VVVVVV coming to 3DS eShop, published by Nicalis

It's hard to call a quality game overpriced at 8 dollars, but it is on sale for 1.24 on Steam right now. This is what changes people's perceptions.
Bah. I got it via Humble Bundle and I regret nothing getting the 3DS version.

Everything's custom taylored for the system, from the map screen and button prompts. Only thing odd is that the title has a "B = Back" even though it won't exit out to some sort of attract mode.

Also love the Spikes Graph in the manual.

Just downloaded VVVVVV, it's great. The 3D is subtle but I like it, and the game plays just like the PC version (which I already own).

About two hours to finish the game, or even less if you don't bother trying to find trinkets. A lot of that time is spent traversing a pointless, empty overworld, as well.
I disagree with this. My first time through the game was about 3 1/2 hours I think, and that wasn't trying to get all the trinkets (though I did get a lot of them). Heck, a person could spend hours just on Veni Vidi Vici, the hardest trinket. And of course, that's just the main game, there are a bunch of extra levels to play that aren't part of the main game, there are also a number of achievements to try for, and of course you can try to beat the game in less deaths (you may die 1000 times your first play through!)

And "traversing a pointless empty overworld" is a very downer way to say "Metroidesque exploration" trying to find the levels, teleporters, and trinkets :)

Why is that laughably overpriced?

Because the game's been $2.50 more or less constantly for over a year on its original platform? Whether vvvvvv is a game that's worth $8 in a vacuum or not (I'd certainly be inclined to say it is) late ports that outprice their predecessors are rarely well-received. (In this case, it's a port with less content for more money than even the off-sale price of the PC version.)

I disagree with this. My first time through the game was about 3 1/2 hours I think, and that wasn't trying to get all the trinkets (though I did get a lot of them).

Yeah, two hours is just false.

So, weird tangential hopefully not off-topic question:

I just got Chrono Trigger DS the other day, super-excited to finally play this gem... and the screen of the DS Lite is just WOEFULLY small, and I find I'm really not enjoying it.

I've looked at comparison pics of the 3DS and I just can't tell if it's that big a difference. What's the consensus? It's only .4 inches bigger... I don't know if that's enough.

Its not that much bigger. If you can afford it, I'd suggest grabbing an XL

The extra 0.4 inches translates purely to the wider aspect ratio. The 3DS's top screen is the same height as the DS lite's screens (and the bottom screen is identical in size). On top of that, since the 3DS screens are higher res, if you don't want your DS games to look blurry then the image is even smaller with 1:1 mode enabled.

Like The_Technomancer said, Get a DSiXL if you want to play on a bigger screen.

There's nothing Metroidesque about the overworld at all. It doesn't contain any items or powerups that improve the main character's abilities, and it doesn't contain any enemies or obstacles other than some occasional spikes, or really anything that impedes your progress in any way. The overworld only exists to artificially extend the length of the game.
Yeah, two hours is just false.

Uh, no it's not. I beat the game in under two hours my first time playing it while finding 15 out of 20 trinkets (including Doing Things the Hard Way). It takes longer if you try to find every trinket, but the guy I was responding to didn't seem like he would be very interested in doing that. The game only consists of 6 levels/areas and none of them take particularly long to finish.

EDIT: Here's a playlist of a guy doing a blind playthrough in an hour and a half.

Like I said in the other thread, for those of you saying it is a bit too short:

The game has 18 Player Levels on top of the main game.
These 18 levels are roughly 1/10 to 1/2 the length of the main game a piece.
10 of them are from the PC Update, the other 8 are exclusive to this game.

It seems a Level Editor or means to import levels is not in this version, but I've heard that it will be implemented if enough people purchase the current version. Also, Swap Mode or whatever it is seems to not work properly right now.

Odd works for me.

I just ultra impulse downloaded this game for my 3DS after literally just reading about it an hour ago. I'm not a steam/PC gamer kind of guy so while this game might be old news for most, it's completely new to me. I gotta say that I'm really digging it, surprisingly. I'm usually not that big of a fan of these web browser-like games and the Indy scene usually isn't my cup of tea. I can't stand shit like Minecraft and Terraria and Super Meat Boy and Braid didn't do much for me.

This game, however, is clicking with me on some sort of level. I think a big part of the reason is its OST. The music is pretty fucking awesome! One of the reasons why I usually dislike these sorts of games is because there is hardly ever any context for what you are doing. I like that there is an actual crew that speaks and the game seems to be sprinkled with little cut scenes here in there. Maybe because I didn't have any expectations, but I like how the game kind of just dumps you on the map and you can tackle any area by exploring. The little trinkets hidden everywhere are fun to collect too.

There seems to be a lot of content too. There are time trials with S Ranks to earn and a ton of player levels, which I guess are notable user made 'games' that the developers thought were exceptional so they included them in the game from the start? They are like, entirely full length games too with their own world maps, save file slot, and new trinkets to collect too. Pretty cool.

Only thing that was weird to me was the fact that you could unlock all the unlockable bonus goodies from the start. What the fuck is that about? Who would want to unlock shit without earning your rewards/meeting requirements? Fuck that shit, I'll earn that stuff myself, lol!

Still has. Just tried it today (PC).

Or maybe it's some weird acceleration...It feels just like MegaMan 1 and 2 to me...weird, unresponsive, slippery controls. Not nearly as responsive as something like Super Meat Boy.
Yeah, there's something off with the controls imo, too. I haven't tried the game since this august or something though, but I think we are experiencing the same thing.

Great game otherwise.

It's awesome that you mentioned this. I was about 30 minutes into the game when I came across this trinket. Having never played the game before, I figured the difficulty behind this particular section was just an example of a generally difficult game. Although, that did worry me a bit, as I had spent a little over an hour trying to obtain it. But on the bright side I'm more than well equipped for whatever is thrown at me next.

I own this game on PC, I gave it a few minutes as a 'taster' but I'm not likely to ever sit down and play it there. A portable version is definitely more ideal for me, especially if it's just available to play whenever I feel like it.

Just downloaded the game. Pretty fun, but don't expect to put too much time into it. I just like the idea of indie devs supporting the 3DS eShop, so I figured I might support it, even if it may make no difference.

This was the hardest trinket? I got it in 15 minutes, I feel like a pro.

Hardest for me. Took 45 minutes. Though game edge or something edge(had like 3 rows of flying fish.) had the most deaths in a room. 98.
It took me like 90 deaths to realize I was doing it work lol.

I would lie if I told you guys that the fact that this games is available for very cheap on other platforms doens't make me uneasy of buying this game for $8. However, If I buy this game for Steam the odds that it will sit on backlog forever are dam high (Terraria, Limbo, BoI, ToTS are currently in that situation :( ). However, if I buy it for 3DS is as good as played.

Is all about accessibility for me. The reason why I don't play my consoles much anymore.

Bought it when it was 11 dollars at day one on PC (and not avaible on Steam) and i will also buy this 3DS port at full price when Nicalis will release it on the EU eShop, in my opinion this is one of the best platform games ever.

Just bought this game. Have played for about an hour so far. It is extremely addicting and fills my platformer fix. Great music too. Really fun game though I've died probably a couple hundred times already. Thank god there's no game over screen.

Is there any actual reason to think that this will come to Europe at all? I mean, have they released anything in Europe, ever?! I know they keep saying that Cave Story will come out, but there isn't a release date for either version! What is their problem?

I hope the EU price won't be 8€/. I have it on PC and I love it, I would double dip with a 5€ (6€ max) price

Cave Story came out on Wii eventually, and Cave Story 3D came out promptly.

I literally had no idea the Wii version was out. I stand corrected, thanks. Is there any reason I shouldn't go download it right now? I assume it's the best version?

The Steam version is better - all the same content as the Wii version with extras on top (3DS soundtrack, exclusive challenge areas).

I'll wait until early Jan, see if I can buy this with Club Nintendo coins in their next store update, and when it turns out I can't I will buy it.

When it first came out I was only mildly interested in this game. I watched a Let's Play of it and afterward bought the soundtrack instead of the game! (called PPPPPP by Souleye.)

Later I got the game in one of the humble bundles and really enjoyed it. I think this version will be worth it too.

But yeah, the music...this music...just the best.
