What are the worst flags, aesthetically?

Heh, not the worst by far, but I wish to submit the German Coat of Arms. I mean, there's people in this very thread thinking our glorious country flag is dull. Well, chew on this for a change.

That tongue. ...and the facial expression. It's just... just... :lol

Has historical reasons for looking like it does, obviously. Heraldry and all that jazz.

Nonetheless, I still can't quite get over it. I always feel the need to draw in an x for the eye, etc.

Edit: Again, not knocking the eagle. I'm just amused by his facial expression. And the tongue. What is it with heraldic animals and tongues, anyway.

Maryland, USA

This is my favorite flag. True I grew up in Maryland and am probably brainwashed, but I think it looks great.

I thought everyone agreed this was the best looking flag of the states.

Might be the Best

Hey. You shall not defame the union of the House Calvert sigil and the House Crossland sigil.

Do you have something against quartering in heraldry because this is actually a nice flag.

Please, that's the best state flag in the union breh.

So when is MD GAF meetup occurring

Let's all just take a moment to marvel at the most badass flag on Earth, the flag of Zheleznogorsk, Russia:

That's bear standing in an atom and cracking open its nucleus.

These are the flags of the Dutch provinces:

Proud to say this one is mine (at least, I was born there):

I like the Zuid-Holland, Friesland and Drente flags as well. But the rest are awful imo.

Holy shit, that looks just like the Tomanian flag from The Great Dictator. That's messed up.

And that is Amsterdam's actual, official, current flag?

Yes, and the three XXX's are well known. The design stems from banners used since the 17th century.

And as for relating it to the Great Dictator, the XXX symbol was also featured in the resistance flag of Amsterdam during the second world war (which is also a badass flag; It reads heroic, determined, and kind-hearted).

I checked out the Triskelion link someone posted, and the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging flag leaves no doubt to their inspiration as a group.

They are a South African white supremacist group. Goebbels would sue if he could.

Aesthetically that's pretty nice. As is the Nazi style (their actions don't nullify the striking visual design of their clothes, symbols, etc), the Helghast in Killzone, etc. This is a thread about bad flags, not good flags used by bad people.

I lived in Ainsworth, NE for 7 years when I was in elementary school. I don't know if that flag is real, this is the first time I've ever seen it.

Edit: My 5 mins of googling make me doubt it's real. There is no info out there about it besides some tweets, reddit posts, this thread, a wordpress site, and some wikis with no source. I also never saw it when I lived there nor when I've been back to visit.

Pretty much all coats of arms run the risk of looking weird because of heraldric rules, especially if they're involving animals.

The coat of arms of Finland: a lion stabbing itself in the head and screaming:

Coat of arms of the Swedish province of Ångermanland: three doped out fish.

Sucks for them, the other provinces get stuff like griffins, crossbow bolts or, in the case of Småland, a red lion wielding a crossbow:

The flags of Haute-Normandie and Basse-Normandie have the stupidest-looking lion on them, and they're more funny side-by-side because they're the same flag with three lions instead of two on one:

Haute-Normandie:

Basse-Normandie:

Basse-Normandie uses the old flag of Normandie (they split in the 50s) and clearly the guys in Haute-Normandie shrugged and did the least amount of work they could.

Am I imagining things, or is that Småland lion, err, anatomically correct?

Wow, you're totally correct. I've never noticed that before. It's not just that lion either - all Swedish lions appear to be, as you put it, anatomically correct. It's apparently in the heraldic rules. Found an article from a few years back that the female soldiers of the Nordic Battle Group actually found the idea of having to wear an, ahem, excited lion on their sleeves a bit off-putting. So the Armed Forces castrated it.

The heraldric artist behind it wasn't pleased at all. This is a direct quote from the article, my translation: "The heraldic lion is a powerful and stately symbol with its genitals intact and I cannot abide an incised image. The department of defense are ignorant about heraldry. Historically, coats of arms with castrated lions were reserved for traitors to the state".

No ambiguity there. Or in typical neogaf fashion:

You kidding? It's awesome.
Eagle is like, "Check out these guns son. I lift."

This is by aesthetics. Leave current politics out of it.

A flag is an outward symbol of a place and its people, or a movement, or a peace of history. The history of flags goes back thousands of years.

Unfortunately, a lot of them are shit. Here are a few.

Irribarren, Venezuela

This one ain't half bad. Looks like something for a racing team. Would look great on a Forza livery.
