Quest Mode is truly superb. However, I will say that Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution has the best version of it. I find that it possesses more depth and opportunities for the player than what's presented in VF5. I truly hope that, if VF6 ever becomes a reality, we get a mode that matches if not surpasses VF4:E's Quest Mode.
The only other fighting game I've played with a similar feature is Soul Calibur 1 on the Dreamcast. The mission mode in that was pretty great. Unlocking everything was a blast!
Referenced in oneida's excellent article too, but yeah, AM2's tried to keep VF ahead of the curve and wasn't really afraid to experiment a little here and there. Arcadewise VF3 knocked everyone around a bit with the Model 3 graphics and uneven terrain fights.
I think it started losing lustre when everyone else caught up to it in graphics, features, and playability.
VF4EVO tutorial and quest mode are the best place to start learning Virtua Fighter
once you're comfortable with that, peek this: https://youtu.be/boM7T3BWewY
and then hit up VFDC for VF5FS matches.
Yup. VF5 is still the best fighting game for me. The first time I saw it at the arcade back in 2006, my jaw dropped. it's a beautiful game, even by today's standard.
