What realistically can Nintendo offer at this E3?

Literally the only reason to do a press conference instead of a Nintendo Direct... would be to stop the press spreading FUD about them not doing a press conference.

All press conferences give is cringeworthy acted moments between presenters..and live demo's which mess up due to all the interference..or don't mess up because they are faked.

Yep. Anyway, the FUD would just be found elsewhere. Look at how many journalists were "confused" by the Wii U reveal, even though Nintendo had already officially announced they'd unveil the Wii successor and the controller with a screen had been rumoured for some time beforehand.

They're in a catch 22. If they do a press conference, the story will be how bad they're lineup is. If they don't, the story will be that they didn't do one.

If they don't have any hardware to show(new handheld, QOL, whatever), then they aren't going to impress no matter what they do.

I can't see them showing any new hardware.

I expect a new 3DS model at some point..but not as soon as E3.
I expect a QOL reveal late this year..or early 2015..but not at E3.

Some oddball WiiU peripheral is about the only physical product I could see them showing (that and some NFC figures).

Their best hope press conference wise (if they have one) is to show an impressive Zelda..and reveal another Bayonetta 2 type funding deal (to get everyone frothing about how " Nintendo stole our games").

Smash Bros release date of August and three unannounced third-party combatants (among them, Rayman).
X trailer and release date of October.
Fire Emblem x SMT trailer, Q1 2015.
New Zelda trailer, Q1 2015.
Speaking of Zelda, Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword HD re-releases, Holiday 2014 and Q1 2015, respectively. Majora's Mask will be announced for the 3DS, Holiday 2014.
Bayonetta 2 trailer and release date of November.
Bayonetta Classic announced as a remastered re-release in July.
E-Shop exclusive DuckTales Remastered 2 announced for the Wii U.
Wii U Lite announced - bundled with a Pro Controller instead of a Gamepad. Firmware will be updated so that the e-Shop can be navigated with alternate control methods.

Weren't most recent 3DS games third party and low budget titles? Nintendo can request games and approve games, but I don't think they have the power to move games from their handheld to the Wii U especially not with the differences in hardware and development cost, unless they fund such titles.

As for what I'd expect..

Miscellaneous:
  • Miyamoto's new IP. Perfect time to follow up on it.
  • Preview of a revised user account system, or more changes to the current system.
  • Revival of a bevy of DS franchises like Brain Age as part of their QoL movement.
  • Smash Bros.
  • Update on Sonic Boom
Wii U:
  • Assorted HD remakes (Mario Sunshine, Mario 64)
  • Hyrule Warriors.
  • Zelda Wii U
  • Fire Emblem X SMT
  • X
  • Yoshi's Yarn
  • Bayonetta 2
  • Pokken
  • The Wii U is due for an Animal Crossing game since City Folk is going offline.
  • A showcase of upcoming indie titles.
3DS:
  • Majora's Mask remastered
  • 3DS indie titles.
  • Layton followup series
  • GBA VC showcase
  • Localization of some titles like Fantasy Life, Tomadachi and Ghost Watch.

Whatever they have to announce, I just hope there's an actual Nintendo Press Conference this year. Last year was like "Sony's PS4 and MS's Xbone, woow!" And Nintendo was mostly ignored even if they announced big games such as Smash, Pokémon RPG and Mario Kart. That Nintendo Direct at E3 was cool but that's something just Nintendo fans watched, not the mass media.

Considering that this year they are going to announce the new big Zelda game for Wii U (!!!!!!!!) what a perfect way to announce it than with a big Press Conference so we can also see the audience's reaction wich is the coolest thing, especially when Zelda games are revealed. So please Nintendo, do a press conference this year, Wii U needs it.

Bravely second. persona q. devil survivor overclocked 2

Ok you're right about Persona Q, I forgot about that (good ol Atlus is almost only Nintendo 3DS supporter left)

Bravely Default was published by Nintendo, it counts as second party. Third party games are without involvement of Nintendo.

Devil Survivor 2 Break Record hasn't been announced for localization. It still hasn't been released in Japan yet.

There are only 4 upcoming 3rd party games for now. Hopefully SE announces Curtain call soon, and makes that number 5.

Depressing that "new IP" is nowhere on anyone's list of requests :(

Zelda and Metroid, here we go again...

It's always on the list of requests. But Nintendo rarely releases them in major form. Most have been relegated to eShop releases, or retail releases they dump without any backing. Their major internal teams are Zelda and Mario factories.

-Zelda U-holiday 2014
-Metroid
-Pokken Fighters
-Smash Bros 4 demo release and official release date September XX
-Pacman/Bayonetta newcomer reveal
-X Q1 2015
-Yarn yoshi- October 2014
-Majoras mask 3ds
-Starfox teaser (Spring 2015)
-Miyamoto's new IP
-Nintendo 64 HD collection
-Mario sports title for wii u
-Bayonetta 2
-DLC for super mario 3d world
Oh and I get the feeling we'll see a Disney infinity/skylanders type of game from nintendo.

Would like for them to unveil the NFC feature on the gamepad and how it can be used with phones that support that feature. I can think of several uses for this.

Obvious announcements and showing
Zelda
Mario
Donkey Kong
X
Smash Bros
More DS/Wii U stuff

Probably wont happen but should
Metroid
Full on VC support, no more months and months of just 1 game here and 1 game there. Push out a ton of nes, snes, n64, GB(c)/GBA and GameCube
First ever 3D Pokemon game for consoles (and by first ever 3D i mean actual pokemon game, not stadium or any of that nonsense)

I would also like to see some more HD remake stuff from Gamecube and even Wii. Maybe a Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 HD remake.

i am betting more things with mario in it

i am hoping for some swing-for-the-fences new hardcore IPs with big marketing budgets attached

Even without new announcements, they'll still be able to show off upcoming games and get people excited about them.

They have:
-Bayonetta 2
-Smash Brothers
-SMTxFE
-X

All most likely coming out this fall. We know a fair amount about them, but not so much that new trailers won't be exciting, plus Nintendo can give out release dates.

Then there's also:
-Yoshi Yarn
-Sonic Boom
-Hyrule Warriors

which we know very little about.

Plus, they're probably going to do a Zelda U unveil.

So that's eight pretty big titles, almost guaranteed. And that's just for the Wii U: remember that the 3DS actually has pretty good 3rd party, so they'll be able to show off those titles even if they don't have anything of their own. And I wouldn't discount that there will be some surprises.

I think that's actually a pretty strong E3 list.

Games we already know about
+

Mario Strikers U

Animal Forest U

Remakes :
Luigis mansion U, MajorasMask3D, Kid Icarus Uprising U

Gamepad centric game is the new Zelda

NFC :
Nintendo 's sandbox game, wich doesnt require a lot of time to be develloped thanks to the episodic structure of these kind of games.

They need to have a proper conference if they ever expect to be taken seriously. Last year was awful for them. The Nintendo directs just further isolate themselves from gamers that aren't already in Nintendo's sphere.

It's sad I totally forgot about this game. This is the fault of Nintendo though, revealing it way too early.

The only thing Nintendo can "realistically" offer is hope that the Wii U won't be abandoned in a year. They could announce the greatest game ever, and if it's not dated for release at most a month later, there will be doubt it ever gets released on the Wii U. Whatever they bring needs hard facts and gameplay video, or the only thing reported will be the lament of Nintendo games that no one will play, and that will probably still happen.

And heaven help them if they announce a remake, the calls of rehash will drown out any discussion.

I'm hoping the conference is just Iwata immolating himself while NintendoLand fireworks spell out the dates of Nintendo's future ios release schedule.

Nintendo is going to announce new horns for Mario Kart as micro transactions.

Making use of that gamepad, finally!!!

Honk Honk!!!

- Footage of Zelda U
- new Metroid game from Retro (obviously won't happen, way too early).
- lots of X footage
- lots of Dragon Quest localisations
- new Mario platformer (why not) like SM Galaxy
- decent 3rd party offering

Nintendo would have a rockin' E3 if all those things were to happen.

Zelda and Metroid, here we go again...

I really don't care about new IP's to be honest, I'd rather them not to bring any.

They have an enough varied portfolio of series. The problem is that they keep bring back the same old ones.

Mario, Pokemon, etc.
They need to bring out some IP's that haven't been used in a while. That is as good as new to me.
But they won't. It's Nintendo.

You mean like Punch-Out, Kid Icarus, Sin & Punishment and Co? Yeah, it is Nintendo.

They'll probably show a new trailer for Zelda: Hyrule Warriors.

MAYBE a trailer for the next official Zelda.

New Sonic Boom, Bayonetta 2, Smash U/3DS & 'X' trailer.

Fire Emblem X SMT would be sweet, to be honest I'm expecting it, it's been a while since we heard of it.

Maybe 2-3 Wii U/3DS new 'unexpected' announcement, it would be more than welcome, but 1-2 would be more realistic. That's pretty much it.

Skipping E3 main conference last year was a huge strategic mistake from Nintendo in a time they needed to promote and advertise their machines, specially the WiiU. Their Direct only restriction sounded like a side presentantion, didn't had nowhere the same impact on the mainstream appeal like a big press conference like always was before could have done. They need to make a big presentation again. I know everyone loves the "WiiU is dead" meme here, but Nintendo can at least give an effort to improve it's performance. They can't no longer compete against PS4, the thing is selling constantly, but they can still manage to compete for the second place against the XBO, so it would be premature to raise the white flag yet. A strong WiiU focused presentation at E3 this year might give the impression that WiiU is alive and can compete. Third-party support, at this moment, is very hard to keep, given how awful they performed, but Nintendo now needs to do something similar to the N64, rely heavily into their first and second-party titles to keep it alive. Some exclusives from other companies might help, too, but that's gonna be a bit tough.

What they should do, IMO, at E3:

- Announce a remodelled WiiU now called Wii 2 and advertised it as the real successor to the Wii with Nintendogs built in and NSMBU/NSL bundle.
- Present a compilation with the best games so far made for WiiU with gameplay footage. This should include third-party games, too.
- Price drop it to 250$.
- Announce a "Platinum/Best Sellers" line-up for cheap including WiiU's best hits so far: NSMBU, ZombiU, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Lego City, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Wind Waker HD, New Super Luigi and SM3DW as part of the line-up. COD: Ghosts, Blacklist, ACIV, Origins and NFSMWU (this one unlikely because of Nintendo/EA relationship) should be part of it, too.
- Gameplay demonstration from Bayonetta 2, X, Zelda U, Smash Bros., Yoshi's New Island, Sonic Boom, Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei, Hyrule Warriors
- Announce retail version of Wii Sports U.
- Reveal more games. First and second-party, more collaborations between Nintendo and third-parties. Where's Nintendo big guns for WiiU? Where's Animal Crossing? Pokémon? Metroid? Star Fox? Brain Training? 1080? ExciteBike/Truck/Bots? Wave Race? A sequel to Kid Icarus? They should diversify their line-up the best they can.
- Reveal release dates for their most games and announce a solid line-up for this holiday.

This is all useless if Iwata persists in keep it ND only as he did last years (and he probably will).

  • Show Wii U games Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Metroid
  • Commit to significantly improved Virtual Console support
  • Bring Virtual Console to mobile/tablet and PC
  • Announce mobile/tablet versions of popular IP
  • Reveal a great Nintendo account system
There is a lot of money to be made off their back catalog. They could also allow indie developers or third-parties to work on mobile/tablet versions of some of their IP. Ultimately, stay in the hardware biz and keep the new, premium experiences on their own hardware, but get more people introduced to the Nintendo universe and get them hooked to their Nintendo Account and the IP.

They need some vision casting. Right now they only release info on things releasing in the upcoming quarter. I realize the need they have to be secretive but they need to show tangible things they are doing to move forward.

I expect some talk of the 3DS successor at this E3.

They can offer hope. Give an insight to what the future holds for Nintendo. Nintendo can offer an apology to their fans for ignoring/disrespecting them. Nintendo can show games @ E3.
