The only thing I saw was a PHP error that it couldn't connect to some memcache server.

I run PHP at work and when this happens, PHP doesn't know what to do, because I believe the processes have to restart to re-establish persistent connections. Obviously whatever happened with GAF was more complicated as it looked like it was a decently long outage.

The problem was a web server going drunk and the load balancer not removing it from the party so it start disturbing all the people in the party.

I know this web server who was so piss drunk that the load balancer escorted him out of the club and called him a cab but the web sever passed his pants while waiting for the cab and blacked out. The web server woke up face down on his rack with only his underwear mounted and the rest of his components pulled on his entry way. He checked his wallet and all his cash was gone -- about $40 -- the cabby helped himself but the server wasn't angry, I was just happy I got home

Memcache is primarily an in memory key-value database. It's usually used to cache things and be able to retrieve them very quickly. The forum's PHP code could not connect to it to retrieve what it needed.
