Anyone interested in these?:

Seems like they could be a real game changer, especially for someone like me who has avoided the hobby due to painting. I've been watching a bunch of previews on these and they seem amazing....outclassing the Citadel contrast paints. I'm thinking about buying some when they come out and finally get into 40k.

Interesting. I use rattlecans to base my dudes, and it saves a lot of time. I stopped relying on washing the entire model or using contrast paints though, so whatever time I saved then gets spent on precision washing.

I'll check out the Speedpaints, but I doubt they'll have the color I generally use.

They look like citadel's contrast paint which I used for a warcry terrain set for the wood because there was just too much of it and on skeletons. It looked great

Oh. You're one of those marines.

Oh look. I've accidentally dropped the Codex Astartes in some mud. It's all filthy now. Might even be some dog poo on it. Oh no.
Haha no, I just watched some lores videos on the Ultramarines today. Some of that stuff is wacked lol

Just ordered a set of paints and some tools to get me started on this hobby. Can't wait to try my hand at this, kinda excited tbh.

Thing is I'll start painting some miniatures I already have from other boardgames, Zombiecide and Imperial Assault and, once I'm convinced I don't suck at this and think I've learned enough, I'll get my first WH:40K set.

Been looking at them and the problem is that most of them look cool as fuck, so I'm having a hard time deciding what I'll get. The space marines look nice, but so do the bolter bitches and the mechanicus dudes.

Just finished painting my very first miniature, a stormtrooper from the game Imperial Assault.

IMG-20211220-235850.jpg

(gloss still drying here)

Kinda shitty results but hey, still better than I was expecting and I also had a lot of fun.

It was harder than expected too. The miniature is kinda small and reaching those gaps between the armor pieces was a pain.

I followed this tutorial. I think I messed up the most when painting the white above the nuln oil to accentuate that color, since I painted over those details with a bit of white here and there.

But yeah, as I said lots of fun. Tomorrow I'll try painting another one.

Very good for your first mini, i almost got done picking all pains and tools needed. I picked a box of khorne berzerers, primaris intercessors and the kill team octarius box. I will paint the orks from that box first, a few people i know play some kill team games at my LGS, doubt i'll be able to play anytime soon though, lots of new covid restrictions yet again, so painting will get most of my time from now on

I just bought the Death Guard Battleforce box, looking forward to assembling my first army.

I'm gonna practice painting my Gloomhaven models first, and maybe a few other minis I have before painting my Death Guard. I primed my Gloomhaven models last night - zenithal highlight with chaos black and wraith bone. Looks cooler already.

Little tip: if getting between the armor plates is hard, start with that color. Hit the entire mini with the color (black or dark grey, judging by your pic). Use a spray can or thinned paint (so it's wet and runs into the cracks). Once that's dry, do the plates (which should be easy since they are all raised).

It looks like you painted on a top layer of white a little thick (thin your paints a bit), and sometimes overshot a bit onto the spaces between the armor plates (use a smaller brush for detailing/highlights, and practice to get a steady hand).

I haven't painted storm troopers yet, but I'd base grey, paint in the black sections liberally, then do the white plates, nuln the lot, drybrush white. White is always going to be a punishing color, so practice practice practice. I bet a squad of those dudes is going to look aces on the battlefield!

I just bought the Death Guard Battleforce box, looking forward to assembling my first army.

Same. My first Death Guard. Got em primed and based. Need to purchase some zombies and HQ. The recommended HQ guymandude isn't being sold currently :(

Thanks for all the advice man! For the next one I'll try drybrushing after the nuln oil instead of painting those white details by myself, might look better that way!

I thought the stormtrooper might be an easy pick for my first mini, but all those little details and cracks are being kinda hard to paint. I'll keep practicing tho, still got 7 of those to paint. :)

The Battleforce box is assembled!

I kept the plague marines with their standard loadout except for giving one a blight launcher and another a sigil of decay. The icon bearer comes with an icon, of course. I heard plague marines aren't very good so I just decided to keep them cheap - I plan on buying another icon bearer so I have two squads of 5. The plague champion already has a power fist which is fine I guess.

The plagueburst crawler was the only model that gave me trouble as a beginner - the instructions for the tracks were wrong and.......stopped me dead in my tracks. I had to google how to build it. I just ordered a Lord of Virulence, and plan on going to my LGS to pick up a Tallyman, aforementioned icon bearer and a Foul Blightspawn.

So, advice!

Plan out your plague marine squads before assembly. There are a ton of options, but DG armies generally run squads with specific builds. I spent like, an hour reading up on compositions before glueing things. Apparently plague marine shooting is crap, but they aren't bad in melee especially with a flail.

Edit: the icon could be pretty annoying. I play against Plasmamancers a lot, and they do something similar. It's incredibly annoying getting mired in crap while you take mortals every round!

You stuck your deathshrouds to their bases: this makes it rough to paint the inside of their cloaks. I generally paint models with tough to reach spots before I stick em to their bases. Neither approach is wrong: some people don't paint the inside of the cloaks cause no-one sees that areas during normal play. I'm a bit more pedantic.

Same with the crawler: leave off the dozer blade to make the front bit easier to paint next time. Paint both bits, then stick it on.

A++ choices on the Tallyman and Foul Blightspawn. Almost every single list I found run both. I'm also getting some a bit later (gonna grab a patrol box too for Typhus as a Lord of Contagion proxy to warlord for me, and I want zooooombies).

Painting my first marines now. Will post some pics later.

Assembled a primaris intercessor, a Khorne berzerker and an ork kommando from kill team. Priming them tonight and the painting starts tomorrow.

I need to prime indoor, too cold outside, thinking of making a carton box and do this under the oven airflow, any advice?

Hot water bath for your spraypaint: it's when you run a sink full of warm water (not boiling, just heated up above room temp) and put the can in ahead of schedule. Don't submerge the nozzle bit at the top or blow up the can by shoving it in boiling water, obviously. About 5 to 10 minutes will heat up the can, then shake for at least 2 minutes, then spray. I live in a very windy area with a lot of rain, so I spray in my garage. It's not well ventilated, so I do a few models at a time before getting some proper air. Probably just need to wear a decent mask, I think.

If you do try the box thing: make sure to not force yourself to spray from too close a distance. Shake the can well, do a test spray against some cardboard, maintain the same distance from the figures throughout the priming (too near will result in a thick coat which hides details, too far will result in a grainy texture). I'd almost say do one model first to get the feel of the spray, then do the rest. I use a few brands and they all have slight nuances.

I did it under the kitchen hood fan, I setup a carton box that I cut then used a painting plastic cover for all sides and I didn't get any paint anywhere else and barely got any odor in the condo. It worked great, thanks for the advice.

I pinned my minis to cork but I guess my super glue is too cheap (I have citadel plastic glue but no good super glue) and they turn around on themselves on the cork so today I'll go pick a good super glue.

Excited to finally start painting today!

Done for tonight, I need to clean it and pass over with primary colors where I went off some places then off to highlights. My first space marine ever so far:

Damn fine job. My first marine did NOT look like that. Very clean, bet it's going to look great on the table!

Got my first batch of Death Guard done, minus the basing.

Dude I love that setup! Just please be careful with the paints so you don't end up splashing it over those screens.

Happened to me... Was applying some nuln oil to a mini without realizing I was dropping some drops over my mobile phone screen.

Oh and by the way, that's a cool looking space marine! :]

Thanks! I had a small space left in the condo so I did that setup for working from home and painting. I like it, it's small but cozy. I can listen to podcasts, watch videos and guides while I paint.

Hours flew by yesterday, and the best is that it takes no time to get setup and to replace everything once I'm done!

Haha that's cool! I started with the hobby just a few weeks ago, and would love to have a setup like yours since I'm currently painting on the living room. :goog_relieved:

And man do I get what you mean... Sometimes I look at the clock and can't believe I just spent 1 hour giving details to a figurine while it just felt like 10 or 15 minutes.

Well first space marine done. Not that happy with it but I'll keep practicing. I'll make my ork slasha from octarius kill team box next, there's no huge panels on orcs like on these guys

Trick for the lenses: the eyes are actually indentations, yeah? So wet your red paint, and dip a drop of it into the recess. Let it fill the space and you'll have an even red eye. Don't stress too much about your highlighting: it's the hardest part of painting. You'll get better and really, that pic shows that you're starting off strong.

Got my Plagueburst Crawler done over the weekend:

I need to practice layering. I have all colors needed to do orc skin from citadel but I get horrible results. I think i wasn't thinning my paints enough since I was getting a chalky paint and now it's better but I have no idea how they end up so bright without an horrible transition like I end up with.

I will try thinner coats and mix colors to get to the final pure color, is this the way to go?

So I'd go hyper light green (the shade you want...something like Moot, Skarsnik or Warpstone), hit that with a wash (here I can't help you: nuln would work, but there are green washes that might be better), then I'd do a heavy drybrush of the original green, then a light drybrush of a lighter green.

When you're painting flesh you always prime white or grey, and you paint with thin coats. You want the paint to almost be runny, as it'll run off the bulging muscles into the recesses and give you a neat shading effect. You'll have to keep applying thin coats (after a drying period each time) until you've built up the green you want.

In terms of mixing to get the green you want: that's a lot of trouble. Citadel has like, 8? shades of green. Vallejo and Army Painter have ones that Citadel don't, so there's even more to choose from. You can even dip into other brands that cater to realistic armies like Bolt Action. Point is, someone is making the green you want. Rather buy a pot than try and mix it yourself. You'll end up with consistency issues, and if you want to do more orcs later you'll have trouble getting the exact same mix again.

I am trying to use the citadel ork skin recipe which is waaagh! Flesh, then a Biel-tan green shade, warboss green then finally skarsnik. I can do dry brush decently, but I'm trying to learn layering it instead in thin coats, I really want to work on that technique but I'm doing something wrong I guess.

I did waaagh!, Shade, cleaned it with waaagh! besides recesses, then tried layering but I get too big of a contrast with the next color already to my taste and it was chalky. I think i didn't thin them enough so that's at least something I figured

I meant mixing waaagh with warboss 50/50, then warboss, then a mix of warboss and skarsnik 50/50 then finally skarsnik for final pure highlights.

Maybe going from one color to another is just too drastic?

So one the one hand I applaud you for attempting to learn a new technique, on the other I don't envy you. It's going to take some trial and error to get your process polished up. Stick with it, you can always strip the paint off the models later to repaint.

The chalky thing could potentially be a texture issue. When you primed and based, did you check the texture afterward each step? It sounds like you've created unwanted texture (which will show up HUGE when drybrushing a lighter color over it, as each grain will count as an edge). Maybe you created said texture when spraying your primer, or applying your base, and you're only now seeing it after the drybrushing.

You create unwanted texture when you use a rough file for removing mold lines, spraypaint in the wrong conditions, spray from too far away, use old paint or paint with unthinned paint.

It doesn't happen when I dry brush, just when I tried layering. It doesn't seem to happen now that I thin my paint with a mix of water and matte medium that I got the recipe from midwinter minis, I guess I was thinning them wrong

Yeah I really want to work and get good at layering, it intrigues me. I guess I'm more drawn to the eavy metal style I suppose

I made a thread but I'll post it here as well, since this is the minis artists hideout :)

I can get my hands on a paasche d3000r compressor with a tg-3f airbrush, including thinners, primers, some Vallejo and Tamiya paints, cleaning pot and some tools for 300$ Canadian. The guy barely used it, he bought it for car models but gave up

Is this a decent starting set? I've never touched an airbrush so far. But I'm thinking I'd like to use this to prime and base color my minis

What do you think? Good move?

Was actually thinking of getting into the wargaming hobby. I need a long (probably forever) break from gaming and need a new hobby.

Like the look of 40K (especially the Tau, who I understand are getting a new Codex and models soon), but also like the look of historical wargaming from Warlord games (Napoleonic and WW2).

Any tips for a pure wargaming virgin?

Tau codex is a week or two away, and then the internet will flood with videos and articles on how to start a Tau army. They've got a sweet Start Collecting box, and the new Patrol Box ain't bad for expanding. Both contain models at a discount, and are a fine place to start.
