What makes nintendo franchises so strong?

I don't think that's the point... I like Halo, but it seems like a pretty stagnant franchise to me. Add a few tweaks here, improve there, some new modes/weapons and you have a sequel.

This is true, and goes the same if not even more for CoD.

But Mario? Mario has been in at least 10-15 games on every console Nintendo has ever made.

New New Super Mario Brothers Land 3D Wii U World

Waluigi's Mansion

1. They have been around for 20+ years at consistently high quality
2. They are built around appealing gameplay concepts
3. They appeal to all ages

This... and I won't read more than the 1st page because I know there'll be a lot of "fanboyism and nostalgia" posts...

I think that is kind of the beauty of Mario being so nonsensical. He can do anything and it doesn't have to make sense. Throw him in space, add gravity platforming/puzzles and you have SMG. Why? Who cares! Task him with (insert Super Mario Sunshine plot, I didn't play it, I'm evil) and it works. Have Master Chief play tennis or participate in some life-size board game and it looks weird.

Indeed you can't throw MC into a ton of other games outside of the main games, which it seems MS understands very well thus far.

And while I agree that mario works in a number of games outside of the main series. I don't think any sane person would deny that nintendo are milking mario. I really doubt there is a video game character that has appeared in half as many games mario is in.

For every penny he is worth. No reason for two NSMB games to come out so close to one another in my opinion.

Edit: Talking of course about the 3DS and Wii U versions coming out this year

Can't tell you how many times I've been in a local gamestop to hear an employee talking to a customer without video game knowledge describe the Wii as "just not as good"

Troll Truth™: I worked for GameStop from 2006-2009. When you work there you never know everything about everything and we never hired 10 people who only played Halo. Everybody had their strong points.

I personally knew little of Nintendo's new sales machine other than the fact that we were always sold out of them. Always.

I'm still in contact with our Nintendo rep, I called him recently to bad mouth Sony for their cheep smash bros knock off.

Which is why I usually shy away from bashing them. Can't say I would ever be able to wholeheartedly recommend a Call of Duty game to a paying customer again. Everyone has their own opinion and they are VERY entitled to it.

I grew up and sought other places to get my entertainment in addition to, not in replacement of Nintendo games. This isn't about "outgrowing" them.

You misunderstood me. I'm not saying that you had to "outgrow" Nintendo. I'm saying that not everyone stayed with Nintendo and instead went with Sony or Microsoft. I'm just trying to understand why people on this forum have such a huge persecution complex when all of The Big Three get hate in some form or another.

If Nintendo had an exclusive that really spoke to the 18-24 year old demographic, and I mean was not aimed at selling one copy to a child or it's mother/family, maybe I would be sold.

I'm not saying it has to be M-Rated and full of blood and tits, but something with a serious tone and is NOT a rehash or re-imagining of an established IP like Zelda or Metroid. Something that speaks to me, at almost a quarter of a century old, and motivates me to buy their console.

I doubt they will ever do it. They'll just keep making Mario games until the Moon breaks orbit with the Earth and flies away.

This reminds me of the such high hopes I had for Geist... *Sigh*

I don't think things like cinematic scenes necessarily equate to maturity. I might be the minority, but I'm definitely not interested in making games like movies. I'm not saying a game can't have both nice gameplay and nice cutscenes, but cutscenes are definitely not a priority for me.

The way things are, though, it does seem like some companies are sacrificing level design for movie-like experiences. I'm pretty sure The Last of Us will be a fantastic game, and there's no doubt that there are a lot of resources being put into making each character organic. I know it provides immersion for many people, but it's just not for me.

I'm just worried that more and more focus will be put in these sequences. We've seen the emergence of quicktime events, and I'm assuming these became popular because they made the gameplay seem more cinematic.

We have been having cut scenes for ages. Some of the best games of all time have cut scenes. Like I said before some people look towards games for immersion and context. There is absolutely nothing wrong with certain games taking the cinematic route as long as they are done well. One can also have games like Heavy Rain which is just an extension of a point and click adventure. Heavy Rain is as much a legitimate game as is Curse of Monkey Island. There are different kinds of games and one person need not necessarily like all kinds of games. As long as people are not condescending towards another gamer's likes and dislikes we are fine.

Have you played Xenoblade Chronicles and Soma Bringer? Both are fantastic and some, if not, the best RPGs (especially the former) of recent years. Did they 'speak' to you?

I don't know what you guys have been talking about for 16 pages, but the answer to the question in the thread title is: Quality.

:)

Most 18-24 year olds are not into anime. I know it's hard to imagine it, being here on GAF with 80K members, but it's a fact.

I don't like grinding thus I don't like RPGs. That is playing the safe route, an RPG, I want something different from Nintendo

Madness?
I know that i would've been sick and tired of the Uncharted franchise if it had started on the PS1. That franchise would've been broken up to two and the other games would be like puzzlers : "Uncharted : Runes And Puzzles".

I think Nintendo tends to think of Metroid as their "mature" franchise. The Prime series was great, very atmospheric, and fairly difficult. However, if they truly want that "core" demographic, they're probably going to want to fold a little and put out a few more complex/difficult games.

Moving them goalposts.

Haha. I guess that's a "No" then.

I can't specifically explain it, but there's something about Nintendo's best games (not all of them, mind you) that make them a joy to play. There has to be something to it, if even dyed in the wool Nintendophobes like our very own Drinky Crow and drohne (R.I.P. :( ) would have at the very least a sense of grudging respect for Nintendo's ability to make games.

I'm just shittin on thangs just to shit. I gotta watch what I think is funny when I leave it in a room of sympathizers. I even got some hate-PMs for this too!

Could we maybe lock this thread? At this point it seems to be the source of amusement for drunken trolls...
And it goes on and on pages after the decent arguments were posted, which are probably unread or ignored by all the trolls...

Your troll was successful lawful. Good job. I'm not sure why people bought into it, as it was obviously a work. Gaf likes to blindly take things literally though, so I guess it was easy pickings.

Nintendo franchises are by no means strong. Their questionable dominance in retail is mostly achieved through brainwave manipulation and excessive marketing. Mario is a prime example of that, a game series that never really developed since NES times unlike progressive and deep war simulators like Halo and Modern Warfare that don't rely on how precise the jump button reacts to pushing.

I'm gonna back off before I get banned. I love Nintendo, big parts of my childhood belong to Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon. I might get a Wii U.

You know that admitting that you're posting for the sake of trolling is pretty bannable, regardless of the thread.

Listen to this man. You had me at brainwave manipulation :-)

What makes nintendo franchises so strong?

Universal aesthetics and themes. Industry standard production and design. Faultless communication and control.

And more than anything, Fun. Joyous, infectious, wondrous fun.

I think nastalgia is huge.
I mean there aren't really any new franchises.

Mario
Zelda
Metroid

Metroid isn't that huge, so pretty much just Mario and Zelda. With literally thousands of spin offs :P

Extraordinarily lazy post. You have to blind or living under a rock to actually think this way.

a lot of really good on-point posts in this thread w/r/t the secret nintendo juju, i.e., the extraordinary confluence of immaculately designed games with a welcoming attitude toward new players while not alienating those who are attached to the series from back in their salad days.

you can just toss that out there like it's nothing, and i'm sure as a company it's easy to say this is your goal in your mission statement, but to actually keep new and old customers happy while making something genuinely, incredibly fun and often innovative is insanely impressive. to pin down exactly how they're able to do this, i think you'd have to have a pretty in-depth study of the creative structure, what the corporate culture is like, the way they handle design and quality assurance, et cetera. there's some of this information out there, but it's pretty anemic; for an analog (and i think this comparison has been made before) it may be useful to look at valve, whose attitude toward design and q.a. produce a product that consistently stands above its competitors.

Gonna go with the simplest answer--Nintendo makes good games, and has enough of a track record that most people know it.

My real issue with Nintendo is everything they have done post N64 revolves around gimmicks. Gimmick console or Gimmick based gameplay.

Gamecube - Console size/disc size gimmick.

Wii - Motion control bullshit gimmick gameplay.

Wii U - Tablet controller/more motion control gimmick bullshit.

DS - Two screen/stylus gimmick.

3DS - You know what goes here.

Nintendo IPs - Same shit different console gimmick.

If Nintendo came out with a video game console that did what every other console does by default and differences from others comparable to Sony and M$'s differences I would be much more inclined to play a Nintendo game.

:lol
I have no words.

So what you're saying is: you haven't played Xenoblade. You haven't even tried it. You don't know anything about it and you've been writing it off because it's another one of those anime-RPGs Nintendo likes to play it safe with.

It's anything but safe. It's about the farthest away from safe as you can get. Especially in this day and age.

I don't care that you don't like Nintendo products. Just don't come in here trying to justify your preference with ignorance.

What I wonder is why Nintendo seems to have some of the most vitriolic haters of any company.

Nothing is going to appeal to everyone. Okay, that's fine. There are some highly regarded things that I hate. There are some highly regarded things that I look at and wonder how anybody with any sort of taste whatsoever could like them. But I don't go out of my way to insult these things and the people who like them.

What is it about Nintendo that makes their haters so angry that they just can't keep that rage bottled up and have to spill it out every time the mere words NINTENDO or MARIO or ZELDA are spoken?

basically, they feel like nintendo "owes" them something...
