Visual Downgrade In Next-Gen Tech Demos Going From PC To Consoles?

You guys missed the point. It was not about which game got it first. Did i say it was exclusive to TLOU? The only reason i posted it was because how they nailed the lighting in the game. Does it matter if it looks pre-baked or not, especially if it looks so damn good?

The point of my post was not to start a discussion about consoles having something better in graphics because in graphics, PC will mostly triumph consoles. But it was about how smart uses of such graphical rendering techniques can also make a game look beautiful, even if the hardware is dated.

The subtitles are not by me, they were in the DF Tech Analysis video. I just made the GIFs but obviously i failed to get my point across. Carry on with your elitism PC-GAF.

You can make any game look good when you make 540px × 303 gifs of it.

Even the last of us.

Funny thing about htose Gifs is that you can still see the aliasing shimmering in them.

Wait... Is there anything I'm missing on this thread? The Last of Us looks bad, or mediocre now?

No one said bad. It is artistically quite wonderful. Just not the second coming as some would like everyone to think.

Its great looking console game, but its not 2010 anymore, tech advanced so much further and it just does not look good for 2013 next-gen standards, yet some people claim otherwise which is just incorrect.

Is the best game I played so far this year and one of the best this gen, also is the best looking game on the PS3, but when you compare it with PC games, technically looks bad.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but I have a 7870 in my computer and it can toot it's own horn if you get what i mean. Saying that, TLOU has graphics that kind of blew me away. The lighting and the pain staking detail in the world create one of the best looking games I've played. It may not be technically superior to say Tomb Raider maxed out or Crysis but I damn sure like looking at it.

Some scene yeah but others hell no.

I know. It looks better than most next gen games.

1280x-1

Who said that it looks like next gen game? On PS3, it is a big NO! But if we can somehow get a remaster on PS4 with 1080/60p and AA to remove jaggies, it will definitely be a looker and could be mistaken for next gen easily.

1080p would probably be too revealing with all the cardboard houses around. 720p level definition without jaggies would likely be better to hold up the facade IMO.

Naughty Dog always create their art/assets in very high resolution and then downscale to PS3 resolution. It means that there is a huge chance that we might get a PS4 remastered version of Uncharted Trilogy and TLOU at 1080p. I think that these games can hold very well at 1080p.

All devs do this.

Wanted to test something out...
Noticed how horrible FXAA is for still/moving imagery and what it does to art assets.

For example... Crysis 3 below looks good obviously... but a lot of the art looks muddy, uncrisp and still pretty aliased as a result of the FXAA I took the screen with. I would not be surprised if Killzone is also suffering from this image quality problem right now. I can only hope they get better AA solution by release... it is obvious that a lot of their assets are very high quality at their highest LODS and would benefit immensely from a more competent AA solution.

That KZ SF shot has far more problems than just a post AA blur.

Take a look at that horrible shadow stippling on the foliage!
It also seems to lack much in the way of AF, the trees have pretty low res textures noticeable from even that screen shot's distance and based off shots like this
killzone-shadow-fall-5.jpg
I would not say the other assets look that great.

That's got to be the most idiotic comparison on neogaff EVER. Figured it would be come console gamer that finally did it.

You do know that Rome Total war is rendering THOUSANDS of those units, running AI, animations, pathfinding, etc, right? Vs like 5 or 10 character max on that terrible Ryse game for the Xbone.

Jeebus, do your research before you make yourself look like a tool.

I know, and why these technicalities aren't considered when looking at Dead Rising 3 is beyond me :-p

Oh yeah, totally agree with you (that character model of the SMG helghan looks like crap tbh).
I was mainly referring to their asset showcases for weapons and character models in studio lighting conditions.

Some really low res textures on that Helghast model. Just look at the pouch.

The character models are being improved before release, GG have already stated as much. I expect KZ SF to be improved on many fronts before release. The core campaign was actually finished a couple of months ago, so they've had and have time to continue to keep polishing.

Guerilla is not a dev you doubt on graphics and technical ability without expecting to eat copious amounts of crow.

Guys, remember, Killzone: SF is coming at launch. A launch title is no way to judge the graphical capabilities of a new console.

Did GEOW launch with Xbox 360? No. It launched about 1 year later. Similarly, PS3 games that showed its graphical capabilities properly didn't start appearing on the console until in 2009 or essentially 2 years after its release.

Despite being a launch title, it looks mighty impressive. Yes, it has its ups and downs as well as evident in screenshots but if the devs had a few extra month or year to further polish the title, we would've been seeing different result.

Where did they explicitly say they are improving character models?

I don't have a link, but in one of the threads somewhere there was a titbit about how the devs mentioned at a presentation or talk that there were new improved models that would be in the game (as shown off in the slides and in the presentation) and that the one's in the reveal demo's were older models.

EDIT: Tbh, you can already see the improvements.

That's true, but I thought PS3 games eventually started looking better because developers became a lot more experienced with the PS3 hardware which wasn't common?

Now that the next gen consoles are more closer to PC (I think?), doesn't that mean there won't be as much improvements as the years go by because developers should be more familiar with the hardware straight away?

It does look better than a lot of pc games. For example, it's more beautiful to look at than Arma 3.

Hah, no. It's not. The Last of Us is a nice looking game for what it's running on, but it's a jaggy, blurry, low resolution mess in motion and the frame rate /chugs/ if there's any semblance of activity visible. I respect what Naughty Dog was able to accomplish with the game, but it's very difficult to play if you haven't been gaming exclusively on console for the last 8 years.

More in common doesn't mean it is easy to max it out right from the start. Cerny calls "GPU Compute the new SPU of Cell" and it took developers quite some time to understand how to effectively utilize the SPUs in their games.

Also this experience with hardware thing is not limited to PS3 only. Look at the past hardware like PS1/PS2. Look at earlier PS2 titles and then look at GOW 2 that was released at the end of the console life cycle. The developers were able to maximize the potential of the hardware because of their experience working with them. The development tools are also improved with time.

360 was just pc hardware and that certainly saw a hell of a lot of improvement over its lifetime. Just compare Halo 4 and GOW Judgement to Condemned, Perfect Dark Zero, Quake 4, etc.

But if you give them enough time it will turn into an upgrade.

Not if the hardware is holding it back. No amount of coding can bypass that key factor.

Also I've been calling it, these are tech demos, run on PCs what did people honestly expect those games to look like that on a console? LOL, come on.

Can't wait to play all these multiplats maxed out. Gonna be great.

Reading stuff like this just reminds me how much I don't care about any of this technical nonsense. Seriously, what the fuck are you even saying.

Look at the bottom of this pic

near the VG24/7 logo, see that strange patten on the scrubs?

And if you do not care, do not post.

Except for the fire, there's nothing about the Deep Down reveal that should be too hard for PS4 hardware. It wasn't CG or a target render.
