What JRPGs to look forward to in 2021?

ryza 2
tales of arise
smt5
Persona 5 Strikers
Digimon Survive
Rune factory 5
NEO: The World Ends With You

If ff16 comes out this year, I might play it however it's looking to be one of the worst in the series so not excited about it, just the main char design already turns me off big time.

There is no release date for Tales of Arise as far as I know. I enjoy the Tales series, so I plan to grab it whenever it comes out. Ryza 2 is coming out this month.
If the news was true, they were wrapping up development in december. I am thinking summer 2021 release

Looks like a great year overall for JRPG fans.

Don't forget that Atlus has confirmed being developing a "commemoration project" for the Persona 25th Anniversary, so you might want to add that to your lists.

Scarlet Nexus
Tales of Arise
Ys 9

Elden Ring and Babylons Fall too but I don't really count them as jrpgs, but what the heck, I'm excited as fuck for them too.

lol NO

they are Japanese RPGs, just because they don't have stereotypical Animu aesthetic doesn't mean they can't count.

who decided what to call jrpg anyways, its dumb, an rpg made in japan is not a jrpg?

unless this is a troll, then you got me 😅
They literally fall under other genres. Disgaea is a TRPG for example. Might as well call platformers racers.

I knew I could rely on the person with the best taste on this entire forum (after myself of course).

Hopefully Elden Ring, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Want to play a good JRPG. Was looking at PS now and stuff but can't find anything. Hope something good comes out soon.

Monster Hunter RISE

I didn't know there was a TWEWY sequel.

It's one of my most anticipated / hoped for things.

Disappointed it's not called The World Ends With You TOO!

$12.49 USD That's not a bad price. I know you're looking on PS Now. Check to see if PS Now has any Tales games.

The best JRPGs coming this year are going to be mobile gotcha games.

seems that's where the market is heading in the east.

Zelda BOTW 2 of course! It's an action RPG, don't assume my genre!

I've decided that Terranigma + Soul Blazer + Illusion of Gaia are coming to the SNES thing on switch too.. looking forward to those.

I'd sacrifice them all for Elden Ring, but I'd get SMT, Bravely Default 2, Nier, SaGa, and Monster Hunter Rise. Meaning, if I could only afford one of them.

I have owned quite a few Tales games over the years. I just recently bought Vesperia on Switch. I had it back on 360 when it came out. I even had Abyss on 3DS. They're good, but I've never finished them.

I wonder how people feel about newer JRPG's versus JRPGs they've missed. Newer releases of older games are an exception. I was scrolling through the 3DS eShop's Role Playing Section and I wondered if SMT IV Apocalypse was worth getting. I owned IV standalone, but i really didn't notice when Apocalypse came out. Here I see some newer games coming out and I wonder if say Bravely Default 2 will be something to get versus catching up on a title or two that I didn't bother getting at launch. There are a handful of exceptions when buying new games, but I've always been specific with which JRPG that I buy. I had a terrible experience back on the Dreamcast and PS2 with JRPGS. It made me not want to buy every single one like I did with PS1. I am a lot more cautious with some of these entries, especially the countless NIS games That get released.
My take on Apocalypse is that if you played SMT IV, you can skip Apocalypse. It reuses the same setting mostly and the story—the main new element—is lackluster to say the least.

Yeah agree, man what a disappointment thta game was for me. At least they made some nice QoL and gameplay changes. I specially liked that demon's had elemental affinities, which made skil inheritance more interesting.

Not sure if we can expect FF7R part 2, or FFXVI. If not there doesn´t really seem to be any big hitters...

Some big titles that are mentioned here are not JRPG´s. It´s an unneccesary discussion but people who like JRPG´s know what is meant by the definition.

FFVIIR2 no way, not before 2023 imXVI maybe at the end of the year if we're very lucky.

In any case you can always go back to older JRPGs.

The question of what defines a JRPG is up there with timeless philosophical questions like fate and evil.
