What is your single favorite area in a game?

Final Fantasy IX

Castle town of Lindblum. Such a good place to be in post invasion.

i could list of multiple FFIX locations in here, the village of Dali comes to mind too. FFIX has a very calming feeling to it for some reason.

The Opera level in Hitman blood money. I must have played this level 20 times. Loved the Opera music playing while executing the target, and the OST playing after executing the second target and calmly making your escape while everyone loses their shit.

The opening to the first Silent Hill. My first brush with the horror genre in gaming. It is cinematic and still holds up. The beware of dog sign, the pools of blood, the rickety wheelchair, the mutilated bodies, the gurney with a sheet over a body, and of course the demons that appear out of nowhere and kill you. One of the most intense moments in gaming during my childhood.

EDIT: Shit, was on mobile. That Hitman pic is tiny lol.

The Normandy. It feels like home, my space. The place I go when I want to take the next step or where I can go to slow things down. I can joke with Joker, listen to a song from a scientist Salarian, and fuck everyone. No but seriously it's dope it's even got fish and calibrations what more do you need?

The Barrens - World of Warcraft

Visually it's far from the most impressive area in WoW but it's certainly the one I found to be most memorable thanks to the chat. This was the place to chill for low level Horde players and it made for an interesting introduction to WoW. It was common for duels to take place at the outpost known as The Crossroads and for Alliance players to attack it as well.

Deep Roads, in Dragon Age games.

So many enemies to kill, so much exp and loot to gain. Everytime I approach it in Dragon Age Origins, I try to savor every last second of it. No respawning enemies, fixed amount of things you can kill, every fight is precious, thankfully it's not like that in DA:I but it's an action RPG.

Favorite place in a game (one that I want to live in):

Spira (FFX) [after the events of the game]:

Most interesting/fascinating place (that I definitely would not want to live in IRL):

Most enigmatic place, one that had the most lasting effect on me and that I think about the most:

Place I wish could be my own personal cafe/retreat that I could teleport to and read books at:

Lindblum from Final Fantasy 9. Also Treno from FF9. I'd love to stay in any of the towns in FF8 too. Balamb, Dollet, Deling City, Fisherman's Horizon... So much nostalgia.

And for mood

Placed at the most perfectly paced 'rest' moment in any game ever, and infinitely memorable, with beautiful vistas and interiors, amazing music, and a crazy 'wtf is going on' vibe.
When you go up that first teleporter and see the big island off to the side you're just immediately like 'the fuck is this. THE FUCK IS THAT? I need to go there'

Excellent choice, I definitely echo the feeling of awe and curiosity when you first get there. And that wonderful music sends chills down the back, so damn good.

Along with Zeal, I would would pick:

selbina_01.jpg

Selbina from FFXI

I absolutely love the music of this place, and the overall feel of this quaint fishing village. It also serves as your only safe haven in the middle of the god damned dooms. Hoards of gobs were trained to that zone line lol, great memories :).

I loved Orzammar in Dragon Age: Origins.

In an MMO I was a big fan of Ironforge too, so I guess underground Dwarven areas make me happy for some reason. I did also love Kelethin in EverQuest and Gloamwood Pines in Rift. Many other areas of WoW too, Silvermoon included.

Many areas from TW3 and Mass Effect.

So many I'm forgetting from old school JRPGs I'm sure.

Sanctuary Fortress from Metroid Prime 2. It may be the best cohesive piece of 3D game design ever conceived. Absolutely incredible gameplay and audiovisuals.

Runner up would be the Spencer Mansion from REmake.

I really liked the wooded, mountain area in RDR. Had a hut there and just used to go hunting and walking. It was like a holiday in game form.

I'd say Elwynn Forest. It is difficult to explain really, but there was something magical about playing World of Warcraft for the very first time. Think I started around the launch of TBC. I remember I climbed up a hill and looked down on Northshire and thought "Woah, this world is huge." If only I could erase every WoW moment from my head and re-experience it.

Probably been named a few times already:
The Witcher's Beauclair and surroundings.

It's like I've always imagines a fairy tale kingdom to look like. :)

After descending The Great Hollow and then being greeted with the sight of Ash Lake - seeing all of the other hollows just left a permanent mark on me.

Yraal Region, Breath of Fire III

snap166.jpg

Mainly because it reminds me of the joys of ignorance. One of my first RPGs.

I spent so much time when i was younger going back and forth to this area at random points in this game's story looking for Rei and Teepo.

Back in a simpler time when information wasn't 1/8th as accessible. Cheatcentral and GameFAQs was pretty much all i can remember.

Pre-searing Ascalon City or Shing Jea Island from Guild Wars 1.

The Citadel from Mass Effect.

The Moon from Majoras Mask.

Gridania from FFXIV.

Poeta from Aion.

Inaba from Persona 4.

I can't name a single one. But these areas all were jaw dropping to me.

Aperture Science. Just looking around and imagining what things used to be like there has tended to take much of my time when replaying the Portal games. Also the sheer scale of the place plus how ominously empty it is creates such a great atmosphere. This mostly applies to Portal 2, but the testing rooms and escape sequence in Portal had great world building as well.

Lake Hylia from OoT, would just go there to chill as a kid.

Sen's Fortress, from Dark Souls. It's claustrophobic, intricate and riddled with traps. It's designed perfectly.
Meh, this place gets loads of praise but I don't get it. It's just a load of big square rooms, a few traps and some stairs connecting them. It's dark, oppressive and boring, couldn't wait to leave.

"But, the difficulty scales organically as you reach the top, it's so cleverly designed."

So they make the walkways narrower and throw in a few more traps, genius...

My first experience of going afk and then an Orc bashing me in the head with a club. God I miss the game pre-Abyssea

Exactly, Abyssea ruined the game but that's another topic Lol. I would kill for a rollback server with all the exp penalties and glorious grind that came with it

The Shire in Lords of the Rings online. It's like walking into the book, such a great location. The questing has such a great atmosphere too.
I every now and again create a new character just to play through it again, and see all those familiar places and faces.

Quite a bit of Zelda in here.

First area that comes to mind for me is Lon Lon Ranch, particularly as young Link. It's got a soothing air to it and Malon singing in the fields with little Epona is really sweet.

Probably Sylvalum in Xenoblade Chronicles X, but let me praise this one too:

Sen's Fortress, from Dark Souls. It's claustrophobic, intricate and riddled with traps. It's designed perfectly.

I'm torn about Dark Souls. It's a great game, but it's not my kind of game because there is so much focus on combat. However, when I got to Sen's Fortress... It's the only location in the game where I feel the place itself is trying to stop me. It's almost like it's alive.
