What game series has the most consistent quality?

Sorry to those that say Uncharted but that series had one high quality game and one sorta decent game.

MGS started out great, and then by the very next one, completely screwed everything up. That is a horrible example. MGS2 is one of the most WTF examples in gaming history.

I guess one series that has stayed consistent in high quality with each entry is Forza. Although I feel racing games are probably among the easiest genres to maintain a certain quality.

I'd normally agree with a :), but after 6 no smiles will be had.

My pick would be Ratchet and Clank. All of them are pretty great and even the "low points" in the series would still be one of my favorite games of that year.

GTA - 3, VC, SA and IV were of the highest quality these most recent generations.

Metal Gear is another that comes to mind, ignoring the original Xbox entry.
I usually would not be willing to give this one IV, and giving vice city stories I do not have to.

Series where the black sheep may be considered close enough to the rest of the games to qualify:
-Gran Turismo
-DOOM
-Numbered Final Fantasy (maybe not with XIII and XIV though?)
-Nintendo series

How about Dark Forces? It has been well regarded over four games and a few direction changes.

Series with less than 3 games out shouldn't even be considered "consistent", and we are talking about the "most" consistent too. What up with the Uncharted and Mass Effect posts?

You know I don't think Dead or Alive has been mentioned. For me, the series has been pretty incredibly consistent. I think they are all mostly good games, but I don't think each one eclipses the other and I can still play 3 even with Ultimate and 4 out there. Even Hardcore and 1 are pretty fun to me.

You can never go wrong with MGS.

But I will say the Monkey Island series has always delivered the laughs and puzzles.
Even if Escape is the weakest.

To be honest its pretty hard to pick, almost every long running series has had one or 2 truly disastrous games, or have highs and lows. Series like Metroid, Half Life, and Civilization are pretty close to being always top quality.

You have some exceptions in newer series like God of War and Advance Wars who have a good number of entries without a bad game, but they havent been around all that long yet. Theres a lot some older series like Thief that are incredible but only have a couple to show for it.
Try 1988 for the "Wars" series!

One NES game, one SNES, and three for gb/gbc, only in Japan. Not sure how good they were, but they sure look very similar.

Edit: Actually, many maps were even reused from the old Wars games in the Advance Wars games.

Famicom Wars
Super Famicom Wars
Gameboy Wars
Advance Wars
...Advance Wars Dual Strike, guess they broke the naming convention there.

Why not go with the whole Warriors franchise? :P

Here's hoping DW7 adds some well-needed variety. And that they stop using the expansion disk model for updated releases (SW3 is getting this).

The longest series not yet mentioned (I think) that comes to mind is the Ogre games. What would people say about this? I can't really proffer a definite opinion. The console entries are all consistently very good, but I haven't played the two portable titles.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Assassin's Creed yet, is the original game holding it back? 2 and Brotherhood are brilliant.

It's got some pretty awful handheld spinoffs.

Also it hasn't even been around for five years.

Mario

Metal Gear

Gran Turismo

Shin Megami Tensei (including spinoffs: Persona and DDS)

Zelda

Grand theft Auto

Ace Combat

I'm sure there are others too, but this is what comes to mind at the moment. You could never go wrong with these games imo. Yes, some people might bitch about this or that, but overall, each main entry in these franchises has been consistently good.

Gabriel Knight series?
Even though GK3 has its share of problems (like the infamous moustache puzzle), it's still a great adventure game.

Also lol at the Other M hatred. The game was still generally well received critically, and was a high quality game and bold experiment, even if not to everyone's tastes (including mine).
:D
