Been on a small media blackout (more unintentional than anything) but seeing the stills makes me really happy.

Nite Owl is one of my favorite characters from Watchmen and seeing Patrick Wilson in these shots is great because he looks exactly like Dan Dreiberg.

He really does look great out of costume.

Besides his physique, I think it's his long boyish hair that annoys me the most. I can accept everything else about him, though.

i think it adds the the overall 'young' look he has. he should look older.. but after hearing him talk on the website, im pretty convinced he will be fine.. those clips sounded really really good.

The stills look incredible. Here's to hoping that the movie doesn't piss all over the original story too much...

it's exactly the same except for the ending.. though i am now hearing that the end might actually be the same and it was all a ruse.

Yeah, I've heard some rumors about this, too.

Waaait. Did they publicly mention there was a scientific accident that transformed a man in the comic book?

yeah. it might have been in one of the in between chapters.. not sure what you call them.. i remember the specific line. "superman is real, and he is american"

Doesn't really matter to us, but do you guys think WB got butthurt by Fox in this deal? I guess the bigger deal is that Fox doesn't have distro rights and they're losing rights to the franchise which made me think that they won't get the juicy DVD+BD cuts.

Yeah, I've heard some rumors about this, too.

there is a still from one of the trailers that looks like a giant fucking squid. I was thinking that they might be saving that for the extended cut where they add in the comic, etc though

Which trailer? I wanna take a closer look if you can point me to it, or if you can post the still.

I don't think it's there. It seems like a rumor that people think is true, despite the famed "still" never being posted. If that kind of thing was real, you would know about it by now.

I'm just now reading Watchmen for the first time (I'm up to chapter VII), and I must say, it is incredible. The characterization is excellent, it really does deserve to be called a novel. The tightly interwoven storylines within each chapter are gripping and impeccably written. I'm on an almost-blackout for the movie... but from the one trailer I have seen (and read in this thread), it looks to be shaping up quite nicely.

Fox just gets dibs on any future sequels or spinoffs, which shouldn't even happen to begin with. I believe I read where Warner Bros. gets all proceeds from domestic DVD/BR sales.

Movie Fails, not scientifically accurate. Looked like it was going to have a nice run, but don't see how they can recover from this.

A lot of people are getting pretty fired up about the Watchmen movie coming out any year now. This movie is based on the epic superhero graphic novel (comic book series to you) by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. I read it, and it’s pretty good. I had some problems with the ending, but I’ll save my comments for when the movie comes out.

Anyway, a new image was just released by the producers of the movie, and it shows a picture of Neil Armstrong on the Moon… taken by Dr. Manhattan, an ex-human who, through an atomic accident, became a glowing blue being of pure energy:

Pretty cool, eh? Yeah, but the debunker in me just has to point something out…

See the out-of-focus Earth on the left side of the picture? From the Moon, the Earth is about 2 degrees across, roughly four times the size of the Moon as seen from Earth. In the picture you can see the Earth is only a degree or two off the lunar horizon.

But that’s wrong! The Moon always shows one face as seen from the Earth, and that means the Earth is always in roughly the same part of the sky from a spot on the Moon. To see the Earth that close to the horizon means the Apollo 11 landing would have to have been very close to the Moon’s north or south pole (hard to tell which; the features on the Earth are too blurred to get a direction).

However, Apollo 11 landed almost exactly on the Moon’s Equator. To Buzz and Neil, the Earth was high overhead, difficult to see at all from inside the spacesuits.

Obviously, the Watchmen picture is faked.

[Update: Max Fagin in the comments makes a good point: there is a circle around the Moon where the Earth would be near the horizon, the divider between the near and far side of the Moon. But landing near there would be dangerous; for your first landing you want to be sure you are in direct visual contact with Earth, otherwise you can’t communicate. That means landing near the center of the Moon’s face. Assuming this was Apollo 17 (see below) changes that, but then why would Manhattan be there to take a picture of the 11th or 12th guy on the Moon? I don’t buy it.]

A nice touch is the code on the side of the picture: AS17-137-20990. That’s the coding NASA used for the pictures taken on the Moon. But… AS17 was used for Apollo 17, not 11. In fact, there is an Apollo picture taken with that code, and it’s a famous one, showing orange dust on the Moon. The orange color is from tiny glass particles that are volcanic in origin (the story of them finding the orange dust is pretty cool, and you can read about it on the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal).

I don’t know if the movie guys put that particular number there on purpose or not, but they screwed up the code.

I’m sure if I analyzed the picture more I’d find more stuff, but my geekery does have limits. Of course, if someone wants to examine the geometry of Dr. Manhattan holding the camera waist-high and the resulting tilt and angles of the picture, be my guest. I’ll just wait for the movie and think it’s cool either way.

nevermind, it was a cloverfield picture that someone claimed was from the watchmen trailer

Howza![/QUOTE]

Both pre-ordered. Still waiting for Black Freighter to appear for pre-order.

The thing about questioning the scientific accuracy of Dr Manhattan taking pics of men on the moon is, in the comic, Dr. Manhattan's existence changed the entirety of human history from the day he appeared. Because of that, man easily could've landed anywhere they damn well pleased on the moon... he could've helped make a better suit, new alloys, or even just teleported the whole dang expedition.

He helped us win in Vietnam!

Finished reading it yesterday, so awesome.

Well why does Rorschach have a sort of 'bat voice'?

I think they did a good job casting too. That girl that plays Laurie is so hot.

Oh yeah, I picked this up recently but forgot to take some pics (got it about 2 weeks ago).

It's a really cool coffee table-style book that's filled with really great photos from Dave Gibbons' personal work and his notes on the making of the Watchmen graphic novel.

I feel like such a badass now for making my own quality Rorschach costume.

Exactly! The few Rorschachs I saw in the last Halloween thread were tons better than those. OMG :lol

Ironic that Ozy is actually the best looking one of the bunch here. Not saying much though :lol
