to prove.

Edit: what the hell dude, no game is good enough to buy over necessities.

Man this game is awesome. That
haunted hotel
had to be one of the scariest experiences I've ever had with a video game.

i cant really blame them. Oblivion is probably the poster child for high review score depreciation. The hype and the graphics led reviewers to praise Oblivion so much that the disparity from what the player read in the review and played in the game was just too much to reconcile.

Oblivion and Arcanum are two games that puzzle me.

Both get a lot of love, yet are designed horribly. Especially Oblivion. Its so unbalanced and the map design is horrific. It also takes way too long to get from place to place.

don't buy it. It's not isometric RPG with tactical combat. It's Deus Ex with vampires, strong characters and a lot of options in dialogues. If you don't like this type of game don't buy it.

Arcanum i can see the love for because its a very interesting premise and an ambitious game. Its unfortunate that i found it completely lacking because i was expecting something on the level of Fallout. The idea behind the game is awesome but the game as it is is just awful. There are a lot of good ideas in Arcanum but they arent fully realized or dont make sense.

The quests were dull and tiresome. The character system was confusing at best. Combat was infuriatingly bad. The plot was completely forgettable. The companions were nothing more than pack mules (Dungeon Sieges pack mule was more memorable). Navigating the world was an exercise in frustration (level 40 getting slowed down by the level 1 Ailing Wolf). And the artistic design of the world was just awful (in Fallout its okay because the world is destroyed.. in Arcanum i want to see interesting sights.. Tarant was like a Hooverville with its ramshackle tiled huts).

I disagree with everything in this post.

Except for the character system being confusing.

But I loved that :P.

You think the artistic design is good? Tarant for example.

I think it can be an ugly game at times, especially compared to the era it was released, but I dug the art. I enjoyed Tarant, even if it was basically a giant grid of houses.

Tarant was one of the most underwhelming cities ever. There is this beautiful picture at the main menu to get your imagination running and then you get there and its a fucking shantytown. Even Beregost in BG1 was more impressive than Tarant, let alone Athkatla.

I concede that Arcanum is quite a polarizing RPG. It's main strength, roleplaying, can only be appreciated on repeat playthroughs. An ugly character plays differently than a stupid one, who is again vastly different to a socialite, who is again different to a character who makes a poor first impression, but is very persuasive, and so on. When it comes to roleplaying (and I don't just mean the typical character classes like warrior, mage, etc. seen in most RPGs), Arcanum is probably without peer.

On repeat playthroughs, the alternate approaches to quests transformed the game from a good RPG to one of the best I've played. My one wish is that Troika had implemented ToEE's fantastic combat system in place of Arcanum's.

This is exactly why I loved it. When it came to crafting a character exactly how you wanted, I honestly feel Arcanum is the richest CRPG ever made.

So if someone from the US gifts me the game, do I get the US version or still the censored version (Germany here)

I was going to focus on going through what's on my plate at the moment, but seeing this thread bumped so many times today has me jonesing to go through this again. Maaaaybe.

But I also have to finish re-reading the Song of Ice and Fire books before Dance with Dragons comes out. (._. )

What really annoyed me is how the game introduces you to quests early on that you can't complete until 15 hours later. I mean yeah every RPG is guilty of this to some extent, but this game as just ridiculous. Nearly much every quest I ran into during the first five hours it took two or three more five hours before my part was competent enough to complete it. Also way too many "what the fuck do I do now moments?".Oh and that journal that tracked your quests. I love how I have to hit right thirty times because the developers wanted to go for a "realistic approach" in quest logging.

Forgive me if I sound bitter but I was incredibly pissed when there was a game breaking bug in which I couldn't complete the game when I almost beat it. (Well I guess I could have gotten really good at dice to
get that boat, but fuck it!

The depth of the game is ridiculous. Nearly every quest had some good or evil approach to it. And every stat you added to your character mattered. Sadly due to western role playing nearly being cemented in 3D and voice acting. I think that rivaling its role playing would be impossible.

That's why I have my eye on two indie CRPGs - Age of Decadence and Dead State. Age of Decadence, in particular, already has a fantastic combat demo out, and it reminds me a lot of Planescape: Torment in how a lot of potentially volatile situations can be solved through skill-checks in dialog. The text adventure elements are highly intriguing as well.

Dead State, from following its official forums, seems to be a combination of Fallout, XCOM, Mitsoda, of Bloodlines fame, and Annie Carlson, who was behind some of the writing in Mask of the Betrayer. What's not to look forward to ?

Dead State is the one to watch out of those two, in my opinion but I do have a bias love for Zombies <3 The team behind it do know their stuff and will bring a brilliant survival RPG to the mix.

Still too high.

Why do they only reduce this by small numbers and not 50%+?

The last sale it had so long ago, it was 50 % off.

I fully expect it to have a daily deal at 50 % off instead of the usual 33 %.

BUT SERIOUSLY.

For 3.33 $ of difference for what I consider my favorite game of all time, you're doing yourself a huge disservice if you are considering not getting it over such a petty amount of difference.

If you're not married to the idea of only buying digital games via Steam, I've seen it show up elsewhere for 50% off (at least a couple of times a year on Direct2Drive, for instance).

people saying "still too much" etc.. piss me off. I bought this game retail first day and it was worth every cent. I demand to see peoples steam games list so I can laugh at the crap they've (probably) spent more money on that what this game currently costs.

But, you can get so much from steam for $3... : (

I don't think it's too much right now, I just want to see if it goes for a daily deal.

Okay, bought. I won't be able to install it for a couple days (stupid download caps) but it will be good to play after hearing about it for years.

I use god mode when I replay it. You can ditch the combat entirely and the game is still one of the best ever.

You piss me off. What's wrong with waiting nine days to see if it's going to go cheaper? Don't be a dick to people.

Its not "too much" for most of them, they just wait whether it'll get a daily sale and will buy it for 13 at the last day if it doesnt get a daily sale. Nothing wrong with that.

Its a great game and there are a lot of other great games on steam. It IS getting way more attention than any other Steam game at the moment, with its own Sale thread, now 8 pages long, so be glad about that if you want other people to notice and buy this game.

It's still quite expensive for a seven year old game on Steam. It does make a difference. And as much as I'm sure it's worth every penny, it's going to tarnish people's opinion if they buy it for 33% off right now, and it turns out to be 80% off in two hours. Going into a game having been burnt before hand on the price isn't going to frame their experience positively.

It's on sale for nine more days. If people have waited this long, another week is not going to hurt. It's not like this isn't what people are doing for everything on sale. It's not being treated differently in that regard.

Yep. Same with Torment. Its nice when people buy it but buy or not, i dont give a fuck. The chance to vote with dollars ended years ago. Purchases now mean nothing.

Ever heard of tineye.com?

“All My Friends Are Dead”, a hilariously morbid children’s book by Avery Monsen and Jory John.

I want to give my money to Troika, not Activision (and I already did, I bought the game full price at the time).
The less I can pay for it, the better. It's not like I can't just install the 3-disc version...
