What is the best looking PS3 game so far?

J-Rzez said:
It's actually pretty much true I think. Between Uncharted, GT5P, and MGS4, the best graphical games are all on the PS3. Throw in the vastly superior sound capabilities of the system too and it's one hell of an experience. And the thing is, these games are all pretty much relatively early in the PS3's lifecycle. There's incredible stuff that's going to be coming out like KZ2 that just pushes everything down 2 steps. I agree though, the hardware isn't vastly superior outside of storage and audio, but you'd be hard pressed to give an explanation to people why these games look so much better than anything else.

We need to talk more about the sound in MGS4 I was playing with these pretty nice head phones and I honestly would cringe and duck when gun fire would go past me...lordy the sound is amazing best of any
game I have ever played.

For now, I think this shows the superiority of the Sony Coding Ninjas more than that of the hardware itself. And you can bet that 1024x768 or not, Sony gave Kojipro as much help as they wanted.

On a related note... I've watched the original MGS4 TGS 2005 trailer, running on an early devkit (one of those with a 7900 and the Cell and the gfx board were connected differently) I think... if anyone wants to refresh his/her memory go to Gamersyde (here specifically) and watch it in its HD glory. The final product is, of course, very good. So much so that I consider it the most graphically impressive game ever made on consoles (tech+art). But I can't help but think that the TGS trailer was a bit beyond what was achieved.

Whether it's ninjas or hardware it's all the same to me as long as the same magic is sprinkled on the next Team ICO project.

I don't know cut scenes looks pretty much the same to me.

Absolutely not. The photo mode perfectly represents the game. andrewfee even did a comparison using photo mode versus and off screen shot of the game. It looks exactly the same. Why would they boost texture detail in photo mode anyways? That doesn't even make sense.
I think it's what Halo 3 does.

Back then, people complained about its baked shadows. Now, in the final version, it's dynamic, with dynamic hair.

After looking at MGS4 again the games are definitely tied for me.

God MGS is amazing

Spoilers!
Act 3 - This part blew me away.

It does which is why the only time Halo 3 looks good is in Deep's photo threads. Its a brilliant idea though you could spend hours just making the sickest wallpapers and screens.

Halo 3 doesn't boost texture resolution in screenshots. It just adds AA, which is what the game really needed ; ;
And AF due to the way it's rendered, so it kind improves the textures... but... why are we talking about Halo 3 on this thread? oO

Anyway, sorry MGS4, but it's still Uncharted, there's no comparison, that game is STILL in a league of it's own...

I know this is a PS3 thread, but I can't agree with you man. Sorry :(

is it ok to take this discussion a little further?

It's ok with me, if there's something better than those on the 360, let me know so I can pick them up ;)

After the massive amounts of Cameo references in the 360 version of this thread I would rather you not take it any further please for the sake of the thread.

Winner. 720p. Texturezilla wins. Flawless victory. Naughty Dog Uber Alles.

Does anyone understand how Uncharted can get those visual textures consistently everywhere in the game and also have ZERO install time and space? I don't get it. What is this magic tech that they're using?

I'm aware of the funnel design of the game, but really? That's it?

Uncharted gets my vote. GT5:P has problems with screen tearing and the jaggies are somewhat annoying. MGS is awesome but suffered from bad textures IMO.

Uncharted loses a ton of points to me because of shitty screen tearing. Screen tearing pisses me off to no end, more than frame rate and resolution and whatnot ever would, I'm surprised not many people complain about it.

But apart from that, it is undoubtedly a beautiful game. A little too colourful for my tastes in some areas, but that's really a subjective issue and I can't blame it for being so.

I hate screen tearing as well and for me it wasn't frequent enough to detract from the overall graphics. It came close at times and I hope that ND fix this for the sequel. I don't want them to think it's ok to leave it as is going forward.

I asked whether Assassin's Creed suffered the same problem in an AC thread because the footage I downloaded off PSN had pretty bad screen tearing, but nobody replied me. :(

Tbh I prefer the very rare tearing in Uncharted to the inconsistent framerate in MGS4 :p It's not that the framerate is bad, but since it's not locked some times it goes to 60fps and then back to around 30 again, it makes the gameplay awkward, as well as the cutscenes.

I've yet to play AC and to be honest have no real desire to do so.

If Uncharted did do all their cut scenes prerendered I would say Uncharted.

But because they do, I have to give it to MGS4. I never said wow so many times when playing a game.

Are these votes being tallied? I doubt it. But for what it's worth Uncharted for me. Undoubtedly. Can't wait to see ND's next project - whatever it is.

Qualifier being that I'm only just into the first act on MGS4.

Uncharted is easily the most technically impressive PS3 game. Metal Gear is second but it is lacking in textures and animation by comparison

1. MGS4
2. Uncharted
3. Rachet

and it was damn close between Uncharted and MGS4, either could have easily been my #1

as far as Rachet its a shame no one it bringing this is as it looked like you were watching a CG movie, breath taking game

Even so, I personally don't think I would award the crown to MGS4 just because of that, despite my gripes about screen tearing in Uncharted. After all, some of the pretty major cutscenes in MGS4 are also pre-rendered.

AC on the 360 suffers from tearing. I think that should answer your question.

i'll vote for MGS4 , the more i play it the more i like the look of it and the art direction is excellent. Not that it's night and day though - i think The Show , R+C, Uncharted are both up there with it.

Throw in the vastly superior sound capabilities of the system

i've been incredibly impressed with Resistance, MGS4 and Uncharted. What sound system you running, J ?

it's not even close - mgs4 gets massacred by uncharted.

naughty dog are tech gods :bow

For me, the screen-tearing in Uncharted automatically disqualifies it. True tech-gods are in frame.

Holy shit, that's just stupid.

Uncharted looks better than MGS 4 during the normal gameplay scenes, but I have to give it to MGS 4 during its more special moments, such as the motorcycle scene.

screen tearing in uncharted is no big deal, i've only seen it on chapter 3 and if that's the penalty for having superior textures, lighting, animation, graphics effects, stable framerate, no in-game loading, no installing bs and a hd resolution, then so be it.

uncharted >>>>>>>> stuttering, sub hd mgs4

i noticed tearing maybe 3 times in Uncharted. so PS3 GTA4 is superior because there isnt any tearing, confirmed by your logic.

so any game with any amount or tearing cant be qualified as a good looking game? there goes Bioshock, Uncharted, Mass Effect, Heavenly Sword, Gears of war, should i continue?

Sales for the game would indicate otherwise, sadly. But what are you waiting for, go get it. It's fucking awesome. I will be replaying it soon. :D

Uncharted has super nice environments, but the character model details you see during real-time cutscenes in MGS4 is unsurpassed. And Ratchet deserves special mention for looking SO goddamn polished. It's like a Pixar movie, why isn't it getting more attention for graphics?!

Is this based on texture resolution primarily? That seems as much an aesthetic choice, IMO. Games like Uncharted and Gears crank the resolution into realms that make the visuals seem more hyperreal than realistic.
