Wasteland 2: Director's Cut |OT| Post-Apocalyptic, Post-Release Remix

The UI, camera and such took me a while to get used to, but I'm quite enjoying the game so far. I've been actually fighting a lot more than I've been talking but it's not all bad, the combat system is a bit better than I was expecting.

I'm gonna start today. Any tips? I think I read to make sure to spread my unique traits out across my team as opposed to making one strong character, right?

Playing on PC with the 360 controller. I think it controls fine, on par with XCom on a controller.

That said, I really wish there was a way to disable the "resize log window" option when R3ing between follow and pan. I never need to resize the damn log, but I need to click through it every time I switch camera modes.

I also wish when in pan mode it wouldn't constantly pan back to my character when I moved. There is a "follow squad with camera" option in the menu, but for some reason it's greyed out.

I have these same issues. That log window won't stay locked! Also, you can move and rotate HUD elements by clicking on the lock icon on the radio, but I can't figure out how to resize individual elements. Another plus on PC, all of the custom portraits for vanilla game work here too. Pretty rad.

This hasn't been difficult for me at all, but I've been playing a lot of the Long War XCOM mod.

Love this so far.

We need a montage! The day will be over before we know it then...
I just wished I had a house to fix up and paint-

yes- and make sure you diversify the weapon loadouts- you dont want everyone cannabalizing assault rifle ammo-

It's actually pretty hard to make one 'optimal' character with how limited your initial points are. But yes, stick with one (maybe two) weapon skills for each character (try not to overlap), and make sure to pick up the some variety of lockpick/alarm/safecrack skills. A medic is also crucial, but can be mitigated somewhat depending on a couple of decisions you make once the game starts.

In terms of attributes, barring changes down the line, luck is a dump stat, and the more skills you get (with higher Int) the better. Also, don't try to make a hybrid ranged/melee character, you won't have enough attributes at the start.

If need be, as you start levelling up, with the attribute points you get every 10 levels, you can start hybridizing, or pick up a 2nd ranged weapon class.

How are the controls on console? Debating on whether i want it on console or to just get in on Steam

I've played through the vanilla version on PC before and I decided to try playing this version with a controller. I haven't played much yet, but there is no doubt that playing with a mouse and keyboard is superior. A controller is ok, but it's a bit finicky when you want to examine stuff that are close together. Some functions and shortcuts are missing too when you play with a controller.

Personally, I'm going to wait for the steam controller before playing more. That should work well with this game.

The thing I'm worried about is to discover later in the game that I've put wrong skills/attribute and have to start over

Happened to me 30h into the game. Welcome to the beautiful world of cRPGs. But I didn't start over. Just adapted.

One tip: Assault rifles are king. it's not even funny how much stronger they were compared to all the other weapons. I really hope the DC fixed that terrible balancing.

So, my party would look like this:

Sierra - Handguns Are a Girl's Best Friend (Leader type)
Coordination: 4
Luck: 1
Awareness: 3
Strenght: 4
Speed: 4
Intelligence: 8
Charisma: 4

Computer Science: 2
Leadership: 1
Perception: 2
Smart ass: 1

Milda - Likes to cut things (Tank type)
Coordination: 2
Luck: 1
Awareness: 2
Strenght: 8
Speed: 8
Intelligence: 4
Charisma: 3

Blades weapons: 3
Blunt weapons: 1
Lockpicking: 1
Safecracking: 1

Dying Wolf - Well, "Sniper" and "Crying" were already taken, I may as well give him a name of impending doom (Sniper type)
Coordination: 8
Luck: 1
Awareness: 4
Strenght: 3
Speed: 5
Intelligence: 4
Charisma: 3

Field Medic: 1
Mechanical Repair: 1
Sniper Rifle: 2
Weaponsmithing: 2

Minwu - I was born to patch you (Medic type)
Coordination: 4
Luck: 1
Awareness: 6
Strenght: 3
Speed: 3
Intelligence: 8
Charisma: 3

Assault Rifles: 1
Demolitions: 1
Field Medic: 2
Surgeon: 2

Sounds good? Every character has at least 4 in Intelligence since it gives +1 Skill point per level, and I guess it would be a bad idea to forgo such an important bonus which will add up. I didn't want to lower Charisma, since I want to recruit NPCs. Luck really does seem to be a dump stat, so 1 for everyone.
Sierra has the lowest Combat initiative (10), and Minwu has the highest (12).
Minwu has 8 Action points, Sierra and Milda 9, Dying 10.

I plan to give Energy Weapons to Sierra later.

I'm finding energy/plasma weapons suck so far. My guy I let have plasma weapons even when he hits does barely any damage at all. Are they one of those that aren't very good at the start but get pretty good later?

I only played briefly, but am I missing where you see how much health an enemy has and how much damage your attack wiil do? I only noticed the hit percentage.

Nice job! Looks like you're ready for the Wasteland.

Going off Twitter there was apparently an issue with the disk copies of WL2 on XB1 from getting the update that included the bigger text option. Fixed now - update just started on my console.

... Oh crap. I'd completly forgotten that there was a freakin' goat at the beginning. It even goes "BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH".

I'm only a few hours in so I might start again with smarter stats/skills.

New people who didn't play the vanilla version:

- You get a really early recruit who's stupidly badass compared to your normal characters. Make sure she has ammo. Rely on her in combat until your other characters are much better.
- Do. Not. Skimp. On. Your. Main. Weapon. Skill.
- Whoever has Demolitions will level faster than everyone else. Factor this into your party creation.
- The conversation skills are cute, but can safely be skipped. Yeah, it sucks, but they get used very rarely and the difference they make isn't reliable.
- Create a medic. You shouldn't need one often, but when you do there is no substitute.
- Luck and Charisma are dump stats.
- Leadership is only worth something if you're party stays clumped up. Not worth it in most battle, imo. Those stat points you put into Charisma can be better used elsewhere.
- 13 initiative is the magic number. The majority of your starting party should have at least 13 initiative, or else life is going to be stupid hard.

Precision strike is pretty broken lol. Just cleared out the cave of honey badgers by shooting out all their legs. If you manage to cripple them (as opposed to just damaging) they don't seem to be able to get out of it and just become sitting targets. I was underleveled as hell since i got a level 14 follower afterwards and my party's only around level 10. Also, if you knock out an enemy's hands it's a pretty huge aim penalty, like -35%.

Game is damn fun so far, though. I backed it but didn't touch it until now since I kept getting emails about a new gigantic patch every month, then of course they do a huge overhaul. It's still pretty rough around the edges but I really enjoy this type of game. It plays a lot like Avernum, which I picked up in some random indie bundle only recently and enjoyed the hell out of. I hear Divinity: Original Sin plays similarly too, so I definitely need to play that since I've kind of ignored it.

Why charisma is dump? Can't you use it to avoid combat etc?

I made this team, but I don't know if it's ok:

(Sniper)

Coordination 6
Luck 2
Awareness 7
Strenght 3
Speed 3
Intelligence 4
Charisma 3

(Assault rifle)
Coordination 5
Luck 2
Awareness 3
Strenght 2
Speed 5
Intelligence 8
Charisma 3

(Melee)
Coordination 2
Luck 2
Awareness 3
Strenght 6
Speed 6
Intelligence 4
Charisma 5

(heavy weapons)
Coordination 6
Luck 2
Awareness 4
Strenght 3
Speed 5
Intelligence 4
Charisma 4

And basically everyone has some skill (different from eachother) with 1 point in it. The sniper has computer, mechanical repair, toaster repair. The assault rifle one is the medic, The melee is demolition + social and the last one everything relating to picklocking and stuff

The +5% exp boost per CHA point is no joke. Make a 10 INT 6 CHA sniper and you'll have most of your non-combat utility taken care of.

Game has infinite xp via random encounters, plus you'll be stupidly overleveled anyway by just doing everything you can.

Also, you recommended a sniper. Unless they've drastically overhauled the ap to damage ratio of sniper rifles, you're still better off with an AR (burst fire becomes obscene once you're got a good hit % going).

No, you can't use Charisma for that. You use the conversation skills for that, and very infrequently. You will get infinitely more use out of Outdoorsman (option to skip random encounters).

I'd prefer not to grind random encounters, I try to run from them every time lol.

Sniper just to stay away from the fight and with precision strikes she still adds a lot to combat. Pistol is also pretty effective with low ap precision strikes and finishing things off. My shotgun medic is underwhelming but he's extremely overdue for a new weapon, I think he's still got the starting one. Rifler definitely deals the most damage but he's completely combat focused. I like a mixed bag of rangers.

They've said that they rebalanced the weapons. Did they nerf burst fire maybe, cause my first burst fire rifle (FAMAS) is just a 2 shot burst for 6 ap instead of 4. Useless when I've only got 8 ap.

Heh.. I've got Bruce Banner on my team.. He soaked up so much radiation he's got a STR boost in human form.. Gave him tattered clothes, glasses, purplish pants. Very smart but a brawler since I needed one of those in my team.

I'm finding energy/plasma weapons suck so far. My guy I let have plasma weapons even when he hits does barely any damage at all. Are they one of those that aren't very good at the start but get pretty good later?

What I understood is that those weapons are useful against armored enemies.

Asshole is the best trait. Basically means you have to put one point in hardass and can ignore all the other convo skills. Limits you a bit but saves you tons of skill points.

Brittle Bones is great for a sniper too.

I keep searching for a detailed changelist, but haven't found one. The FAMAS is pretty crap tho, you can skip it and wait till you have access to the main gunseller in the HQ. Now he sells some absolutely badass gear.

I know I'm still not far in the game. Finally saved AG and exploring the wasted highpool area. But any tips for the lizards? They are fast and bullet sinks and usually plenty of them at once. Hard enough when there is three but now trying to get past a group of four.

I usually animal whisper half of them and the rest go down in a couple of turns of shooting. They are a quite the bullet sponges though.

Well, I restarted the game for the third time and finally took the time to create all of my rangers. Kind of stupid, but I now feel more invested in the game. I am still struggling big time in fights but I am getting there. I dropped the energy weapons for the assault riffle. Much more fun but I need more ammunitions!!!

thats not stupid it is how CRPGs work, since they are actual role playing games, causing you to role play, and get invested.
Dont tell the others..

Somebody will eventually take on a full blown max Luck/Charisma/(Int) build and the results they will somehow fight the game tooth and nail for will be spectacular as is good and proper for going all in on the classic dump stats. There must be some obscene combo of quirks and perks possible if you commit against all sense and reason so long as you don't go entirely nuts in some other way on the other party members...

That or the game's internal means will get cast aside as somebody ascends a full unarmed brawler party loaded up with animal companions like some bizarre alternate take on Fist of the North Star.

Charisma isn't a dump stat, it's how you recruit a lot of the companions in the game. It's something that can be nuked for probably 2nd run players that know the specific companions they want but I wouldn't skimp on it first run.

I'm getting the hang of this game, but then again I'm only playing on seasoned difficulty. I'm glad I read the early tips posted in this thread, or else I won't have a diverse squad as I have right now. You definitely need almost every skills across all of your squad in this game.

I've been running around in this central complex for hours. I hope I can relax a bit in a peaceful city or something like that shortly after this.

Anyway, will the NPCs that I've recruited along the way leave me later at some point?
Is the squad that I made at the start of the game going to be my main squad the whole game?
