What is your single favorite area in a game?

Although my answer varies every day, I think I'll have to go with the Fallen Arm in Xenoblade Chronicles for today.

For me it has to be Sadrith Mora from Morrowind. This city was one hell of an introduction to Telvanni architecture. It legitimately felt like a city made by people who used magic daily in their lives especially the bit about having to use levitation to get around in those mushroom towers.

EDIT: I should also mention Mordant St. from Shadow Man as a close second. The game had crazy atmosphere for every single level but for me Mordant St. took the cake.

This one is hard. On my subsequent playthroughs of Max Payne I always noticed how much I enjoyed the ambience of the Hotel level

The way you hear distant noises through the walls really made for a great ambience.

Satorl Marsh from Xenoblade Chronicles, especially at night.

That and Valak Mountain at night <3

As much as I love Limsa Lominsa and other water/coast areas... Gridania from FFXIV will forever be the town that I really really wish it was real and that I could live there

Dali Village's Inn in FFIX. Man that game has so many awesome places it's hard to pick just one but the music, the fireplace and the kitty hanging out... Perfection.

Probably Ashenvale from vanilla WoW. It was great to run around there, finding all the weird alcoves and lore locations. Nice music, too.

Not my favorite of all time, but my favorite of this year was probably Irithyll of the Boreal Valley from Dark Souls 3. It was a really visually striking area that was both strangly serene and unnerving. The Pontiff was a fun boss fight.
Realizing you were in Anor Londo was an awesome moment.

Halo Combat Evolved, Two Betrayals, last section before you steal the Banshee and fly up towards the last reactor.

You got the flood fighting the covenant, all out war, with all the weapons, at night, gorgeous graphics, the ultimate sound track, forgot the name...

Unbelievable for me way back when in 2001

Narshe from FFVI. As a kid, no atmosphere came close to conveying reality (the visuals and music made you feel the cold) like that, and it's stuck with me.

Clocktown in Majora's Mask.

Sylvalum in Xenoblade Chronicles X

Clocktown is one of my all time favorite towns in any game.

Xenonblade Chronicles X is basically one giant amazing area. Honestly hard to pick a favorite. But Noctilum is my favorite

And for mood

Placed at the most perfectly paced 'rest' moment in any game ever, and infinitely memorable, with beautiful vistas and interiors, amazing music, and a crazy 'wtf is going on' vibe.
When you go up that first teleporter and see the big island off to the side you're just immediately like 'the fuck is this. THE FUCK IS THAT? I need to go there'

Traverse Town in Kingdom Hearts 1. After what happened to Destiny Islands, it was a place of (relative) safety and it was home, where you could take a break, restock, listen to the awesome music, and see the FF crew.

I'm glad DDD expanded on the area.

FFX : Farplane :

it's basically heaven you can visit to see the souls of the dead. Music is amazing. Tons of subtle hints at upcoming twists and foreshadowing in the sequence. Great emotional catalyst too and tons of character developpement seeing your party interacting with their lost friends and familly

Its tied to me with this place :

Ruins of Zanarkand.

it's the end of the journey. Tidus had to see it with its own eyes. You played 20 to 30 hours to get here, to see it for youself and it's daunting yet beautiful. It's a giant ruin, and open grave, yet so much is at stake and the music kicks in, it's taking the main theme but with a slower, heavier, and yet somewhat epic swift of tone. It's a great foreshadowing of the ultimate twist ahead, one that will change the entire journey.

For me it has to be Sadrith Mora from Morrowind. This city was one hell of an introduction to Telvanni architecture. It legitimately felt like a city made by people who used magic daily in their lives especially the bit about having to use levitation to get around in those mushroom towers.

Damn, I thought for sure I'd be the only one to mention Sadrith Mora. I think it's still one of the most unique and intriguing ideas for a city, not just architecturally, but also politically/socially.

Revisiting the Ishimura in Dead Space 2 is so fucking good

It's such a great example of messing with expectations and as a result it's the only part in the game that is actually legitimately scary

Personally the Nursery was creepier than the Ishimura in DS2.

Village in RE4

This and Phendrana Drifts would have to be mine, but since they're taken already I'm gonna have to go with something I don't see mentioned nearly enough:

Milkman Conspiracy in Psychonauts.
From the topsy-turvy level design to the perfectly realized sense of paranoia, this area outclassed everything else in this game. If there's even one level in Psychonauts 2 that matches this one, that game will be an instant masterpiece.

Painted World of Ariamis, Dark Souls

Incredible haunting atmosphere, intricate and dense level design, challenging enemies, a unique boss, fascinating lore. It has it all.

Hyrule Castle, The Wind Waker

I will never forget the lump in my throat when I first saw this place. Such a great, great moment.

Princess Peach's castle from Mario 64/ Mario Kart 64. The crossover appearance really made the universe feel significant back then.
