What does Nintendo mean to you?

Nintendo was not my introduction to gaming, I had older brothers who owned an Atari 2600, but when they got the NES, it was a game changer for me, I wouldn't be a gamer without Nintendo, and even now if Nintendo had stopped making games, I wouldn't play many games at all. I identify myself as someone who enjoys Nintendo games, this isn't the only way that I identify myself, but it is a large part of who I am. I've been a PC gamer for the past 15 years as well (half my life) but I have trouble picturing myself as a PC gamer.

If someone says to me "You play games?" I instantly think of Nintendo IPs and all the enjoyment I've had with friends growing up, I remember the dreamcast and PS1 as well, but I grew up with Nintendo and despite what others may say, Nintendo has grown up with my generation.

As a company, nothing but a lot of raised eyebrows.

Their games, though, fill a niche of gameplay over story, high quality, and innovative ideas.

A corporation I loved up until maybe 2 years after Wii launched, and then I moved on.

1. Old school

2. Out of touch with teens and internet, who play online coop games

3. A bit greedy (game prices, region locking, you tube monetisation efforts, low tech in consoles ...etc etc)

4. Make some good games and weak consoles with 5 different controllers (lol)

5. Have a hardcore fanbase which is more 'pumped' than most life long football fans. Check any amiibo thread or the many GAF Nintendo is da best stuff. Or scroll up and down a bit.....

6. Don't exist much in UK (not in most shops / PAL top 40).

7. Wish they would come into the modern world.

8. Made my favourite racer (Wii excite truck believe it or not)

The Mario and Pokemon company that generally put out quality but non-risky safe titles, who are a generation behind in ideas (region lock, online system) and hardware.

Nintendo represents oldschool Japanese game design, something that is extinct on the AAA level. Indies get it right occasionally but it's not the same magic as when you play Castlevania, Chrono Trigger, Resident Evil, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Metal Gear Solid, Xenoblade.

The pinnacle of polish in the industry. Innovation. Local multiplayer focus. Tight controls. Gameplay always as a focus over pretty graphics. That said, their games still always look spectacular.

Nothing we didn't have great gaming crisis in Europe so noone cared when we had Amigas.

But I really hate their anti-consumer bussiness model they have adopted with Wii release

To me its an honest company (never screwed anyone over with f2p/dlc etc. BS) that cares for their fans and simply loves making games, and playing games. I love all of their characters, and their games are of such high quality: I buy them blindly and have yet to be dissapointed: no serious bugs/glitches and always a compelling experience if you are even remotely interested in the genre. However, as much as I like their games, I absolutely loathe their hardware since gamecube though, but in the end, I'm always there for the games.

Pretty much the same as they meant to me as a kid...which could be seen as either an advantage or a disadvantage. They still produce stellar games and the high quality of them has always been a primary focus of theirs. It's great for someone like me, who grew up with them, to still appeal to me. But I suppose that could also seen as one of their major issues, that they tend to double down on their older audience and appeal to nostalgic sentiments. I can also understand why others would think they're a bit archaic because they do make frustrating decisions.

Nonetheless, they've always been a consistent presence in the industry and they're clearly one of the titans of gaming, no matter what you think of them. They're just a corporation that produces memorable experiences and their games are just fun. What more could I really want?

Impeccable game quality and polish.

If you're really doing a write up though you should mention the fact that their base has shrunk 15 million units or so every generation save for the Wii. It's never increased and the Wii U won't hit 15 million so it might be a problem.

It deserves to be discussed and researched.

3DS sold 50m hw units

Not much anymore. In one word I'd say that Nintendo to me means past: their games were part of my childhood and their games today still have a connection to the past in one way or another. So "past" is the key word and for this reason I still like them, after all.
For the same reason, though, they do not surprise me anymore most of the time.

For me Nintendo represents a commitment to the fundamentals of the video game as the world's most clever toy and a conscious refusal to give up on the open and accepting perspective of childhood.

For all their other aspects can be frustrating, such as the poor management of NOA, the core of Nintendo stays the same.

A company that puts games first which is rare in 2015, very little corporate nonsense and a lot of emphasis on gameplay over the more skin deep elements of gaming like Graphics, celebrity voice actors & musicians etc.

They have and still do make the most fun games and used to make great hardware but mediocre hardware nowdays that feels cheapy and became massive dicks after the wii/ds and have no idea how online works.

Also has the most obnoxious defenders.

fun (often cutesy) games. rabid (often apologist) fanbase.

i recently bought a wii u so i don't mean this to sound overly negative.

I think they're the greatest videogames maker in the world, and they have been for the the 25 years I've been playing video games, and the one company that always keeps me interested in their future output, and in the medium as a whole.

Legendary video game company who builds their games around fun mechanics. Sometimes they make baffling business decisions but they're always putting out quality games no matter the platform.

Nintendo: A maddening company. One that leave piles and piles of money on the table to do things that no one asked for...sometimes to spectacular results but more frequently to a chorus of "huh, why?"

Today the strongest feeling it evokes is childhood and what it means to enjoy something simply for the fact that it's pure fun.

However, since the introduction of the Wii and everything after they have become nothing more than a past memory of a better time.

I hope you cover all the shady shit they've pulled through the years. I get that it's easier to forgive them since they make incredible games, but as a company, I don't really like them.
