What genre should Naughty Dog tackle next?

90's cops. Co-op action game. Point Break/Bad Boys.

Seems like Rockstar's wheelhouse to me

Assuming they're going to make more stuff like The Last of Us.. have no more zombie apocalypses or supernatural monsters. They are the dumbest and least original aspect of every PS3 Naughty Dog game. It panders to an audience more than anything.

Just give us realistic, tense, violent drama. We can have a touching father/surrogate daughter story without setting it in a cringe post-apocalyptic movie setting.

They've been doing corridor third person shooters for the past 9 years. The OP makes it seem like they've tackled more than ONE genre since the PS3 launch and that's not actually the case. Corridor 3rd person shooters for the entire last gen and they've started this gen with another corridor 3rd person shooter.

I guess I'm that one gamer that doesn't understand the love this developer has from the PS3 days. Crash Bandicoot was their glory days for me. Uncharted and TLOU does nothing for me. I've tried. I really have.

Football coaching sim.

That just made me think how could a developer handle a sports drama game. Basically cinematic cutscenes and normal gameplay while not playing the sport, but then you would actually play the games (i.e. football would be like Madden (or FIFA if you live outside of the US), baseball would play like MLB: The Show, etc.) That would be interesting!

Do sci-fi/space adventure and use the Metroid universe.
Do high fantasy and use the Zelda universe.

Can you even imagine? Holy crap. Please based Nintendo/Sony.

Text adventure.

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here. To your left are like a million angry pirates.

I'd love to see them do something with an ensemble cast and more than 2 protagonists. TLOU was their half step to a two protagonist game, so I wonder if they can pull off a game based on an ensemble.

Full blown mascot platformer with bleeding edge aesthetics and presentation on PS4. Technology has changed so much since they last did them, that it'd practically be a new genre for them.

I would like to see a science fiction game from them. Like... not just Uncharted in space, or Last of Us in space or something, but I would like to see them tackle some more alien environments or some cool spaceships.

Despite not being from Naughty Dog, we'll basically get that with The Order: 1886.

I was thinking without any supernatural elements. Something like Assassin's Creed without the Animus/first civilization. But could be the American Civil War, a western, ancient Egypt, etc.

They should tackle whatever the fuck they want to tackle. They could make a cooking rhythm game and I'd be in day one.

An open world game or FPS would be neat to see, especially with all the little details that they stick everywhere in their games.

Speaking of details, when I was exploring the homes during the
Suburbs of Pittsburgh
section of TLOU, I so deeply wanted to have the interiors of EVERY home that detailed in GTA.

not really a genre game wise, but a game with a british gangland setting ala Lock Stock or Snatch, probably a tps action game again. The beggining to UC3 was proof enugh to me that they could pull it off.

I don't think making a platformer interests them. They've spent too much on their mo-cap technology over the years. I think for the time being, they will only be making cinematic style games. Of course, like all things, they will go out of style and Naughty Dog will need to adapt. Despite all the cinematic games that are out there or are being made, I honestly think we are still in its infancy and Naughty Dog is leading the way.

To undertake a different gaming genre might also require a large power shift in the company as it seems the major players in ND are very content to keep making character/story driven action adventure games.

But back to the original topic regarding ND doing a different thematic genre, I would actually like a scifi or cyberpunk game from them but please, I don't need another lore where there's some all powerful mystical ancient race that threatens the galaxy.

Give us Savage Starlight

One and done.

You're going to get Uncharted and TLOU sequels.

I think after Uncharted 4 they will go for a new IP.

edit: I'm fine with the game style they do. I like the cinematic story/character driven games. I loved all 3 Uncharted games (and the GA on Vita) and I really loved Last of Us. If they keep on doing what they're doing, great. I just hope we get a new setting / new IP / w/e.
