[Horse Detective]

Lets discuss films with beautifully shot settings. (Please don't just list things. It would be nice if you put effort into explaining what you like about each one.)

The first one I want to discuss is "Moon".

I don't know what it is about this movie that I find so visually appealing. It has such a claustrophobic setting to match the plot, yet anytime anything happens, I am just amazed by the cinematography. That goes especially for the shots on the surface of the moon. I just find all of the shades of blues, whites and grays beautiful.

Brilliant use of color and imaginative costume and character design. Very nice locales, too.
The vivid imagery of the story-telling sequences contrast nicely with the real world scenes.

Why do I even bother

Enter the Void for sure. It's pretty crazy in many aspects visually; cinematography especially. It makes use of first person and third person views which is very unusual. It's not a terribly visually interesting setting but the use of the cinematography makes even the most mundane settings much more interesting to see.

What the hell does this even mean? The first poster in a thread about visually stunning films is also one of the most notable members on Gaf for anything film related, and the first thing he does is blatantly ignore something in the OP that was supposed to make this more enjoyable.

I liked An American Werewolf in London's visuals I know it is a old film but I liked the contrast of day and night as well as the city and the countryside in the film.

I have always liked A Girl Who Leapt through Time's visuals... I just felt the back grounds had nice detail going on.

It holds up unbelievably well for a movie made in 1968. A real testament to phenomenal set design and cinematography.

One recent example that springs to mind is Aardman's Pirates, the cinematography of which is simply bum-blowingly beautiful.

Pretty intelligent use of CG as well.

Sunshine

The use of lights is extremely good in this film and the color usage is really spectacular at times.

Alien

The ship looks lived in and very down to earth. The small size of the corridors also adds to the tension level in certain scenes.

Yeah I did not like that long scene with the monkeys (then again I am dumb and the purpose probably went over my head) and the pacing of the film felt slow to me.

I agree with you on set design, the colors were pretty awesome in that film too.

For me, it would be another movie in space, Sunshine, for each of the Sun apparition, I feel like it can be considered as a protagonist, a hypnotizing character.
So, for me, it qualifies as stunning because each time the sun appears, the scenery seems to slow, whereas it's just to show the immensity of the star against the tiny ship and/or because there's a feeling of danger.

No kidding, while you get a sense that the movie was indeed made in 60s it still looks so good. Everything inside the space ship is just gorgeous from desing to use of colour.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World-- It's layers upon layers of hyper reality stylization. It's already beautifully shot with some great camera work and framing. Then there's shifts in frame rate, mixed in with semi-transparent onomatopoeias, distortion, light effects, and so on. It's insane.

What Dreams May Come-- It's heaven and hell, but it's done in a unique, new way. Heaven is a painting, that varies in how detailed it as time goes by. The story kind of falls apart near the end, but the movie's so damn pretty that I find it hard to not forgive it.

Such an amazing and odd use of perspective, the amazing odd camera angles and geometry of the bombed out city itself, everything about it was unnerving

Rango-- It's a CG animation, but it's one that's unique in just how dirty, gritty, and downright ugly it can be. The main character is asymmetrical, and none of the side characters are much to look at. But they're all made with such a style that their ugliness almost becomes beautiful. The photo-realistic quality of the textures, sculpted into such cartoonish and twisted forms is amazing, and the sets and backdrops are equally striking.

Dick Tracy-- It's a live action movie with a comic strip color palette.

So my vote clearly goes out to one of my favorite films of all time, Fargo:

Nothing is forced here, every scene is beautifully shot and very simple, it simply tells the story of these characters and the environment they are in; mentally and physically.

Honorable mention goes to "Let The Right One In" (The Swedish version) that I am too tired to Google images for.
