Vice: Sony documents show that single player is thriving, PlayStation users spend more time playing offline games than online ones

When I have only so much time to play games, I'm generally looking for a strong single player experience. I don't particularly abhor multiplayer games but I can only get so good against people who play around the clock.

Your entire post hinges on the idea that PlayStation gamers behave radically different than XBox gamers.

Every piece of data that we've ever seen suggests they don't.

The story has been debunked.

Give the data. Your whole fucking post on theses threads can't simply be "debunked" or " they don't" or "bogus" etc

AC Valhalla
"42% of the game's sales came on PS4, and 18% came on PS5, despite the latter machine not coming out in the UK until next week. The rest of the sales (40%) came with the Xbox version"
Basically 60% of its sales came from Playstation fans. Its not shocking as when they buy stuff like Horizon, Days Gone, Spiderman, Uncharted, Ghost Of Tsushima etc, clearly they enjoy single player titles, thus exist MORE on PS to buy those titles to this degree. NOTHING on XB has outsold what is listed, thus doesn't have the same player base that enjoys those concepts.

Thats it. That is a FACT, you are going to have to get over that my friend.

"Yakuza: Like A Dragon makes No.20, with 65% of unit sales coming on PS4 and 35% on 'Xbox'"

The factual numbers show by an almost absurd amount PS single player titles simply move more units, the community buys MORE single player games FACTUALLY and even when a game that is single player is on both systems, even in a situation where 360 at the time had MORE UNITS, many single player games still sold BETTER on PS3, so we can relax with the whole "bud da got mo units" argument.

So at the end of the day, PS4 likely sold more units for what PS4 offers that XB doesn't to the same degree, single player games. Which answers why many of those IP did better on PS, it has a community that primarily enjoys that concept, no different then something like Just Dance might sell better on Nintendo or why some MP titles do better on XB.

The actual factual data and numbers provided supports this.

Not simply screaming "debunked" or "bogus" until you are blue in the face. So this is where I need to add you on that ignore list.

This is irrelevant data.

The argument isn't what sells more. It's what's played more often.

The fact that XBox Most Played Games list and Steamcharts skew so heavily towards multiplayer strongly suggests PlayStation does as well.

Like I said, only 3 single player games are currently in the top 50 of XBox Most Played Games list, with the most popular ranking in at #20.

To think PlayStation gamers have drastically different habits is laughable.

each genre has their own pro and cons
i believe the topic here is not about single player is better than multiplayer as whole, and multiplayer is suck or vice versa, more like the data shows that single player game still has lot of potential despite the rise popularity of tons multiplayer game and other model nowdays

just wondering, some those who against single player game here, are they actually just purely didnt like single player genre or just merely denied it just because it something closely-related to sony?

Jesus Christ. Sony fanboys claiming single player games as Sony exclusive now? I never play multiplayer - ever - I exclusively play single player games. Have all three consoles and PC - order of preference: Xbox, Switch, PC, PlayStation.

From what I read it is a combination of "that they exist" and "that people enjoy them" and these two things are taken as a personal insult.

They are not a Sony exclusive but Sony stood their ground and made great SP games with little to no microtransactions when much of the industry was going the other way.

Such bullshit in this thread - the post about Sony ‘single handedly saving single players’ tipped me over the edge.

There are enough single player games on all systems to keep me playing that aren’t made by Sony. In fact, for my taste, Sony make some of the most unimaginative and by the numbers single player games around. I finish most games that I start, but I have a long list of Sony exclusives half played.

I literally just bought Ghost of Tsushima to play on PS5 before it goes off sale, but I already know it’s been overhyped, like they all are. But the idea of Assassin’s Creed Samurai appeals to me, so hopefully I can plough through - but I don’t pretend Assassin’s Creed doesn’t exist so I can claim Sony as our saviours.

It’s ridiculous tbh.

The drastic difference which you seem to sidestep is "What has Sony as a publisher delivered to their audience?" Once you take that into consideration the point you're trying to make becomes invalid.

Sony's single player games last gen (and niche japanese dev support) is why the PS5 was the only next gen consoles I was considering. But I do think single player is thriving in general (3rd parties and other consoles). I just wish the whales would stop supporting GTA Online.

You can't even use punctuation correctly, why the hell would I listen to you?

And you can't stand the truth, that truth being - All consoles games come with gimped performance modes now - at best, whereas PC can run games in MP at max settings, with level's that have not been shrunk down to fit a specific demographic/resolve performance issues - even on inferior hardware.

But enjoy your lesser MP gaming ecosystem, I wouldn't keep you from it.

Online communities are somewhat of a niche group if you ask me. You only have fun as long as you’re beating the other people. Lol I remember the days of Rainbox Six 3, Street Fighter Anniversary Edition and Halo 2 on Xbox. I knew more people playing Halo 2 because it was super popular. Outside of that it was always a hit and miss.

I started with single player. Even on PS1 games like Crash, Time Crisis, and later on Final Fantasy needed zero online components. It’s kinda hard to find someone exactly like you, someone who wants to compete, and single player games are their own package.

The stigma of online players is awful. The competitive side feels way too niche at times. A lot of people don’t want to lose to someone who games all day long. It feels like a waste of money. I don’t play games to feel like I’m better or worse than someone else. All those things add up over time. I’m not shocked at all. It can seem sad, but not a lot of people want to waste their game time losing a match.

I don’t even think it’s a shocking discovery. Super Metroid, Super Mario, and Zelda are all offline games. PlayStation has a long history of impressive fighting games and RPGs. RPGs have their own genre for going online. Fighting games are already a niche genre and the arcades are long gone. Obviously having people physically around coin op games didn’t save the arcade industry. People stay home and if they see a good game then they’ll buy it.

God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, and The Last of Us 2 give off that good feeling. You aren’t forced to fight somebody you don’t know for a major loss. I like to play online sometimes, but it’s not something I always want to do. 80-90% of my game time since the SNES has been offline.

To think Sonys single player AAA exclusives react any differently to the market than games like The Witcher III, Red Dead Redemption 2, Resident Evil etc...would be crazy.

Now consider the fact that Sony only releases 1-3 of that caliber of exclusive each year.

There's no rational way to believe the Vice story. It's junk.

Don't you love it when Xbox guys go contraian on obvious Playstation stats, when the actual data is public.

Using the most popular 3rd party games as reason to deny the data is as disingenuous as they come. Playstation gamers buy both, the ultra popular games like - RDR2, GTA5, Minecraft, COD, AC, etc. They also buy more single player games than Xbox gamers, that is an inarguable fact.

If it was just one single player franchise, Xguys arguments still would be questionable. But, we know though hard data, that Sony has at least 5-7 franchises that's near 10 million or over it for individual sales last gen.

Are there anymore logical Xbox fans on this site? Seems like most have turned into rabid, bullshit, conspiracy peddlers.

You can't possibly see the best and most popular single player third party games drop like a rock on XBox + Steam and believe the trend is any different on PlayStation.

Most companies have bungled the multiplayer game experience. I still enjoy a good MP game but nowadays playing one is like buying a house, you need to invest all this time and energy into it, with GAAS shit, battle pass, unlock grinding, it is so dumb and annoying. And I know, technically, you don't "have to", but these companies have teams of people to design these systems to give you FOMO if you're not, to keep you locked in. So more often than not I just don't bother.
This is my impression as well. Given the choice, most would probably choose multiplayer but there's so much bullshit attached to playing a multiplayer game (and additional costs) that most are probably annoyed.

NeoGAF when reading something from Vice about politics, culture, or gender: "Lul Vice trash"

NeoGAF when reading something from Vice claiming single player is more popular than multiplayer: "OMG, Vice is great!"
The world is not black and white. Just because most articles by Vice are garbage doesn't mean that everything by them is. Just as sometimes Scheier says something interesting by accident, even though that dude is only interested in himself. Also, GAF's politics forum is hot fucking garbage anyway.

What are you even arguing? The ultra popular 3rd party games stay popular for a reason, they are ultra popular with the masses. No exclusives compete with those select few. And totally shocked, that single player exclusives are not as popular as games with a multi component/sarcasm.

Aren't both directly correlated? If you're refuting someone else's credible data and reports, at least back your own claim with data.

What are you basing your argument on other than "gut feelings"?
His argument to my understanding is, the COD'S, GTA5, Fortnite, etc, are at the top of the most played monthly list for Xbox and Playstation, so therefore the single player games are not as important. Anything to downplay the success of Sony's single player ips is his actual argument, if you pull the drapes back and take a peek.

No, they're not.

Buying games and playing games are two completely different things. Many single player games are one and done, while many multiplayer games are played for months and years in many cases.

I'm basing my argument on the trends SteamCharts and XBox Most Played Games list have shown us for years.

It's unfathomable to think PlayStation games don't follow those exact same trends.

I agree but this article is actually garbage. It makes zero sense if you're even halfway interested in the truth.

Acting like the masses play Sony's 1-3 big single player games at some insane scale is absurd.

Cyberpunk 2077 comes out in a few days.

It'll get a 90 metacritic and be marketed to high heavens and sell boatloads. It'll be every bit as good (probably better) than the majority of Sony's single player exclusives.

Let's watch how it performs on XBox Most Played Games list and Steamcharts on day 1 of release compared to day 30 after release.

It'll plummet, as all single player games do.

I am sorta surprised, yes Sony supports single player experiences like no other company. But always thought PS4 had a bigger audience for MP audience thanks to F2P not needing PS Plus.

Even though I play mostly on Xbox I'm clearly that single player demographic that thrives on PlayStation. So happy (or relieved even) that so many single player games were successful in PS4 last gen.

Again, can you share relevant PlayStation data to support your claims?

The very reason so many people buy PlayStation (instead of an Xbox or PC) is because of Sony's exclusive games. Take PS Exclusives away, and a large % will jump on PC (for better performance) or Xbox (for GamePass). Same with Nintendo. So why would you assume PS/Nintendo players have the same priorities as Xbox/PC players?

Shawn Layden just liked my Tweet. Hmm...I wonder why.

Single player cost is raising and making games bigger and longer isn’t sustainable. Cyberpunk 2077 is a smaller map/world. Valhalla is a more focused experience. He was talking about every game to shoot for 50-60 hour gameplay because that will be much more expensive to make and comparing it to previous generations. It is funny for those suits when they only talk about increase dev cost from gen over gen and not increased profit and game companies getting record sales.

Also the article is by Patrick Klepek not Kotaku.

The company's own data showed that people were spending more time playing the company's own single player games

🤷‍♀️

Imo this applies maybe to the 5-6m core audience, outside GTA.
While the much larger subset out there, dont want to spend time going through long cinematics single player games.
The money is with the mp games.

I certainly would prefer pick and go mp games. I couldnt even finish TW3. You reach a point of sp games, where it becomes predictable and repeatable.
Mp games are more fresh, competitive and dynamic.

A couple of CEO's said some shit bout single player couple of times n everyone forcing this "Sony is saving single player PR talk"
Guys... No one stoped making single player.
Most games developed n released are single player focused. Death of single player never was a thing. Stop consuming cheap manipulative PR n fantasize corporations like Sony or Microsoft are here to be your friend. Cos any of them ll stop being consumer friendly THE MOMENT they can.

Then you'd be very disappointed that MS acquired Bethesda, and with the announcements of Hellblade 2, Avowed, Fable, The Medium, Scorn, Stalker, etc. Right? 😛

I will give them a play through via GPU on my PC, hopefully 3080Ti is available then.
But im not sure if they will hold my interests till the end.
But no way im going to spend $60-70 on a sp player game, especially if the lenght is <20hrs and too cinematics and no mp free for all. :messenger_moon: :messenger_ok:

Its why I bought PS4 Pro over Xbox One X.

6Terfloppy Super duper mega monster killah can't replace

Ghost of Tsushima,
Death Stranding,
God Of War,
Uncharted 4,
Horizon Zero Dawn,
Dreams,
Gran Turismo Sport,
The Last of Us 2,
Days Gone.

Before my purchase I legit compared this above list to what Xbox had at the time and what was coming and I ended up with:

Gears of War 5,
Halo 5,
Forza Horizon 4,
Forza 5.

So yes, exclusive story driven games apart from GT Sport is what drove me to go PS. Crazy thing is I have not yet finished them all. I'm waiting on PS5 to finish these campaigns in glorious 4K and hopefully 60fps across the board.

EDIT: My post is not intended to start a list war. It's just a means to explain my reasoning for choosing PS.

Nice totally unbiased list, but where is Quantum Error, Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, two Ori games? And that list still don't include various strategy games from multiple genres (Gears Tactics, Halo Wars 2, Zoo Tycon) which Sony has literally zero

Someone should tweet this to Microsoft.
Don't worry about MS they know that.
I know you guys are in denial but they currently have 6 or even more teams making single player wRPG games. Outside of MS there are currently only two teams making high budget wRPGs worth talking about. Larian and CDPRed (BioWare for now is dead for me). They also have two best studios specializing in high budget FPS games (idSoftware and MachineGames) and Arkane best immersive sim studio on market.

Hard to believe it, I mean, people put hundreds, I repeat - HUNDREDS of hours into just a single MP title, some even thousands, so how many SP titles others would've to play to get to those numbers, let alone surprass them? As per the article even:
"The presentation opens by saying "everyone knows single player is dying," with a list of the top-selling PlayStation 4 video games that seems to crib this sales list, showing games like Grand Theft Auto V and Black Ops 3 dominating sales because of their multiplayer modes. "

So the most selling titles are MP-oriented games, and people have infinite number of hours in those, and yet Sony claims the games people spend most time on are the SP title, something just doesn't add up here... But then again given, they don't offer themselves any MP experience, they had to spin the narrative to promote their solutions, marketing 101. There are of course SP-only games games like the mentioned AC or TWC3 with tens of hours of gameplay, but most of them don't offer beyond ordinary 8-15h.

But I don't know what to think about it, they talk about people who have mere minutes, literally, half an hour tops to play the games (which again goes completely against the argument those are the most played games), and I don't think that scrolling through tabs/menus instead of actually playing the games is a good solution for those people... And that's why I think the cards won;t be used much, people will just play the games, quit when they have to, and resume from the latest checkpoint. If anything, I'd say that XB Quick Resume is a better deal in those kind of scenarios, where you jump straight into a game within seconds, quit at whatever the moment, might be just at half of a quest, might me just a single combat, dugint a boss fight, whatever, and next time you're back exactly where you left, you don't have to track whether you'll make it withing the given timeframe or not.

But either way, I really don't believe people jump into the games for just a few minutes, especially when already waiting in the lobby for their buddies, like c'mon, let's be real, maybe occasionally it happens, sure, but not on a daily basis.

Wow, reading some comments, i didn't know Xbox gamers bought so much less singleplayer games, the very first game i bought for my XSX was DMC5 Special Edition and have been mostly playing singleplayer games, aside from a bit of Forza Horizon 4(also in SP) and Killer Instinct.

Anyways, people say they hope Microsoft is paying attention...sadly, there was a point where they did try to get single player games in as exclusives, the games either weren't that great or no one cared, hey, who here remembers Blinx, or Kameo, or who remembers Ninja Gaiden going to PS3 with improved versions?

Also, the Xbox One reveal at E3 was an unmitigated disaster and made many Xbox fans migrate to the PS4 out of spite alone and required a change in leadership, someone who actually plays games but was forced to handle a dumpster fire after the PS4 already took off and maybe Spencer isn't charismatic enough to convince developers to give Xbox a chance, aside from some small indie games, which weren't advertised at all, Super Lucky's Tale is...a short easy 3D platformer, but it at least has some charm, it stood on Xbox for two years before coming to Switch and for more people to buy it there because it got more ads even if it's not really the best 3D platformer ever.

I guess things got bad enough that Microsoft was forced to spend a lot of money to buy studios but not fast enough to get exclusives at launch, and even if the Bethesda deal goes through, they will still have to make some PS5 games, let's not forget Sony isn't ashamed of paying for timed exclusives, MS may get to own the studio making Deathloop, but because of a contract with Sony, Deathloop will stick on PS5 for a year much like they did with FF7 Remake.

Hopefully the studios Microsoft paid for will make more single player exclusives, Game Pass has also seemingly made Xbox users give a chance to single player indie games, and i appreciate the fact that Ori and The Will Of The Wisps won Xbox GOTY by popular vote, and that is a single player 2D indie game, maybe indicating that there is still a market for single player games on Xbox that Microsoft never managed to advertise to...or it took years for it's user to try some SP games and Game Pass helped with that.
