Virtua Fighter: Will SEGA will skip this generation?

Since Saturn, Virtua Figther has been present in all generation, sometimes as a pinnacle for some consoles.

But since we are in the end of 8th video game generation, it is a shame that we not have a new Virtua Fighter, not even a Collection.

IMO, this generation was a kind of rebirth of Fighting games with amazing sequels like MK and even new entries like DBZF.

The only "crumb" that we had was a port of VF5FS Arcade on Yakuza and nothing more

So, Will VF skip this generation?

VF1 to VF5:

The lack of a new Virtua Fighter this gen with the success and resurgence of so many FGC franchises hurts me deeply. Just imagining what could be done with modern hardware..

Actually thinking about it, perhaps it is better that they wait (as long as they are just waiting to unleash such a thing) because there really are almost too many games out there right now. Fact is Tekken 7 owned this gen. I love Street Fighter, I love Blazblue and X tag, I love undernight and I LOVE Samurai Showdown and Soul Calibur but Tekken 7 was so masterfully done. At TGS this year they should announce that they are working on a new Virtua FIghter for next gen systems.

Almost every new fg this gen has been very budgeted.Sega probably doesn't want to go the thrifty route and release something that's not up to series standard. All the arcade releases were cutting edge, you can't do that without cash.

I'm really think Sega is done with Virtua Fighter. I would love to see VF6, but when even Streets of Rage resurfaces before you do, you know something's wrong. We need more 3d fighters into. I really like Tekken, DOA and SC, but we need more than that and tekken and sc are from the same company anyway. I like 2d fighters as well, but that shouldn't populate 98% of fighting games. Maybe Sega will surprise us next year, but I'm not holding my breath.

TAKE THAT BACK!!

TAKE THAT BACK!!

Wish I could, but I know Sega and this industry too well. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I truly feel VF is dead. Sad part is, I feel like Tekken is the ONLY thing holding 3d fighters together now. SC6 is seemingly on life support and most people for some reason don't really give DOA6 a chance, so there's really not much left in the 3d fighter market. I'm sure we will get more 2d fighters to look forward to from the same 3 companies in the future though.

Sega messed up, because fighting games made a comeback this gen, Tekken 7 did very well. They could've released some older VF games at the very least. The only thing we got for VF5 FS arcade mode in Yakuza 6.

SEGA are usually budgeting even Sonic games these days so I wouldn't count on their history this time.

They should do both VF and FV

The chance to revive the series probably came and went from 2009 to about 2016, when there was a bit of a fighting game resurgence and mainstream interest in every FG scene out there. Sega has a poor track record of supporting certain games for Western fans, and that definitely included VF5.
A PS3 port of VF5 vanilla without online, then an under-advertised FS port in Y6. I think I remember reading there were only two FS arcade cabinets in the United States, because of Sega's tight control of cabinet sales and forcing arcade digital distribution.
I'm sure there's demand in Asia for a sequel despite VF5 debuting 13 years ago, but at this point a lot of Western game journalists probably don't know what it is.

I had some hopes that Sega might do something with the series, when the 20th anniversary came along, back in 2013.
They launched a special website along with a youtube channel.
They made some posts and uploaded some stuff, but that was pretty much it. Things just died by the end of 2014.

A new VF is long overdue, but Sega's scepticism on whether to invest in a new 3D fighter is sadly understandable.

Tekken has felt watered down and dull as shit since Tag 2, and while DoA 5 was a decent and enjoyable game, DoA 6 is a huge step back from it.

And the automated hold-your-hand Warner Bros. bullshit can get fucked. Those aren't fighting games.

It always have been my favorite 3D fighting game series.
I played again virtua fighter 5 final showdown in judgement (great game by the way)
It hurts so bad.

Our only hope is the case where these guys decide to collaborate one more time, to add Virtua Fighter characters to the DOA6 roster.
Hayashi Yousuke (the head of Team Ninja), Shinbori Youhei (director of DOA6), Daichi Katagiri (VF5 director)
Otherwise, I don't see any hope.

I think we might see one next gen, T7 is doing well, sc6 meet sales goals, it's dying now sure, and doa6 is....doa unfortunately. I think VF6 should come out at the start of next gen an just upgrade throughout the gen.

Just give them all a permanent home in DOA
keep adding Mai also

The Virtua Fighter 2 roster + stage remakes would be good enough as DLC packs.

Better than nothing I guess...

What I wouldn't want is a new Virtua Fighter, simply for the sake of a new Virtua Fighter. Putting aside the likelihood of SEGA making another VF, anytime soon, I'd rather the next entry in the series be a graphical showcase; which is essentially another way of saying, I'm fine with the series skipping what remains of this hardware generation.

That said, it would be nice, if the older VF games were a little more accessible, outside their inclusion in games made by the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.

Well it doesnt help that arcades dont exist anymore. Plus do Sega even have devs anymore?, they just seem to outsource eveything these days.

Last devs who seriously and creatively dabbled in VF was Team Ninja. Sega gave them materials, source code, the works. They did a pretty good job adapting the characters to a different engine. It wasn't that straightforward since they rebuild the models, adjusted, physics, hitboxes, frame data, everything.

I believe that's the only chance VF6 has: co-development of Sega and Tecmo where Team Ninja will do 90% of the work and 10% will be AM2 advisor who Sega miraculously remembered.

Did you know? Virtua Fighter 3 remains the only entry in the series exclusive to the Dreamcast console & Arcades to this day! & even then the home-port isn't even close to arcade perfection...

A new entry in the series before the generation closes would be fantastic. Especially so, considering the fighting game renaissance this gen.

As a minor consolation prize, Virtua Fighter 5 was added to the back compat list on the Xbox One and looks and runs brilliantly:

Series is pretty dead and niche at this point. Seems the fighting game market is a bit saturated as well with SF5 and Tekken 7 still big in the competitive scene and Soul Calibur 6, Smash Ultimate, MK11, Samurai showdown etc. all out in the last year.

If they wanted to bring it back I'd shoot for it being the first big 3D fighter out next gen to get more of a spotlight.

Yes... Unless you count the VF that were part of the Yakuza games.

It's a shame. I think is one of the best franchises for serious fighters.

Thank you SEGA for Tekken 7, the best fighter this gen and by far (yes, i know, i'm pathetic).

I really want ports + remasters in 4k of the old ones from both arcade and home consoles, plus Fighting Vipers 1&2, plus Last Bronx and a new VF and a remake for fighters megamix just before VF7. Welcome to Fantasy Land!

Virtua Fighter died after 3. I'd rank my excitement for a new VF game right up there with Rian Johnson's new SW trilogy.

They need to skip a gen and go back to what the series was before and stop trying to be Tekken.

I guess the technical answer is no, like you say, there is the Yakuza playable version.

However, I fear like many of its classic franchises that SEGA have truly lost confidence and interest in the IP. It speaks volumes that when Harada asked fans for suggestions for guest characters that the number one was Kazuma Kiryu and not a VF fighter.

Losing VF only hurts the fighting game community who aren't exactly spoilt for choice at the moment. But i would like to see another one.

What can it do that sets it apart from other fighting games?
It plays unlike any other series, it's the Street Fighter III 3rd strike of 3D fighters, very technical and deep and rewarding on a crazy level. Of course none of that shows in footage where you still just watch move animations with no clue of the priorities and possibilities in gameplay.

If Nvidia had any brains, they would have paid Sega to make a balls out ray traced Virtua Fighter 6 to return the series to its former glory as a bleeding edge game.

It's a fucking 1 on 1 fighting game. The game logic is simplistic. You could simply THROW resources at the graphics (which is what the original arcade games did). 4k 120hz ray traced monster that benefits from NVLink'd GPUs. Let's go. Hurry up already.

I'll leave this here:

:messenger_sunglasses:

Tekken player here. I don't think anybody I know will ever call VF deeper than Tekken or vice versa. But will say it was the most technical fighting game ever. I hope it is forgotten entirely than for it to have more of its fighters appear on lesser games like DoA. Nothing short of a revival should do. This is the series that MADE 3D fighters ffs.

These are their meetings between Team Ninja and Sega AM2, back in June 2012.

The only hope I see, is for them to hold another meeting where they will discuss the addition of VF characters in DOA6.
Other than that I don't anything else in the horizon.

DOA6 didn't sell that well. Probably Tecmo-Koei and Team Ninja are contemplating/working (on) what to do to garner more sales from DOA6 (perhaps by releasing an upgraded version, DOA6 Ultimate?).
Sega doesn't have any plans to make another Virtua Fighter game whatsoever. Therefore, I don't expect Team Ninja to knock on Sega's front door just to spearhead the joint development of VF6.

This is what Sega Europe said back in Nov 2018. Nothing VF related in the making.

Thanks for all the info.

It's a huge shame Sega isn't willing to step up and make new VF. I'm a primary Tekken player since mid 90's and rivalry with VF is what pushed Tekken in right direction. Without it Tekken lost it's greatest rival and started romancing with Street Fighter and introduced SF 2D mechanics to Tekken as well as 2D characters. T7 may be super popular but I don't like what way the series is going. If only VF still lived.

I like VF very much by itself and see another chance for it. Retro compilations are very hot lately so maybe there's a chance Sega will do one for VF. They could keep their excuse of not doing new VF by just doing ports of old ones.

Sega seemed to become "normalized" since last few years but still they do shit like porting VF5FS to Yakuza 6 but leaving actual PS3/360 port out of modern platforms. Sega is Sega.

I could see them maybe porting VF5 to modern hardware. The game is still super popular in the FGS around Tokyo (or at least it was when I was there a couple years ago).

Funny thing is, I think Team Ninja did a better job on it's guest characters, VF included then Tekken did from a gameplay perspective. In other words, I felt the Virtua Fighter guest characters felt right at home and played really well in DOA5 and probably DOA6 if they decide to return. If they come back, I feel they would make them play faithful to the originals.
