I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this but what book/graphic novel should I start with since I have no knowledge of watchmen?

probably the one called watchmen

I was just re-reading it the other day and I didn't realize that
Rorsache was the guy holding the sign at the beginning saying "The End Is Nigh" and the detective shudders as he walks by. Awesome :D

yeah that shit is all over the place
when Ror is watching his mail drop across from the dinner you see kids spray paint the two people holding each other right next to it. You can see the yet unmasked Rorsarch rummaging through it in a few panels, and in one the newsvendor says something along the lines of "Theres probably things going on that nobody notices beneath the surface"

Minutemen are still in.

Zack refers to the Crimebusters as Crimebusters, although it's been changed in the movie to 'Watchmen' to avoid too much confusion.

Not a big deal for me, personally.

Funny enough I actually prefer that way... IIRC not even once the word watchman appear on the book, so I got a bit confused at first.

Same here. I think this thread will serve nicely for people that see the movie on a whim. It has a lot of good discussion to sift through.

Maybe just changing the thread title then. I might make a Watchmen review thread, just to get all the reviews in one place/

the only endorsement that matters:

from Whil Wheaton's blog, "Spoiler Alert: WATCHMEN is fucking awesome"

I know a lot of people want to know about Watchmen, so I'll just cut to the chase right away: It's the best movie inspired by a graphic novel that I've ever seen. It could have gone wrong in a thousand different places, and it didn't. I've wanted to see this movie for twenty years, and it was entirely worth the wait. Hear me now, my fellow geeks: you have nothing to worry about. Watchmen is fucking awesome.

Someone on twitter said they went with someone that never read it and they loved it. So who knows?

Also I listened to /Film's videoblog: How Much Money Will Watchmen Make?

They kinda have no idea what it will make.

I'm going to say 65 million. What do you guys think?

$65 Million overall? You're kidding, right?

I'd say $200 Million domestically.

Anyone putting together and official Watchmen thread? I would love to, I have alot of time at work.

Also Six Watchmen Collectible Covers From EW

:lol Ozymandias looks TERRIBLE there.

As for the gross...I'd say it's a bit unpredictable at the moment. I have no idea how well it's tracking either. Personally I think the movie looks too out there for the regular moviegoers.

You don't notice that apparently random words are in bold type? Many times one or two per sentence?

That's the only version I've read and I had no idea the bolding wasn't supposed to be there. I was pretty confused at first, cause there didn't seem to be a reason to emphasize those words. :lol

Yeah I'm reading it for the 2nd time and I noticed that as well, blew my mind

-especially when he was at the funeral

One advantage to reading it a chapter at a time with a month wait inbetween was figuring out some of these details. I figured it out when only two issues were out, but I read them many times over.

I noticed it... when they fucking said so after his arrest, in one of the police reports.

It bugged at first, but I guess I just tuned it out after a while.

I thought all versions had bolding. The original certainly does.
So all that talk about how the version that I own is "inferior" was a lie all along? All versions have annoying bolding? You've owned the originals all these years, so I'm more inclined to believe you.

In the end though, it doesn't really matter. The bolding becomes a non-issue.

The original comics and TPBs do, and the Absolute Edition does, and the recent TPB I bought does.

Can't say it ever bothered me-- it's just a comics convention.

Bolding bothers me because they always bold words that shouldn't be bolded and I can't help but emphasize them in my mind as I read them.

But I got over it.

Temper your expectations, folks. Fan review over on the watchmencomicmovie.com forums.

Seems like a very level-headed guy. He goes into detail on what he loved, liked, and absolutely hated... so beware of spoilers:

Let's get this out of the way:

6.5/10

First off, the film felt extremely rushed, both in a good way and a bad way; many scenes were so abbreviated and so castrated that there was barely any point in even including them (except to placate fans). The film sometimes felt like a jerrybuilt collection of unconnected scenes; scenes that, in the GN, were interwoven and interconnected are instead disjointed and irrelevant to each other. On their own, many scenes were absolutely fantastic, but the pacing was garbled and occasionally confusing, even to somebody so familiar with the GN.

Dude sounds ridiculously picky. Taken with a huge grain of salt.

i.e. vague complaints of 'pacing' and 'feels rushed' means absolutely nothing concrete. It'd be like saying 'bad directing.'

He goes into a little more detail by answering people's questions all throughout the thread. It's worth a read.

Q: Did you feel the rushed pacing was a result of scenes being trimmed and cut for the shorter theatrical runtime or did you get the impression that those are simply the way they were shot? Hmm. To phrase that better: Do you think a Director's Cut would fix the pacing issues?

Scenes being trimmed, for the most part. By boiling down scenes into three or four lines of familiar dialogue, the emotion or purpose behind them is compromised. I believe that the director's cut CAN be a very good movie.

Reading that, the new ending actually sounds pretty good.
It's crazy, right? The section we were sweating the most might actually turn out to be one of the film's best assets.

The changes do sound intriguing, I wanna see how it turned out for myself though. The movie seems very divisive.

Im thinking I wont be watching any more scenes or be reading many reviews. For some reason, I feel it will spoil the movie for me.

I wonder how much the weekend gross will be. The alamo drafthouse here in austin sold out two days after having the tickets available.
