Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | December 2013 |

Guys, sorry for the silly question.

I'm still very new to PS Plus, trying to understand how this works for my VITA.

I see sonic and urban freestyle as the free ps plus games for North America in December. However when I checked lass night, I saw oddworld and soul sacrifice.

Does PS plus get updated in the middle of the month with new games/deals? Is that why I still saw oddworld and soul sacrifice as free games?

I finally started up Rogue Legacy last night on Steam...I need this on my Vita. The "one more run" feeling is STRONG. I seriously cannot wait for the Vita release.

Same here! I'm purposefully stopping after defeating the first boss just so I can wait for the Vita release.

Those games will be free for plus members by the end of this month for us plus members. Us psn releases at least 1 plus free game each week of a month.

I'll definitely be grabbing Rogue Legacy as well when it arrives

If you like that game you should definitely buy Terraria

I played the absolute shit out of Terraria when it first came out on PC. I'm trying to convince myself to buy it on Vita, but I'm having a hard time because of my growing backlog. I may do it just to support the devs for now...

If you have more than 30 points left and aren't getting diamond from any challenges, you are not going to get Platinum after today. The Murphy challenge today is completely broken, you can't get through it because Globox jumps straight into a fiery pit no matter what you do at a certain part.

Thankfully I'm only 5 points short and I should have got those points from yesterdays challenges (not turned on my Vita this morning).
Not happy to hear about that glitch, I've had a few over the months with Globox doing stupid things or not jumping when he needs to etc. Still doesn't beat the odd glitch on the never ending pit level where you will routintely miss grabbing one of the blue swinging platforms. That was never patched even after the levels were added back in which annoyed me.

On a lighter note I'm really hoping Broken Sword 5 is an excellent port. I have just enough money for the first two parts on the Vita and I love the first two games so much (not got round to playing 3 or 4 yet).

Gotcha thanks guy, so next week one of those two games will be available and then the final week of december the next.

How come I need to buy flOw again when I bought years ago in my PS3?

Other people have reported this issue on the PlayStation Blog. Seems like a weird glitch. I think Kristine Steimer said to contact Sony support.
I know I never actually bought flOw, but got it free on the PS Store at one point. As such, I had to purchase it yesterday to get the three copies. Could that be what is going on? I had no problem paying the $6, though, since I never actually paid for it to begin with.

Does it have analogue controls or is it tilt and touch only?

EU PSN VITAGAF!
Broken Sword 5 is now available on EU PSN, if you like adventure games, def. get it!
Ep. 1 is 10 Pounds and 8 Pounds for Plus members
Ep. 1+2 Bundle is 16 Pounds and 12.79 Pounds for Plus members

Really good discount for Plus members, now hopefully the game runs well on the Vita XP

That's only for the UK store? I tried looking it up but couldn't find it. (I live in Finland)

EDIT: Weird, didn't find it looking through the Vita but on the website it's available.

Some tips as a ps+ member.

When you see a game given for free, add it to your cart using the SEN website and check out. Reason being, every game checked out this way is permanently added to your account for you to download as long as you remain a subscriber. This includes ps3 and ps4 games, whether you own those systems or not.

PS3 games are usually given in the first 2 weeks of the month. Vita games the last 2 weeks.

Games given for free are announced the Monday before the first update of the month.

Some of the games in the instant games collection will stay for the entire year. These are usually first party developed titles. The rest are swapped every couple of weeks.

PlayStation Mobile is now available here in Finland, but the selection seems to be very limited. Rymdkapsel looks interesting, are there any other games that you guys would recommend?

Is this true? Origins is one of my favourite (and occasionally most frustrating) Platinums... if I basically can't get it for Legends I'll be fucking annoyed.

I've become quite fond of my vita. The app switching is tremendous.. Though it makes me long for savestates for true add gaming bliss.

So... I got mine used. I got a 3G model for 180$ I think it was. My oled definitely has some burn in.. It's more splotchiness, I guess. Only visible on black screens but it's really pretty bad if you stare at it. It obviously becomes invisible when the screen displays color.. But on those fades to black during loads it really is pretty ugly.

Should I take it back? Live with it? Is there some spazzy color flashing thing I can run for 20 hours to fix it?

Your Vita is fine. Those black spots are normal for OLED screens. You'll get used to it.

So on Christmas day I'll be getting with my Vita;

Tearaway
LBP
Rayman Legends
Jak & Daxter Trilogy

And possible Spelunky/Hotline Miami/some PSone Classics if I get a PSN Voucher, and I'll probably try out PSN Plus so Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Guacamelee, and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed.

This really is going to be the insane backlog system isn't it?

Eeh, I never actually saw him as a troll... he's just sometimes being too upfront... or maybe I should say honest, when voicing his opinions... perhaps even brutally so, hahaha.

Anyways, we shouldn't fight each other :)

Fair enough :)

Sorry Toto, for talking about you like this! Hahaha.

I actually like Toto .. no hate here. It's almost a much welcome opinion (on occasion) which seems to spice up the community. Not everything is hugs and high fives with the Vita or anything gaming related for that matter.

Toto .. if you're in NY, drinks on me!

It's not a defect. It's just a characteristic of OLED screens. When you're in a very dark room, and the screen is all black, you'll see splotches. If there is a moderate amount of light in the environment you are playing, you won't see the splotches.

In a dark environment, black screens on OLED have splotches. In a dark environment, black screens on LCD have horrible backlight bleed resulting in a grey-looking screen instead of black. However, in a LIT environment, black screens on OLED are completely black, while black screens on LCD still don't have pure blacks.

K, well. That's just not true. The black levels on an all black screen on the vita are definitely not better than my iPhone. And the splotchiness is heartbreaking. I do feel significantly better knowing it's just a common defect and I didn't get a lemon though.

But wow yeah, I can't imagine what sony was thinking when they let this slide. The colors on the oled screen are certainly impressive but it is not worth the trade off and the colors are only ever so slightly better than my other high end mobile devices.

Also, has anyone been able to hack save states into the psone/psp emulation? It's a super drag going through menus every time I hop into a game.

Most people probably aren't bothered by the splotches, especially since they're not viewable during gameplay for the most part. It's a sacrifice that I will gladly make in exchange for the best screen on a portable game system to date.

While I'm at it it drives me crazy the camera lens isn't perfectly centered with the faceplate too.

And the underside of the lanyardloops! What the fuck man.

It's just this challenge, one of the daily/weekly challenges that rotate out, and it's an anomaly.... but, the trophy associated with the challenges is a tough get regardless. 'cept for one guy here who I remember screen capping a platinum in week 1 heh

I set brightness to ~80%, and in a pitch black room with the Vita displaying an all black screen, I can barely make out slight splotches. It's barely noticeable in those conditions. Other than those specific conditions, no matter what the Vita is displaying, it looks 100% perfect. Is it a matter of time before mine starts to get worse, or do I have a panel that just doesn't have any issues?

Yes it is. I have an iPhone, an iPad, and at least three or four other devices with nice IPS displays, and the Vita screen is by far my favorite, and some splotchiness while in a pitch black environment won't for a second take away from the far superior saturation, contrast and black levels. I actually found your black level comment hilarious since the pixels on something on the screen that is supposed to be black are literally OFF on the Vita, so it has pure blacks. Black pixels are lit on iPhone. It does a great job with black levels but you get into an environment that's even a little dark and the black levels go to poop.

I will forever be grateful that Sony was thinking OLED.

I like y'all and the vitas real hot but y'all are crazy. Colors don't matter if they sell you an improperly manufactured screen.

Is it an OG Vita? Mine has those, too...I think it's a result of dat OLED.

I know the exposure exacerbates the visibility ever so slightly here. (Mostly the green tint)
But you guys are saying this is acceptable:

(mine is actually worse)

Whatever. I will never get over this so we might as well stop talking about it. The idea this is acceptable is offensive to me as a person.

Damn, that's a defective screen. Mine is NOT like that AT ALL.

Woah woah woah. Woah. Woah. Soon to be new Vita OLED owner. How the fuck do I prevent... whatever that shit is? D:
You don't. That's how they're made, apparently.
Who knew? I certainly didn't. The vita was a sort of impulse TREAT YO'SELF purchase for me.

Damn, that's a defective screen. Mine is like that AT ALL.
Mine is worse, in my opinion. I'll try take a photo of it when I get out of bed. Again it's not noticeable when you're actually doing anything other than staring a blank black screen. So anytime the vita loads and it fades to black it becomes apparent. But it doesn't have any bearing on gameplay.

Yes...ever so slightly exacerbated...okay. I've seen this. I've had OLED panels in devices for YEARS. It's still by far my favorite display tech. Do you only play in very dark rooms or something? That's bad for your eyesight. Maybe you should put a few lights on.

"My iPhone and iPad have this really bad greyish blue tint on a black screen when I'm in a dark room. It doesn't look remotely black! WHAT WERE APPLE THINKING?!"

Dude until I take a picture of mine you'll just have to take my word for it. It really is as noticeable as that picture above. That picture isn't like tuned to make it look worse than it actually is.

Never buy an OLED screen then, it's how all the OLED screens works.

Try looking at the black levels on an iPod/iPhone/iPad before saying that they look better.

Yes, it's definitely a problem. I just don't understand why you're so bothered by it when you even said that you can't see the splotches during normal gameplay until you get to a black loading screen.

Woah woah woah. Woah. Woah. Soon to be new Vita OLED owner. How the fuck do I prevent... whatever that shit is? D:
It's really not that big of a deal.

Is this true? Origins is one of my favourite (and occasionally most frustrating) Platinums... if I basically can't get it for Legends I'll be fucking annoyed.
It's just the Daily Challenge for today. As the name implies, those change daily, so tomorrow is a new day and a new challenge that you CAN complete. Though, that doesn't change the fact that the Murfy levels are sucky, there's no question about that. The campaign Murfy levels aren't that bad since those don't require quite the kind of precision the challenges do, but yeah, the Murfy shit is definitely the weakest part of the game.

And, well, depending on how good you are, be prepared for a long, loooong, LOOOOOOONG grind for Platinum. It's not like Rayman Origins where you get Platinum for just 100%'ing the game and doing some arbitrary feats in some levels. Legends has this thing called Awesomeness level and one of the trophies is the kind where you have to level up to the final Awesomeness level to get the trophy. The Awesomeness level is basically a completely worthless, "adds-absolutely-nothing-to-the-game" addition where you get points from every Teenie and every bronze, silver, gold and diamond trophy you can get from all the levels/worlds and those points level up your Awesomeness level. They are worthless as the levels don't really DO anything. You don't get any new skills, you don't really unlock anything with the Awesomeness levels... nothing.

Thing is, the handcrafted levels only get you to less than 4000 points while the final level of Awesomeness requires 6000 points. After you've 100% the campaign and the Origins levels, the only way to get more trophies for more points are the Daily & Weekly Challenges. After each day/week, you get 1 point from a bronze trophy, 5 points from a silver trophy, 10 points from a gold trophy and 50 points from a diamond trophy. The grind for Platinum wouldn't be too bad if the game had sold gangbusters and millions of people were playing the game daily, but as it didn't and there aren't, the Top 1% getting the diamond trophy often means that it's only the Top 5-13 in Daily Challenges and maybe Top 20-30 in the Weekly Challenges who have any chance of getting one. So unless you are a top player, you are likely not going to get much else but Gold and MAYBE an occasional Diamond if the level happens to be the kind that just kind of clicks with you. That means you are basically limited to 20 points per day, so... yeah, you'll probably face a ~100 day grind for Platinum, if you play the game daily, more if you're not good enough a gamer to even get gold (and of course less if you're a super-gamer who can get Diamonds from all challenges)

Dude until I take a picture of mine you'll just have to take my word for it. It really is as noticeable as that picture above. That picture isn't like tuned to make it look worse than it actually is.

It's actually explicitly tuned to make it look worse. The exposure was pumped up to make the effect more noticeable. Why don't you respond to my other questions? Do you only play your Vita is very dark rooms? If you tend to use your devices in such dark environments, do you not also get annoyed by the bright "blacks" of an IPS panel in your iPhone?

Never buy an OLED screen then, it's how all the OLED screens works.

I spend probably 80% of my time looking at a 4S and an iPad mini, 18% of my time looking at a 120hz strobing TN panel and the remaining 2% divided up amongst my handhelds. The oled in the vita is nothing it write home about. It's also the only one that's fundamentally broken.

Woah woah woah. Woah. Woah. Soon to be new Vita OLED owner. How the fuck do I prevent... whatever that shit is? D:

Is your primary use of the Vita going to be starting at a blank screen in a pitch dark room?

If you answer "no" to the above you'll be fine, it will not impact you AT ALL.
