What, are you listening too? (May 2012)

Daughn Gibson's record has kept me sane these last few weeks, where I've been under a lot of pressure. There's something so relaxing yet engaging about many of the songs, even the more up-tempo ones. 100% recommended.

Been on a ska binge lately, which led me to this beast:

Holy fuck this is good. I like Reel Big Fish and the like but this is infinitely better.

It's actually a pretty dark album, but I'm super excited to see people listening to it...My favorite thus far.

Whirr - Pipe Dreams

I just stumbled across this band called Whirr and wanted to share. Their latest album is easily one of the best I've heard all year. I'll post some tracks, but I think the album is better listened to from beginning to end since it flows so well.

They've been frequently compared to MBV and Slowdive, though I suppose every band that dabbles in shoegaze inevitably draws those comparisons.

Yeah MBV is worlds apart from Slowdive who actually dabbled in sounds that could be described as IDM from time to time. Will check out though, maybe this could actually break me away from All Hell for a moment.

I read the lyrics on his Facebook and it's dark as hell, but when I'm focusing on work I only hear the music as a whole, and there's something about it that's just...perfect.

Thank you, this is really good.

Fucking amazing. French goth metal shoegaze never sounded this beautiful.

These guys amazingly still deliver. Their best album in years.

Great voice and music styles.

So I want to like the new Silversun Pickups album, but I just can't.

Don't get me wrong. It's definitely not BAD, but rather it's just BORING.

Didn't know Whirr had released an album, their EP was pretty nice 2 years ago. Now if only LSD and the Search for God would get around to release one...

Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out

Why do you want to like it so bad?...The band has always been a bit boring.

I only ever liked "Lazy Eye" and that's because my first time hearing it was playing it in Rock Band and it was super well programmed. Like the lights come up when the music comes up and it's not so hard that you can't keep up so it was just one of the best gameplay experiences ever.

Other than that, yeah, they're not the superest band.

Yes, I really like this album. They used to be called Whirl and have another album that is also very good. *NSFW Album cover warning*

I think a few/most of Whirr's members are also in Deafheaven, Which is Shoegaze + Black Metal. Also very good.

Been listening to Angels and Airwaves like a fiend. Something about the warm weather and the outerspacey-ness, just can't stop listening

This is all I've been listening to in the past month. I listened to Teen Dream for about two weeks straight until Bloom came out and then just listened to that. I have listened to some Daughn Gibson off and on in between, but 95% of the time, it's all Beach House.

Listen to Daughn Gibson more, it's a grower

I was just listening to more than half of that, good taste....And I've listened to all of those within the past month : )

Edit: Cloud Nothings is amazing live, catch them if you can

mewithoutyou - Ten Stories

Oh man. Probably their best album to date (No. 5). I imagine a lot of you haven't heard these guys and I can't emphatically endorse them anymore than this.

Ten Stories has been touted as the year's best circus trainwreck concept album featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore. All of that is true, but none of it is why this album is so special.

The concept is actually pretty amazing - it's ten stories from different animals on the train. There's a really illuminating interview with Paste about the inspiration for singer/lyricist Aaron Weiss in writing the album.

It's really hard to draw comparisons to them, so you guys just have to trust me and promise you'll check out a few songs. Their older stuff was a little bit heavier, and they used to get a lot of comparisons to Fugazi, but their sound has calmed down a bit recently.

February 1878 - Album opener
Fox's Dream of the Log Flume - Feat. Hayley Williams - If you like Paramore, you probably won't like this?
Nine Stories - My favorite track on the album.

http://soundcloud.com/mewithoutyou - a couple of the tracks from the new album with a full full-length from 2006 (Brother, Sister) available for streaming

Seriously, check em out dudes.

I've probably listened to it a good 10 to 15 times at this point, it's just very short. It almost feels like a longer EP than a good standard release. I was also disappointed to find that he didn't release the album on CD. I went to my local record store and it was a Record Day vinyl only.

Mass by Virtual Boy

Just found out about these guys. It's electronic music and I think it has a pretty awesome sound to it. It isn't dubstep.

This is phenomenal. I had kind of stopped caring about HEALTH as I didn't like their last album all that much, but I seriously think this is the best thing they've done yet. At the very least, it's their most eclectic collection of songs. As someone who has never been a huge video game music enthusiast, I'd have to say that this leaps right to the top of my list of favorite soundtracks. They really did an excellent job with this album.

"Max: Panama"
"Future"
"Tears"

Easily the coolest Zeppelin album. Really got into listening these records again.

Grimes - Visions
Saw this posted a lot in these threads lately and accidentally stumbled upon her music videos on youtube. I like it for my weird pop noise needs.

Also new Death Grips is nice in small doses (to avoid headaches).

Not sure about that Nike and the Dove. The album is sorta all over the place. I am pretty fond of that new Liars album though.

The new Edward Sharpe album is really.. not good. Just a total snooze that doesn't have a single standout track. The overwhelmingly positive reviews for it are garbage. I wasn't very impressed by the new Walkmen album either which lacks any sense of energy they've had in the past.

Just went through this whole thread, found a lot of good stuff. Notably Lusk, Niki and The Dove, Killer Mike, and James Blackshaw. Good stuff!
