Waypoint shutting down, all staff laid off

In his writeup he said he was unsure if the game was going to "show him porn".
Just imagine the horror of accidentally having to look at some boobs

I used to listen to waypoint when they first started after kotakus collapse. By the time they hired Rob I was done. I like social commentary on my gaming pods but it became way too preachy.

And Patrick klepick... Dude, you were a regular American perv in college and got heat over those drawings and pictures that went online. Instead of moderating your behavior like an adult you became a little wuss and covered your eyes during a yakuza scene.

Obviously it wasn't going to turn into a porn or have nudity or I'd be on the rating label. You knew that and still acted like a performative bitch. Get outta here.

He'll be fine. Dudes been making bank for awhile and if he falls on hard times then he only has himself to blame.

Vice got big by being a site full of people who went to crazy places and did crazy things.
Yeah vice was fucking sick when the paper magazine was full of shit like 'im a photographer for cnn but decided to become friends with some gun traffickers and they won't print this story'
Just endless deep dives into the complexity of the world.
2005 - 2012 I think was it's best run. I'd say RIP but I've already mourned them.

I remember liking Patrick on the 1up show way back in the day, but he become the human embodiment of all that is wrong with gaming journalism.
Last time I heard of him was calling someone out for using "insane" in marketing materials as being insensitive to those with mental illness - and then someone dug up like 20 tweets of him using the word "insane!!" over the years.
This feels like karma to me.

Austin Walker described the website as "the Lisa Simpson of gaming" and I cringed and never clicked on anything they did anymore.

Man I can’t stop laughing at this. Lisa was the “enlightened” progressive one who nobody liked because she had no charisma or sense of humor to balance out her idealism. (Also the Lisa episodes were always the worst ones)

Nobody I know who grew up with The Simpsons would willingly describe themselves as the Lisa Simpson of anything. For that matter, The Simpsons is satire and every single character pokes fun of something. No matter who you are, there’s probably some Simpsons character who’s pretty “on the nose” at lampooning one of your excesses.

Guess it’s a sign of the times that people unironically see Lisa as someone to be emulated rather than an example of “how to ensure nobody wants to listen to you regardless of whether you’re right or wrong”

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Hopefully the effected folks are able to land on their feet quick.

Patrick's probably gonna find his way back to Kotaku.

As horrible as it is for people to be laid off and out of work, the longer goons like Patrick Klepeck can be kept away from writing about videogames the better.

I have no idea who this person is or have I ever heard of Waypoint, so I checked out their twitter. Some of the shit they've been tweeting and retweeting tells me I'm not going to miss Waypoint.

Every time I pass by Vice HQ, I'm surprised it's still there. They've put some good stuff out but they've also put out way more garbage in relation.

Yeah, that's how I feel about Vice as a whole as well. There's some legit interesting documentary stuff, but a lot of absolute trash. I just hope that if all of Vice goes down the crapper that Dark Side of the Ring finds a home.

This salary is still baffling to me.

My guy, you get paid 100k to write stories about videogames, how is this a sustainable business model?

Plenty of YouTubers are pulling in six figures for producing superficially comparable content (gaming news, criticism, and analysis) when you factor in ad revenue, sponsorships, and Patreon.

The difference is that they're providing actual value to their audience by discussing subjects they're actually knowledgeable and passionate about, rather than just powering on the culture wars resentment machine and hoping to harvest clicks.

Good riddance to a business model that made the world an uglier, nastier place.

I only knew what Waypoint was after Patrick joined. Patrick will land soon for sure but don’t know about the rest.

Stop. Like PK is absolutely annoying and performative, but that isn't relevant when someone with kids in a niche market they probably should've prepared for, gets the boot. Losing a job when you're older and taking care of a family aint a fun experience.

I'm sure his wife is a strong and independent woman who needs no man, so she can surely provide for her family herself.

Looking at Waypoint's Youtube channel with the number of subscribers (55k 😂) and videos that barely hits 5k views, its absolutely pathetic for what Kotaku calls "A Good Website About Video Games".

It also says a lot about Kotaku being out of touch with reality and in complete denial.

No one said you were.
A reminder that you did just that:

You told someone to stop talking about what the man did as part of his job for the company in question, with the reason being that he has kids. What is that if not trying to shift the focus onto him being a parent rather than the company's downfall as a whole?

Fine I'll notice you if only to say perhaps you want to distinguish between the "literal" and the "colloquial."

Just what the video gaming industry needed, let's just be glad we don't have The Velma/Brian Griffin of gaming.
