What game series has the most consistent quality?

In this industry, franchises and sequels reign supreme. Unlike the film industry, game sequels have always generally been better than their preceding entries in a series. As a natural consequence of that, gamers usually show their support for a franchise throughout the years. That is, of course, as long as the quality remains consistent with each progressive release.

Now there are examples of series in which certain entries went wrong. We all know that DMC2 sucked so hard that the series has had to resort to two prequels in order to save face. Pretty much every Metal Gear has been subject to divided opinions since the first one. The Final Fantasy series (main entries) has unquestionably seen its share of ups and downs. And we've all seen what's happened to poor Sonic the Hedgehog.

Barring the exceptions, what game series do you feel has had the most consistent level of quality throughout its run?

My answer may seem obvious, but it's only an easy choice because of how truly consistent this series has always been. I'm talking, of course, about the Mario series.

The only games in the mainline series that have engendered any kind of debate as to their quality were SMB2 (US version) and Sunshine, and in my opinion both of those games were good. Otherwise, nearly every mainline Mario game has seen itself among countless Top 10 Lists. The original obviously marked a rebirth for the industry that we still play in today, SMB3 and SMW are both widely considered to be two of the best 2D platformers ever made to this day, Mario 64 set a standard for 3D platformers that was imitated yet unsurpassed for over a decade, and now Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 have done the impossible in arguably topping every entry in the series that came before it!

Over 25 years later, Miyamoto & Co. still have what it takes to craft some of the best games ever made.

What other series has been this great for 25+ years? Probably none, but don't let that stop you from posting some other series that have shown consistent quality throughout their existence.

Uncharted.

See, I think Uncharted 3 is going to be amazing, but I really think Uncharted had way too many problems to really cement the series as what the op is looking for.

Plus I dont think its fair to count 'series' of which contain only two released games.

Definitely the mainline Mario series. Not so sure about Metroid since I wasn't very fond of Metroid II or I, to be honest. I guess SSX was also pretty good from game to game. Oh, and Gran Turismo, even though I think it gets bogged down with every new release.

Mass Effect or Uncharted maybe Mwtal Gear Solid.

Actuallly Hitman has constant quality.

Hell no. Hitman 3: Contracts was garbage.

Joke? F3, New Vegas and Oblivion are 3 of the biggest bug ridden games this gen.

Every single Fallout game has been bug ridden.

A few of my picks:

I would also give Metroid an honourable mention

Yeah, I think you're missing the point of this thread.
I wouldn't necessarily say that. DKC1, DKC2, DKC3, and DKCR are all great games. I'd say four games constitutes a series, wouldn't you?

I can't think of a single series/franchise that has had a consistent quality to it. That includes the Mario games.

Naming "series" that only contain 2 games seems like a cheat, and outside of that I can't think of much.

Maybe Breath of Fire.
Elder scrolls works if you allow mods :P

Blasphemy. I'd stay away from hotels, Chinese restaurants, Russian bases in the arctic etc., now that you've stated your case. :P

I loved the brooding "best of" vignettes of Contracts. Some seriously refined gameplay.

I thought that one was great. Really fleshed out the 50% of levels that were remakes.

The game was full of bugs. I couldn't finish the 3rd level because it was so goddamn buggy. One time the target person was not here. Another time i killed the target and my log still said kill bla bla. I did that already stupid game! Or Codename: 47 fall through the ground etc... It was horrible.

imo Hitman 2 is still the best.

Mario
Zelda

Oh yeah and the Mana series...

...not. *cries*

For some reason, I was under the impression that BoF4 wasn't received well? Never got to play it.

Eek, really? I loved 4, it was Dragon Quarter that I thought was the black sheep. Some loved it though.

Blood Money is where its at.

Half-Life, I think, is a pretty good pick. Half-Life, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Half-Life 2, Episode 1, and Episode 2 are all games. Quality varies a bit, and Blue Shift is the weakest link, but all are polished and highly enjoyable. At their best they represent some of the best gaming in their genre.

The Total War series probably deserves some credit. They're often bug ridden and a bit clumsy, but I cant really think of any one of the Total War games or expansions that is significantly worse than another.

Nobody mentioned God of War yet??
I'd say that a good one. Sure, some people were slightly disappointed by the third game, but that's only because the story kind of fizzled out. The game, taken as a whole, was still really good. The second one's my favorite, but the whole trilogy (and even the PSP entries) is fantastic.

oh, if we're counting stuff like uncharted, then:

  • lolo series
  • kururin series
  • chrono series

that's apart from the obvious ones, e.g., mario, zelda, half-life.
