VVVVVV coming to 3DS eShop, published by Nicalis

You guys got the wrong impression about me...I've already played and beaten this game on PC. There is no reason I would ever ever ever want this on 3DS, because I hate handheld gaming.

If anything, this screenshot just tells me that I wish the game was at the very least on DSiware, and not 3ds. The game isn't even 16x9, so the top screen will have those black borders on the sides. Not to mentioned when I've played the 3DS, i found the screens way too small, especially after having a DSi XL.
At this point you're pretty clearly either actually crazy and should never be listened to or you're making things up as you go along.

Or perhaps both!

Regardless, if you have no interest in this, does it do you or anyone else any good to continue on this path?

Well it says there's going to be "future content upgrades", which as far as I'm aware, isn't possible on DSiWare. Not to mention the 3D-ness.

Well, maybe they will fix the top screen before launch >.<?

How would it be fixed? This is a non-scrolling game. The level design is made for 4:3. They'd have to redesign every screen.

Ugh, there is so much wrong with your posts. The DS's resolution is 256x192, the 3DS's 400x240/320x240 and the original VVVVVV game's resolution is 640x480 (not to mention the sprites are doubled). Do the math.

If they were to put it on the DSi, they'd have to completely redesign the levels to fit with the DS resolution in mind, whereas the 3DS version they can resize the resolution by 50% and not lose any detail.

So you want the game at an even less ideal resolution?

ACHIEVEMENTS!! lol, I like being social and comparing achievements with friends. Most people I know will never know what VVVVVV is because most are not PC gamers, and sure as hell don't own a 3DS. I wanna tell more people to get it and play it. Easier sell on XB360/PS3

Any PC can run the original.

Besides, 3DS release = extra screen dedicated to map.

I don't get it, isn't port begging not allowed anyway?

How would the European release hold up the NA one?

I think they want to release the English versions all at once? Not entirely sure.

Well that's a nice surprise. But knowing these guys, we probably won't get it for another 2 years or so!

Speaking of which, where the hell is La Mulana Wii Ware, Ikachan DSiWare and Night Sky 3DS?!

I don't think Ikachan and Nightsky 3DS were ever officially announced, just spitballed by the Nicalis dude in interviews. Nightsky WiiWare was, though - it was originally WiiWare exclusive, in fact - but I don't think that's ever coming out.

Good thing Nintendo has nothing to do with another publishers price.

They kinda do, or at least they do with WiiWare/DSiWare stuff... if your game is a certain filesize and/or includes certain features (online play, leaderboards, support for extra peripherals/hardware like MotionPlus/Balance Board, etc) then they'll push you to release the game at a certain price point.

It has been for months in Japan. Dunno what's taking so long everywhere else?

I feel worse for Japan, they're not getting Cave Story WiiWare/DSiWare at all. Pixel can't even buy his own game. [/boggle]

Self-publishing Nintendo games in Japan is practically impossible; they won't even give you the time of day if you don't have a physical presence there. I have no idea if Nicalis ever tried for a Japanese release, but I'm not surprised that it hasn't happened.

La-Mulana was developed entirely by NIGORO and they published it themselves in Japan; Nicalis are just publishing in NA/PAL-land, they didn't develop it like they did with Cave Story/Nightsky.

They want to release simultaneously, but the German ratings board was sitting on their game for no particular reason so they've been waiting for months to get a response. I think they got the all-clear recently, though.

Achievements...trophies! There are no achievements/trophies on PC.

I threw up in my mouth and then swallowed it, ymm pizza.

On topic this game sounds like a lot of fun in portable form with a dpad and map below.

Yep. The reason the aspect ratio hasn't been changed is because of how the rooms are linked together. There's no screen scrolling so you can't just change the aspect ratio without rebuilding the whole game from scratch.

It's annoying and counter productive to legitimate discussion about the game.

More music from SoulEye is all it takes to have me on board. VVVVVV had some of the best chiptune compositions I'd heard in a long time.

NIGORO has stated that it wants to release both simultaneously. They released in Japan first because of the slowdowns involved, but they really wanted a worldwide release.

What does this play like? Is this a Metroidvania where you can get lost with emphasis on "exploration"? Or is the challenge in platforming like Mario or Super Meat Boy? Or is it action/platforming like Mega Man? Always interested in more platformers.

Why not try the demo on Steam? That's the best way to find out.

The first two. Pretty challenging but focusing on exploration.

Play the demo on Steam or watch a video online, and you'll get a feel of what it's like. It's a trial and error platformer, sort of like Super Meat Boy.

It's actually Metroid-like too, because it's one big connected sidescrolling open world, with different "sections" scattered within it. Very little reason to backtrack, though. (I honestly think that the game doesn't benefit too much from being open world, and would prefer it level based.)

Focusing on exploration isn't quite right. It has exploration as a component but it's not a focus. It's a pacing break more then anything else. The real focus is on Meat Boy style, fast and furious platforming.

Edit: Also the exploration component is nothing like Metroid.

'bout time 3dsware got a good 3rd party game. I look forward to playing this version (accelerometer would be neat) in 2014 when the system is uh...at its peak (was going to go with irrelevant). this isn't meant to be a slight, but indie devs have a very, very poor track record getting "big" games out on nintendo services on time.

Awesome. Thanks. This is I'll give a try to.

I love platformers, but tend to favor the Mario/Meat Boy/Mega Man types rather than the Metroid/Castlevania types.
This is actually much more like Meat Boy than Metroid. There's a little bit of exploration between levels, but once you find one, it's pretty fast run/die/respawn/repeat action like Meat Boy. In fact, it'd definitely say it's more like MB than any other game.

In the demo, you won't get to experience the Metroid-like exploration areas, but when playing the full game, you'll spend so little time in those areas that you might forget they exist. The bulk of the game are the linear levels/sections in the game like the one in the demo.

I really don't know why I said it was focused on exploration. Everyone who's saying the opposite is correct. It's really more of a hub that leads to "levels"

Why would you do that? said:

Sounds great. The nice thing about this gen is the revival of the platformer. The hard part is picking out which I want to play.

Yes they were. Ikachan DSi was shown in Nintendo Power http://go nintendo.com/wp-content/photos/kilm.jpg and NightSky was officially confirmed (will display in 2D only) http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/24/nicalis-bringing-nightsky-to-3ds-eshop-in-2d/

I might doubledip, but no map editor? However despite enjoying this game on the keyboard im not sure if the DS D-pad would be as good and the nub would be too sensitive.

Looking at that last screenshot, I now know why the game is called VVVVVV. It's all their names.

That's one reason. I've also taken it to symbolically represent the omnipresent spikes.

It's also the pattern that Captain V moves in since he 'flips' from ceiling to floor instead of jumping over obstacles.

It also represents the direction of gravity!

Someone tell me more about this Nicalis and what they did to earn this reputation.
Cave Story was announced for WiiWare, and it was going to come in a few months, and it ended up coming 18 months later or something like that. La Mulana for WiiWare was announced like a year and a half ago and it's still nowhere to be seen. NightSky was announced for WiiWare FIRST in like 2007 and the PC version came out at the beginning of this year and the WiiWare version is still missing. And Cave Story 3D has been delayed a million times already too.

Nicalis kind of annoys me for this reason. I'm not going to look forward to the 3DS port of VVVVVVVVVVV, but I might buy it when it comes out.

And I suppose the 3D light on the screen is lit because of a bug?
