Banned
Only time I've been banned was a result of me being sarcastic and some silly mod not getting the joke. Even the person I was going back and forth with came back to the thread and commented on it.

There should be an opportunity to explain yourself. IGN had something like this. Not that this affects me at all in any big way. Just odd that you're just banned and that's that.

If you look at a post you just finished typing and think "I wonder if I could get banned for this" youre going to get banned for that.

Today I told a bunch of people to grow up. I didn't think I would get banned for it, but I worried it was way too rude heh. I very nearly edited it out, actually.

This will be my fifth year, never been banned. I'm just a pretty swell guy. Don't cause any trouble, and I'm always kind and respectful to other posters, even when I disagree with them.
Yeah, same here. Still, if you don't read a lot first, you could trip over stuff like an argument that's been beaten to death or be unaware of a new policy to certain responses like certain memes.

Edit: I can't believe I've been coming here for over 8 years. o_O

A requested ban doesn't count as a ban right? I've been banned once but it was requested for a couple of weeks, so not for bad behavior.

I still haven't been here for long so we'll see how things play out. Hopefully I won't get perma eventually, I don't think I'm a troublemaker.

The most full-proof way to not getting banned is to not post.

If you have that urge to post, click reply, type it in, then close the browser right after so you can rage about not posting instead of raging about the topic

Member since 2008, I don't think I have ever been banned. I stay away from controversial threads in general and do my best to treat others cordially. I also credit my advancing age for increased patience with general internet tomfoolery.

I would say that 99% of the bans I have witnessed are the result of people not following the "Don't be a dick." rule. The vast majority of the others are from people just being stupid. A tiny, tiny portion I have been confused about.

I mostly see people banned for being stupid and not following the TOS. I usually get confused about bans whenever a controversial topic comes up.

it's hard to get permabanned on here. don't use any hate speech, pick fights often, insult staff, or spam gore/porn and you'll be fine.

there are far more unwritten rules that will catch you a 2 week + ban.

- don't call people viral marketers (even if joking) on gaming side

I see people not banned for this a lot.

One more thing: Gaming is a minefield. PC gamers rule the forums, and are the most vocal. It's best not to antagonize them.

In retrospect, I'm somewhat amazed I wasn't perma-banned due to my old drunken posts. Whoever gave me the second chance perhaps saw, that despite of my peculiarities I usually behave like a good boy.

I know man, I understand, but to regain EviLore's trust you need to do something pretty spectacular, like write him a bad poem or something.

Here's a tip that I think some might find incredibly useful:

Don't start voting threads on Gaming Side without asking a mod/admin for permission first.

If someone had told me about that about a year ago, I might still have my Member status.

I do think I would have caught a ban by now if I stayed on gaming side more. Shit always feels too serious over there.

Nah, I spend most of my time on the gaming side and have never gotten banned. The real trick is just to utilize some common sense. Don't go into a topic-centric thread and try to start shit with the posters in there, for examples.

True. Though, with the console wars heating up, and the warriors strapping for battle, I think I'll just hang out in the OT. lol

Next month will mark my fourth year and I have a bit over 4k posts (not too active but not a lurker like my buddy who has maybe 5 posts in a 2 or 3 years); haven't caught a ban yet.
I have said some things that more than likely came off as disrespectful but I've tried to not directly insult anyone. There have been a couple times where I have gotten heated, started to take things to far, and then reeled it back in by apologizing for being an asshole.

I think having taken my job in Greenland helps me a bit too. I'm not there at the moment (home on vacation), but I cannot post from work as the log-in page is blocked (stupid govt/military networks...). There have been a couple times where I have read something that immediately had me all like "Oooooo that pisses me off!!!" but I didn't have the option to post something dumb and dick myself over by getting myself banned.

I've gotten lucky probably a couple times though and am thankful for it. Being banned would suck and all, but the part I would hate the most would be losing all my subscriptions. I always tell myself I need to copy, paste, and save my sub list but I never do...

I stay primarily on gaming side so the threat is always there to get banned, lol.

I try to be inoffensive and respectful though, and try to hide biases and agendas the best I can I guess. I try to be open minded for most things. I don't really see myself getting banned anytime soon... as long as you stay away from console war threads you should be fine. PS Meeting and E3 are going to be a hell of a lot of fun to watch based on today's wonderful Another Mario Game thread.

Been here nearly 5 years and haven't been banned.

I've said stupid shit over the course of my tenure but only when I knew it wouldn't cause any problems.

I'll never be Banned because I'll never be SO emotionally invested enough in a topic around here that it causes me to go nuts on another person's opinion...stupid, offensive, or otherwise.

A mod will probably ban me (or junior me) now simply because I said "I'll never be banned" simply to exert mod dominance. Then again I know my posts are never important enough to garner attention from mods so I'm safe.

Also I don't participate too much around here either, mostly because a good number of the topics I see pop up tend to devolve into baiting circuses, dog-piles, and witch hunts. I usually just get my daily gaming news, pop into OT for some funny topics, pop into NFL Gaf for some REALLY funny commentary and then leave.

Occasionally, I read the inevitable controversial topic to see how it eventual collapses, and while it gets infuriating to read, I take what I can and back the fuck off.

A destructively passive way to spend time on Neogaf, but whatever. Who cares.

Not that I want to encourage you go to out of your way to get banned, but I would encourage you to participate in topics if you have an opinion that you can express clearly, and you are willing to participate in good faith and politely. I understand being cautious, especially if one is a junior, but unless your opinions are so inherently anathema that you would get banned for expressing them, I don't see any reason not to participate in a topic that interests you, even if it is controversial.

Yeah, you might get banned - you might even get unfairly banned - but getting banned for a couple weeks is really not the end of the world. You come back and you don't make that particular mistake again.

It's hazerdous. You can post, "yea, this game isn't good" and elicit a "fuck you, prove it!" response. Bail out.

I rarely see replies like this, actually. Usually people who get shit back like that worded their original post in a way that's trying to provoke an argument, rather than simply adding to the discussion.

Yeah, if you have a real opinion on something throw it out there, it is why we are all here. (Most of us)
Good or bad it is an opinion.

I guess I didn't add any tips or anything in my post but one thing I try not to do is hold grudges against people who piss me off. I don't ever put people who annoy me or anger me on ignore because I assume that they will say something in the future that could be relevant to me or important in some way.

I've only got two people who upset me everytime I see their posts: one who called my wife a piece of shit, a cunt, and a whore, but he mainly sticks to the Gaming Side, so I don't bump into him.
The other guy ripped me off in the B/S/T thread for almost $200, but luckily he is banned pretty frequently. I try not to make smart-ass comments to him when he isn't banned but sometimes I can't help it. I don't say anything bad really; if I wanted to insult him I would take it to his email or facebook page or something and harassing him in his social media pages isn't a high priority for me. Shit was years ago.
The first guy I make sure to not ever respond to though, because I'll get banned in a single post. Fucking call my wife a whore and a cunt? Oooo, still fucking steamed over that one...

But yeah, anyway some people let stuff roll off their backs and some treat the internet like serious business. I fall into the latter camp, probably because I don't socialize much or have that many interactions with people in every-day life, especially in middle-of-nowhere northern Greenland. So I get really 'into' the actual discussions I have online.
It's important to try not to be like that though.

Whenever I see "banned" under someones name, I read the last few posts they made and I take notes. I've been able to get a feel for what is cool and what isn't that way.
I'm still new here, but I am just going to follow the advice of "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all".

This is what I did. Lurking and reading to get a feel for what is generally acceptable is best.

Another bit of advice: don't go into a thread and post blindly especially if a mod/admin has made it known that X is a no no. Sometimes you don't have to be abrasive to earn a ban if a thread has veered off topic.
