Were cigarette shaped candies a marketing ploy by cigarette companies?

Damn I want some candy sticks now, I liked the ones that came with a spider man tattoo (trying to get us hooked on tattoos??)

The ice cream man used to sell these when I was a kid. I have a vague memory of pretending to smoke with one, but the part in my mouth started dissolving and sticky shit got all over my fingers.

back in my day, they used to warn of buying lick and stick tattoos from the ice cream man because they supposedly had LSD in them.

That's cheap living if you've got an LSD habit, I guess

Ir could be a ploy, however, it would take a special sort of soft brained child to leap from candy smokes to actual smokes based on fact that as a child you enjoyed candy cigarettes.

I used to love those lol

But I have always hated cigarettes. Never tried one and never will.

Blunts all day though lol

I doubt any of them were financed by cigarette companies especially when I was a kid, but I'm sure they were happy to see them in the convenience stores. First, those candies were gross, but because smoking was just so damn cool, I still bought them. The best ones were the ones that blew sugar powder out of the end to make it look like you were smoking.

Once they were gone, we switched to basically doing the same with pixie sticks.

Early 80's and my parents would buy these all the time for me while being huge smokers themselves. They thought it was hilarious and so did I. Saying that, my lips have never touched a cigarette. The smell was always a huge detractor for me.

I remember these. My mom, an otherwise relaxed and meek woman, put her foot the fuck down over these. I honestly can't remember her having a similar reaction to anything else, until my first boyfriend (LOL).

Candy was awesome when I was a kid. Big League Chew to look like the pro baseball players, candy cigarettes, those wax bottles, atomic warheads.

I even loved the jerky that came in the chew cans, even though i just straight up ate it.

These are still on some store shelves here in the South. Bought a few packs for a friend who loves retro things earlier this year.

And now thanks to this thread I want some grape Big League Chew.

Real talk, I've never seen someone actually chew tobacco to this day. I didn't know Big League Chew was a rip of chew tobacco until I became an adult.

I do see people chewing, but I also didn't realize what this was until I was an adult. The candy/gum cigars and cigarettes were easy enough, but I thought the baseball branding was just that.

I thought the gum cigarettes with the paper on the outside that let you blow on them and see puffs of 'smoke' (corn starch) blow out the end were really cool. Fortunately, smoking smells disgusting so the real thing never appealed to me.

LOL I remember the pure sugar ones and the ones that were made out of gum with powdered sugar in the wrapping that made "smoke" come out when you blew on them Haa haa we used to buy them from the Ice Cream trucks that always drove around on the weekends. Good memories :) to be a kid in the 80's and a teen in the 90's was an awesome experience.

I think they were a ploy but didn't work on me. I've never smoked a cigarette in my life and cant stand the smell.
