What is the best diet?

I have decided I am going to go on a diet and drop pounds. Since I am an idiot health wise I have come to the legendary GAF for health advice. Now, supply, please ^-^. Anyway, I want a low budget (let's say, $30 every 5 days allocated for food) diet that will make lose fat instead of muscle. Yes, I will be working out. If someone can create a regimen, that would be great. What has worked for you?

Eat in moderation.
Eat 5 small meals a day.
Make sure to get something from every block of the food pyramid in you.

Do more than weight lifting. You need to do cardio. Run! Ride a Bike!
 
its simple, eat when your hungry, don't overdo it. try to eat healthy, take away is alright, but not like every week. Go jogging, or any other long distance exercise that takes your fancy. lifting weights won't help out. To burn fat, you have to do medium to high intensity exercise over long periods of time.
