Vice: Sony documents show that single player is thriving, PlayStation users spend more time playing offline games than online ones

I believe the crux of the article was that Sony said their players spend more time on single player games than multiplayer games.

I don't think that's true. I'm skeptical of anyone who says "I saw the slide but I won't show it because it would reveal my source". I'm going to need to see that slide myself.

If PlayStation gamers were rabid for single player games we would see third party single player games sell significantly better on PS4 (when adjusted for install base). But we don't see that.

PlayStation gamers show similar behaviors to XBox gamers and PC gamers.
Approx 60 percent of PS players do not have PS+.

I firmly believe that if you have a multiplayer mindset you would have PS+ and not rely solely on f2p games.

Therefore 60 percent of the PS base is not spending gobs of time on multiplayer games...and those 40% that do have PS+ are not spending 100% of their time on multiplayer.

This isn't hard to grasp.

It is possible that Xbox gamers are spending more time on single-player games than you realize also. Don't believe the multiplayer hype by the media and "some" videogame companies.

Their is tons of multiplayer content on the PS. If the people are playing majority single player, than It is because single player content is what they want to consume.

No one cares. Go play fortnite

The PC crowd is becoming as insufferable as any console fanboy

You know what? Get back to me when a console can play a first person shooter game as simple as Tribes from 1998, and no - that poor excuse for a port on Playstation that was 3rd person and only in fact allowed you to jetpack in a straight line does not count.

Then perhaps you'll have something less insufferable and more poignant to suggest.

I'd just love to see Sony make more of their big AAA games have a coop campaign. I don't care about having a pvp multiplayer mode for these games and I understand coop doesn't work with every sort of campaign, but if they apply their absolute skill with proper singleplayer games to coop games, I'm all in.

I think you're making two big mistakes there.

You underestimate how many people play just one multiplayer game as their game. If that's Fortnite, Rocket league, Apex Legends etc don't require PS+.

Single player gamers have to bounce to new games all the time. Multiplayer gamers don't.

Also, XBox has similar XBL rates among their user base and their most played games list is dominated by multiplayer. Literally only 3 of the top 50 most played XBox games are single player.

If PlayStation gamers were vastly different than XBox gamers we would see PlayStation users buy AAA single player third party games at much different rates than XBox users. We do not.

XBox publishes a "Most Played Games List" and they update it hourly.

It's always heavily dominated by multiplayer games.

Anecdotal: but I had 6 kids at my house this weekend all preferring Fortnite on the Switch even over using the shiny new consoles..
They were literally fighting over who had to play on the PS5...
There is no Fortnite on PS5?

Err, you don't think the set you look at is a self-selected set?

It is a little bit like saying "90% of all people plan to buy a Mercedes this year" based on a survey you did on people down at the Mercedes dealer.

Sony only does single player games. Highly doubtful theres more time played on tlou2 or ghost over say cod or fortnite.

Once you get your 20 - 30 hour playthrough done, its a wrap. Especially after you got the platinum.

Whereas cod, destiny, etc people keep grinding for loot.
Exactly and that's how companies make money nowdays: "consumer engagement" (aka locking people to their ecosystem).

No one cares about tribes. Stop acting as if you are special because you own a PC. You are not.

Yes they do

Obviously there are entire communities for tribes that exist even today so I'd wager you a billion percent wrong just on that one aspect, secondly - consoles still can't adequately play it - you mean superiority complexed console gamer's don't care if there are in fact simple, 22 year old FPS's they can't play on console. Point still stand's, Consoles are inadequate for playing an entire breadth of MP games. Whether you like it or not, and no - no one care's that you obviously don't.

You are in a thread about playstation games. Not a PC wank thread. Go play tribes or something on your "superior" PC. That's a better use of your time than your trolling here.

Yes they do

Nope.

When adjusted for install base we see very similar shopping habits between PlayStation and XBox gamers.

Heck, if you look at trophies and achievements you'll see similar playing habits as well.

This shouldn't be shocking to people as well informed as us.

I doubt that's noteworthy.

Sony and Microsoft isn't going to make up data for players who don't feed them info by being online.

I also suspect offline gamers on both sides behave similarly.

Is the appeal of Animal Crossing similar to Minecraft? That people invest in building a world for many years?

With young kids its very difficult to play online, single player that can be paused or played in short sessions is best.

The single player Sony exclusive games are the reason I got a PS4 and now a PS5.

You are in a thread about playstation games
You are still trying to bury your head in the sand, while also insisting I quit replying?

No One Cares

You are categorically wrong and no one agrees with you.

This thread is just as much about Xbox as Microsoft is cited in the very first sentence of the article.

And perhaps if either ecosystem was as capable of delivering non hampered multiplayer experiences as PC
this wouldn't be a noteworthy topic.

As it stands, I'm going to keep replying get over yourself. No One Cares if you're upset that Sony and Microsoft have long established track records
of delivering games with smaller levels, smaller player caps that are genuinely hampered due to limitations of the controller and consoles.

I'm not going to quit replying but I'm very sure you'll quit avoiding the actual topic here by continuing to bury your head in the sand.

Whilst not stellar, I found it pretty decent, so - Why?

Not saying Outer Worlds is shit, it's only shit to my liking. Feels like a PS3 remastered (not even a remake). Engine, gameplay, and all aspects feel rough. But Fallout 4 is shittier with even worse engine.

But sometimes I like games that others find shit, like Rage 2? So it's not facts, more like preference.

Grrrr.
I only like shooters and that is why I only play on shooter-box.
There are people that like other things, like not-shooter games.
It makes me so angry I am literally shaking.
Why don't these people understand they are WRONG.

They are WRONG they are WRONG they are WRONG.
All their games, which I don't like are bad and no one plays them.
Grrr.

The thread.

The future is "offline" games designed to be able to play on cooperative modes. There are too much online games, and they are designed for people using their fully gamer time on them. Offline games usually you finish the game and start other.

SP games fit most working people and parents. You come from work after an exhausting day and you aren't into MP stress and tension with kids saying that they slept with your mom. It's a great time where you relax and really enjoy gaming to its fullest.

To me, SP games provide me with a constant stream of joy and make me appreciate gaming much more.

The documents are there for a reason, of course a MP game will dominate the list since you can play it for infinite hours.

The problem here is AND THIS IS A FACT: VERY FEW MP GAMES CAN SUCCEED and most actually fail hard.

For every Fortnite/Call of Duty you´ve 10000 H1Z1, Battlefield V, Bleeding Edge, Law Breakers, Hyper Scape, Fallout 76, Avengers etc.

I could go on, online gaming is a GAMBLE that most times doesn´t pay off but a Single Player? Do a great SP Game and it might not set the world on fire but i can assure you it´ll sell decent and attract a very niche but passionate audience & sometimes even grow into something bigger (Demon´s Souls, Shadow of the Colossus etc.)

Other Plus you can buy that game in 5 years for a BUCK and still enjoy it, try playing a dead online game. oh wait.

You can be skeptical, but there's really no reason for them to lie about it. It doesn't affect sales in any way. No one is going to pass on a PS5 because they discover gamers play online more than offline, or vice-versa. Realistically, it makes sense. Most multiplayer games also have single-player elements. Many people do not have internet speeds that make playing online practical. Also, multiplayer games live and die with their online communities. Single player games can be returned to decades later, without any issue.

I'm not sure why people are even questioning it. It just seems like an interesting piece of information that has no bearing on anything. Actual numbers are probably confidential, like other user metrics.

Hes saying the kids were all wanting to play Fortnight on the Switch, no one wanted to get stuck on the PS5 playing a different game.
That's the point. They could play Fortnite on PS5 same way as on Switch (but for some reason devilNprada decided to not install it). There is even cross play between platforms.

basically what's happening here is more "casuals" or non-gamers are getting into gaming and those types of people are after new narrative experiences and value that more than "gameplay mechanics".

Doesn't surprise me personally. I also find myself playing Singleplayer over Multiplayer.
It is the only reason why I buy consoles. The 3 Multiplayer games I play per season/period/whatever, will always be on PC.

From my experience most of them are after FIFA/NFL and shooting bad guys in next CoD.

Agreed

playing online has turned out very poorly and I think it all had to do devs and publishers attempting to turn their online components into cash cows rather than focusing on making them fun and awesome. Fucking shame tbh, online was supposed to be the future, now I couldn’t care less about a game having an online mode. And in fact, I avoid them bc I know they likely spent too much time worrying about how they can make more money rather than make a good video game.

I can't wait to see when Sony sends out an email to their userbase which reports how many games you played, and what games you clock in the most. I know this year I spent more time playing many SP games than MP games.
