Warcraft - Leaked SDCC Footage

Davy Jones looks great in stills for the most part, but in motion he is still clearly a product of his time. I mean this clip doesn't look great, but it is hard to judge it based off of a spud's bootleg recording meant for con attendees that won't have a trailer released to the public for another four months. Probably due to VFX too.
Jones is pretty much Photorealistic. What's wrong with this?

I think the actual quality of the CGI is nice, but the actual aesthetic looks way too "video game". That won't change just because the video quality improves. I'm hoping once we see more footage of other locations it becomes more visually interesting and looks less like one long cutscene.

Wasn't really feeling that footage that much. We knew the Orcs were CGI but I wasn't expecting all of Draenor being CGI. I feel like it's gonna be offputting when they go over to Azeroth and everything is suddenly realish.

Blizzard has definitely spent way too much time on Orcs in WoW as of late, but why shouldn't they take the spotlight a bit in a movie that's almost entirely about Orcs and Humans? We have thousands of movies about Humans, we see Humans every day of our lives.

And while an Arthas movie would probably be amazing, it would make even less sense to the masses. It needs a base, and an adaptation of the first game is exactly the right base for a movie franchise.

Both of those shots are also at night and in the rain, which does wonders for CG. In the daytime, Davy looks a lot more iffy.

This. Or in a number of action heavy sequences where Jones is very animated and not the central focus. I'm not saying that Jones doesn't look great, but let's not pretend that the same company would not be able to improve on themselves after ten years.

Well to be fair, it is an adaptation of the first Warcraft game. I wouldn't be surprised if Draenor only appears in like 5-10 minutes overall. Majority of the events takes place in Azeroth.

You guys are crazy. Movie looks good/Sounds good and will do great.

It looks like it has a ways to go on polish though. At least I hope some of those wonky animations go away.

Early footage, CG takes a lot of polish to get it right, but I'm hoping it's not a big part of the film.

Quality is one thing, but I think the prospect of it doing well is still very much up for debate.

The movie is definitely coming up late. If it was released back in 2009-2011 when WoW was at its peak, it would make easy money.

Still, i can see this doing well in international audiences, China specifically, where Warcraft is still pretty popular.

But I'm mostly sick of fucking Orcs

Oh god, this. Deathwing killed by Thrall because green Jesus. Pandaria introduced a bunch of new races and lore spread over a new continent. Main bad guy and last boss? An Orc in Orgrimmar, 'captured' by Thrall. Now we're trekking around the Orc homeworld experiencing stories solely concerning Orcs, waiting for the film about Orcs invading Azeroth (but seriously guys, they're hungry so it's ok, they're actually really cool guys).

It's not even that I'm predominantly an alliance player, I've split my time with WoW fairly evenly between the two factions, I'm just fucking sick of Orcs. Give some of the alliance something to do. Hell, I even heard that there are other races in the horde, if you can imagine such a thing?!

Eh, I still think Davy Jones looks more convincing.

The last WoW commercial I saw actually looked better than those renders. Which...might be a good thing? I can only assume that the effects artists are shooting for a higher quality bar than anything released in connection with WoW so far.

  • Tauren
  • Dwarves
  • Gnomes
  • Worgen
  • Undead
  • Blood Elves

All in dire need of new lore.

But ORCSORCSORCS

I'm pretty sure this is the beginning of the movie. Mind that I could only watch it with sound off, but for the structure of the movie it would make sense.

The whole movies focuses around the conflict of Orcs finding their place in the world of men. And resulting in war, right? It wouldn't make much sense to have Orcs in Draenor for half the movie and having the world at war in the other half. It should build up to war from the moment the Orcs invade the other World.

I somehow have faith in this movie. Dunno where exactly it comes from, since I only played WC3 of the Warcraft Saga, didn't really like Duncans Source Code and am not pleased with Blizzard these last few years. But he seems to bleed passion for this project, he vowed to make both Orcs and Humans heroes and he has the budget and the tech and from what I heard a solid script behind him. That's a lot more positives than the Hobbit Trilogy for me. And we could use a well made, high fantasy movie series that has (good) lore to go around for a couple of movies.
I expect this to do well. Maybe not FF7 or JW well, but well enough for WC2. It will have a lot of marketing behind it and as long as its decent, fans will eat it up and produce good word of mouth.

I can't really understand this line of thinking. We are starting at the beginning with the movie. When writers were a lot better at Blizzard and we still have 3 games + add-ons to cover until we get to the point of orcsorcsorcs.

Don't worry, the Arthas movie will only be 95% Ner'zhul.

I highly doubt they don't polish with all that extra time.
Why would they? If the movie is done then it's done, no point in wasting money hiring some other vfx studio to touch up some effects because I assume ILM wouldn't continue working on the film if they finished what they were suppose to in the contracted time frame.

Wow, they are going out of their way to make the orcs empathizable. Shit, you're hungry? Why don't you ask your neighbors who literally have spaceships and are pretty much universally bound by their religion to be good to help you figure something out instead of invading another world through a portal powered by friggin' souls.

This is among the dumbest threads I've read in a while. How short sighted and naive can people be?

That said, the footage wasn't particularly exciting from a narrative standpoint and I understand now why they didn't want to release it as anything but a sneak preview demo reel at Comic Con. Will wait for an actual edited trailer.

Because you can always make things look better?

What? We talking about World of Warcraft here?

It has a chance to fill the high fantasy slot left mostly empty since LOTR trilogy and please tens of millions of blizzard/Warcraft fans. If it turns out good, its gonna smack the shit out of the box office.

If its as much fun as Final Fantasy Mega spirits or whatever, yeah, its gonna flop hard and doom video game movies for years more.

Draenei didn't had spaceships yet IIRC

You mean the race that was made up so they could sell a WOW expansion?

The problem of the Final Fantasy movie is that it was anything but Final Fantasy.

Maybe they go through the portal and land in modern day New York and then they will find out what it really means... to be an American.
