what excites you about remakes?

If I never played the original, I get more excited than if I have played the original.
Wind Walker excites me a lot.
But The Duck Tales trailer made me giggle like a baby, so I guess sometimes an 'improved' version gives me joy. May change when I play it, much like the Bionic Commando remake which I didnt enjoy as much as the original.

If it's a multiplayer game, a revitalized community. Besides that, graphics, enhanced and tightened features. What I don't like is when they screw them up. Flashback looks like it's going to be a pretty bad remake to me, for example.

I like remakes on handhelds and mobile devices because I can play them on the go. Also, if the remake is of an 8-bit game, it is sometimes nice to get something with more modern graphics. Some remakes, like the Tactics Ogre remake on PSP fix some major balancing issues that the original game had, and introduce a different take on the gameplay.

I don't really bother with HD remakes to games I purchased already on the PS2.

nothing, I hate replaying games and they always end up looking worse than the original, minus some cases

nostalgia.

but I usually regret buying them again. Hate replaying games outside a few.

It's great for 'games you heard about, but never got around to play' though.

I rather have something i know i will like, than take the jump into something i might not like

Also REmake kinda set the standard for how to do remakes, it showed how you can take something already iconic and amazing and put a slight new spin on it and i wonder if any game will do it just as well as that game did it.

For me LttP "remake/sequel" whatever the hell it is, is a throwback to a era when i used to love Zelda more than anything else, it feels ive been waiting a whole lifetime for this.

They typically never live up to the original..

Also it hurts so bad when they remake a PC game and they make it waaaaaaayyy dumbed down than the original so that it will work with consoles and be more appealing to the mass market.

Sucks..

Honestly, it's the developer's fault if a remake doesn't excite you.

Games like OOT3D are more like re-masterings than true remakes. I can see why a lot people wouldn't really be interested if they've already played the game to death.

Resident Evil on the other hand showed the true potential of a high quality remake.

I really only get excited if it's a port to a handheld (Persona 3 & 4, FFX & X-2) or if it's a version of the game that was never originally released in the US (FFX & X-2 again, KH 1.5)

it amazes me how freaking fantastic REmake still looks. Wow.
I also loved the additions made, too (i.e. Lisa Trevor, Crimson Heads, defense items, new Neptune tank, etc.)

Truly wasted opportunity that Capcom never gave RE2 the same treatment. :/

Gives me a chance to play games I may have missed.

For example, I don't own a PS3 and hopefully The Last of Us makes a showing on the PS4.

Increasingly it's nice not to have to lug out numerous old consoles in order to play older games, so remakes can be nice for those.

but what about the backlog or any of the new stuff that is coming out?

would you prefer to play a remake over something new?

Oftentimes, yes. There are many old games that are difficult to play because of badly aged visuals or other glitches or issues in game mechanics that weren't a problem then, but with advances made in controls, camera positioning, etc. have made games more fluid and playable today.

Example -- a legitimate remake of the original N64 Perfect Dark would have me wetting my pants. That game was still fun back then, but imagine playing it with crisp visuals, voice chat with your friends, and all of the other social gaming features and re-vamped controls of today's more modern games.

Some people might say that it's "only cashing in on nostalgia" but nostalgia is a thing for a reason -- because those old games were good as shit.

+60 FPS
+1080p
+AA
+Better control options
+Extras that might have been spread across different releases

*New online multiplayer options(waiting for a Melee HD)

REmake went a step further back in the day if you ask me.

Taking a classic game that I love and enhancing the fuck out of it.

See: REmake and Zero Mission.

Unfortunately, most remakes don't get that kind of love.

Remakes used to excite me. I really enjoyed stuff like REmake, Sands of Time and Ninja Gaiden when they came out. Now though they usually come off as cheap cash ins and further homogenizes various series into the AAA melting pot.

I don't want Contra to be remade into a Call of Duty clone.

I don't want Pitfall to be remade into an Uncharted clone.

I don't want Dino Crisis to be a Gears of War clone.

Would I like remakes to those games? Sure, it's not like the last game in the series was so recent unlike some game series getting remakes in less than 5 years of the game it's trying to remake!

remakes can be great like the tomb raider one, but the whole HD upres bullshit still amazes me how people actually buy that stuff

Probably getting new players into the game. I really want that Majora's Mask remake/port to the 3DS, so people who skipped out on that game can finally experience the BEST Zelda game. :P

A lot of it is convenience for me. Instead of hooking up an old console when I get the itch to play one of my old favorites, I can just pop a disc into my 360 or PS3 and play. On top of that, I can chat with friends while playing and if we all want to play a game together, I'm only a game invite away.

This.
Remakes game be a great thing, if they add significant value to the original idea.

Nothing, really.

For me, games are about conquering new challenges and experiencing new events (story, characters, etc.). My gaming brain needs new stimuli and remakes don't deliver.

REmake is especially amazing because it plays off your nostalgia to fuck with you. Plus RE is pretty replayable to begin with so a remake is fine.

I'm interested in Wind Waker HD because I never finished the original. Gave up at the triforce hunt so I'm hoping they deal with that somehow. It's been so long since I played the game it might as well all be new to me anyhow.

What excites me about remakes/remasters?

Mostly the improved visuals (when done properly), and the improved performance (again, when done properly), and the chance of playing one of my favorite classics on newer hardware (meaning less reason to have to whip out the NES, SNES, or Genesis).

I remember when I played the God of War Collection, it was amazing, because it was like playing the game all over again for the first time. Ditto with Ico and SOTC HD.

If publishers want to make quality remakes/remasters of games I love, I'll buy them. If publishers want to make shit remakes/remasters, I'll ignore them (like the Silent Hill HD Collection).

That they do a very good improvement.
Just like one of the best remake since remakes started. Resident Evil 1

What excites me about remakes?

Being able to experience a game I love with a fresh coat of paint and new content.

Haven't you ever wished to forget everything about a game you love just to be able to experience it again like it was the first time? A remake is as close as you can get to that feeling.

If you mean titles like ICO and SOTC HD I wouldn't really class that as a remake - it's more like re-releasing a classic spruced up and cleaned up to get closer to their potential on modern equipment.

If the title is great then I'm normally pretty keen - to me it's like buying a Blu-Ray to replace a DVD or a DVD to replace a VHS tape.

Technically I'd say a remake would need to be something built from scratch based on an existing IP - such as the recent Tomb Raider release, which is essentially a remake/reboot.

In the case of the above my interest is normally actually much lower unless I hear very good things about the title. I tend to lean towards originals and am happy to invest in refreshed versions - for example I'd love an HD release of Grim Fandango (I'd buy that sucker in a moment).

to those that enjoy remakes:

how do you prioritize your time with them? do you play them during a new release dry spell or would you pick playing a remake over something new?

1. Better graphics

2. New content

These two are major contenders for me, as well as the ability to enjoy a game I never got to play. I was not around when Duck Tales was a popular game, it's thrilling for me to be able to get the same experience as everyone who loved and enjoyed it. I was also too young to really enjoy OoT when it came out, I owned an N64, but really only played Rare games and Mario. So I'd have to say the chance to go back and enjoy classics I've missed out on with a new coat of paint, a bit of polish, and possibly new features.
