Subpar compared to what? Its sure as hell more fun than any of the Ratchet and Clank games, or Jak and Dexter. The Kameo hate is still totally confusing. I think some people went in looking for flaws that arent really there.
Perhaps, but not me. I bought an X360 and ONLY PDZ and Kameo thinking/hoping/wishing that it represented a return of Rare's fantastic form from the mid-late N64 era. I was wrong.
Platforming - not much of it, and pales in comparison to Super Mario Sunshine, the Rayman games, etc.
Exploration - Crap compared to Zelda, Mario, and plenty of other 3rd person action games. Weak, mostly linear locations, characters that move too slow don't help. Very little reward to the exploration. Oh look, another box with coins in it. Another elemental fruit. (I maxed out my coins with 999 about 8 game-hours ago, and wound up finding WAY more fruit than I ever needed to max out all of my guys, before I even had 'em).
Camera - Fine while moving (if a bit too zoomed in by default), but it totally breaks down in combat, particularly when there are multiple targets and/or closed quarters and/or you're using a character that auto locks onto enemies, such as Pummel Weed.
Controls - Most characters move too slow, and none are particularly responsive. Some characters, such as Kameo, are way too floaty as well. In general a very poor and unsatisfying sense of physics. Whoever had the bright idea of mapping the primary combat actions to various combinations of shoulder trigger pulls and holds should be shot. Repeatedly. It's slow, clunky, unresponsive, and needlessly contrived. There's some satisfaction to be had with these controls when using Pummel Weed's boxing skills, but the controls are crap for most other characters. Face buttons used to switch skins? What a fucking waste.
Puzzles - Almost none to speak of. Though there's just enough there to tease and taunt you into wanting more. Hell, less even than Starfox Adventures, and that game SUCKED too.
IMHO, of course.
