Were cigarette shaped candies a marketing ploy by cigarette companies?

GOAT tobacco candy:

"Candy cigarettes are a candy introduced in the early 20th century made out of chalky sugar, bubblegum or chocolate, wrapped in paper as to resemble cigarettes. Some products contain powdered sugar hidden in the wrapper, allowing the user to blow on the cigarette and produce "smoke" on the other end. Candy cigarettes' place on the market has long been controversial because many critics believe the candy desensitizes children, leading them to become smokers later in life."

No, candy companies found kids like to mimic some of the "cool" things adults enjoy. It's no different than Big League gum, candy dispensing toy slot machines, or this gem:

Growing up in the 80's, all the cool people in movies smoked, so we had our candy cigarettes, which was better than us smoking at age 6 and 7

Adults like candy too. So sure, it could have been a ploy to hook kids, but it also could have just been an idea to sell more in general.

They are illegal here. I think there recently was some controversy because the duty free shops at the airports had a designated shelf for "adult" candy that included these.

I don't think it was as much a ploy by the tobacco companies as smart marketing by the candy companies who knew kids wanted to "be cool" like the adults or older kids

The one we had here during Commie times looked almost exactly like unfiltered cigarettes. They were made out of a brown crumbly substance vaguely resembling chocolate, and the wrappers had the exact same colour of the cheap cancer sticks available at the time.

I remember the Spider-Man branded ones. My mom got pissed because a friend gave me one while playing in a McDonald's play place and she caught me with it when I came down.

I am going to assume that thing fires out candy.

In which case you put the gun in your mouth and pull the trigger....

Maybe, but it didn't fucking work because who the hell would go from candy to cigarettes and think 'Hm, these cigarettes taste better!'.

Now, getting people addicted to sugar... that's something else entirely.
