What realistically can Nintendo offer at this E3?

Zelda U is the only thing that they can bring out to amaze us. This is the first year in a long time that I expect Nintendo to have no big surprise reveals, considering that F-Zero, Starfox, Metroid are dead and every other big title has been announced or released recently.

I'm going to be pissed if they don't have a press conference. I don't want the Zelda reveal to be a slideshow like what happened last year.

I don't really care what they announce, only that it has reasonable release dates. Announcing a slew of games to come out 'sometime next year' ain't gonna cut it. If they can announce some new titles, Gamecube remakes whatever, to come out this year, I'll be well pleased.

And yet, so many people do. Imagine that.

Although really, I think a Wii U Pokemon game would be totally enjoyable, at this point it's not really conceivable budget-wise. Oh well.

Please explain the appeal to me. I'm dying to know

A full fledged Pokemon game on the WiiU could do wonders and be awesome, but a Pokemon MMO is the demon child that was gruesomely mutated and amputated off of that idea

Snark aside, I don't see the appeal at all. For one, they would have to overhaul thebattling system. Pokemon has an incredibly deep battle system that really reveals itself in competitive play, and is also one of the last bastions of turn based gameplay. Besides this, I'm an advocate of the whole "Pokemon makes an MMO in real life" ideaology

Given that Iwata only recently seems to have understood that the rest of the world does not fit the Japanese mold Nintendo wants it to, I don't expect that they'll be showing off a lot of new stuff we want to see. And I don't like it.

Here's what we're guaranteed to see:
  • Smash Bros 4. - Because the game will most likely wait until the end of the year to come out.
  • Bayonetta 2 - Nintendo is probably now banking on this one more than they expected they would when they first picked it up.
  • X - This probably won't even hit the US until 2015.
  • Zelda - This is their big title. They'll probably open with it. I expect it will look very good.
  • More Zelda - Hyrule Warriors. I personally couldn't give less of a shit about this game, but some people do. It will definitely get another trailer.
  • Yarn Yoshi - I don't know why Nintendo thought it would be a good idea to greenlight so many platformers when there were several crucial genre gaps to be filled.

There will not be a new F-Zero shown. And I highly doubt that there's a new Metroid ready to be shown, given recent comments from Nintendo. Maybe Starfox will show up, but again, I really doubt it. SMTxFE is another one that I kind of doubt gets shown off.

Animal Crossing might be announced as well, but I honestly don't care. It would be really great to get some new fucking IP's that aren't exclusive to the 3DS eShop.

Wii U

* Zelda U (reveal + demo (this is why I'm thinking a stage presence might suit them better this time))
* Animal Crossing U reveal
* Super Smash Bros. (trailer, anywhere between 1 and 3 new characters, possible release date)
* Bayonetta 2 (finally going for a release date here)
* X (title and possible release date)
* Hyrule Warriors (trailer with final title and release date)
* Sonic Boom (trailer, additional information, possible release date)
* Possible news / full reveals for some of the games hinted at (Myamoto's IP, Yarn Yoshi, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem)
* Possibly another HD remake of a Gamecube / Wii era title (MP, Super Mario Sunshine / Galaxy, F-Zero GX)

3DS

* Pokémon Z
* Monster Hunter 4
* Super Smash. Bros.
* Majora's Mask 3D

The above list covers what I conceive to be fairly likely. However, this being Nintendo, after all, there is always a good chance of an out of left field announcement (which is part of what makes their presentations so intriguing).

Despite the fact that 3DS sales are in decline, the Wii U is going to remain their primary focus. Realistically, I think that, aside from games, we could hear about future system updates to include further functionality (streaming, media playback, progression towards an account system), a new SKU or another price drop if manufacturing cost permits it at this stage.

Wii U
- Zelda Wi U (absolutely not coming this year)
- Smash release date + big character reveal
- X trailer + release date
- Bayonetta trailer + release date
- 2 casual/party/family games
- One nice surprise (Star Fox, F-Zero, new IP)

3DS
- Monolith Soft 3DS game reveal
- Metroid 3DS
- Majora's Mask 3DS
- 3DS redesign again

I have a feeling that this new Zelda will be a radical departure of the Wind Waker variety.

Depressing that "new IP" is nowhere on anyone's list of requests :(

Zelda and Metroid, here we go again...

I think this pretty much sums up Nintendo's problems today. Looking at all these lists, they're almost all filled with exactly the type of software the Wii U already plays host to. Essentially, the only things any of us can predict Nintendo doing, is basically rehashing their lineups from previous gens back to the Gamecube. How many people are likely to be waiting on Zelda, Metroid, Sonic etc and hasn't already been sold on a Wii U? Nintendo needs games that don't simply overlap with all their other releases. Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Zelda all selling 3million doesn't help much if they're all selling to the same 5million playerbase. The only established Nintendo franchise I could see having a significant effect on the Wii U would be a full fledged Pokemon.

Oh, and if account-bound purchases isn't announced by then, then they deserve to sell negative consoles.

I think they will get gobbled up by MS and even moreso I'd guess Sony and their presentations. But the biggest thing would be for them to have a show, it was an absolutely atrocious idea to not have one last E3. Do a Nintendo Direct beforehand to build some hype with some vague teases to build interests and do something wild for E3 to get people to start talking about Nintendo.

To everyone expecting a Smash date, obviously you don't know the Nintendo Release Date Cycle™.

It goes:

1. They announce the year.
2. They announce the quarter of the year.
3. They announce what season it will be out.
4. They announce the month it will be out.
5. They announce the release date.

We haven't even reached step 2 for Smash! I predict we will be upgraded from 2014 to "Holiday 2014" at E3.

All nintendo has to do is just put out some more damn games. That's it. Some new ips would be nice. And a zeruda trailer to top it off.

They need some vision casting. Right now they only release info on things releasing in the upcoming quarter. I realize the need they have to be secretive but they need to show tangible things they are doing to move forward.

I expect some talk of the 3DS successor at this E3.

We know we'll see Zelda, Smash Bros, and a bit more on some previously revealed titles.

But what I really wanna see is something new, I'd be down for a new IP.
I'm personally not really hyped for anything other than Zelda, so go ahead, surprise me Nintendo.

You know, I think there's actually a chance that Nintendo will announce a new F-Zero/Starfox/other seemingly dead franchise at E3. Nintendo are desperate to get people interested in the Wii U, and E3 would be the perfect place to announce something aimed at hardcore gamers. But at the same time they're sorta playing it safe, so instead of making a new hardcore IP it would make more sense that they just revive one of their old hardcore franchises. They already funded niche games like Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2, so why not one of their well-known franchises?

It obviously wouldn't save the Wii U but neither will Mario Kart and Smash Bros.

Sadly, and I know im saying this for just a handful we bought the Wii U for these games im sorry. Yea new IP is cool but lets see new metroid, zelda.. HELL YAH!

Hold your breath for that last part.

so there will be less negativity around here come June

I just want an actual conference this year.

If a variety of new games are not announced beyond what is rumored to be there (NFC game & Shiggys game) then pack it up for the Wii U.

That happened during the January 2013 Nintendo Direct. That kind of event is a once in a generation kind of thing, you can't really expect it every year, at least not for Nintendo. They announced games at that Direct that will lead them not only through 2014 (Kart, Smash) but 2015 (Yoshi, SMTxFE, Zelda).

Not necessarily. If the nfc game turned out to be nintendota or poke-dota, that'd have a fantastic shot of turning things around all alone.

Then they'll pull a goldeneye and completely abandon the genre at the end of the generation instead of pressing their advantage.

Miyamoto is Head of Software for EAD and a Board Member. Maybe he's over-seeing a game that's special to him, but he's unlikely to be directly producing, and even less so, directing, a new title. If they say 'Miyamoto's game' it's more than likely to be for marketing purposes, than representative of his actual involvement.

If that was the case when it's their swan song, I couldn't imagine the drought that would occur.

I don't really care about anything except them actually getting a Zelda OUT. I don't know how long they'll keep the Wii U on life support if PS4/XBO completely engulf them and as a launch Wii U purchaser I think I've earned a damn Zelda game.

recent E3s have been so awful for Nintendo i really don't expect anything mindblowing at all. Realistically there will be playable Smash, MAYBE a Metroid teaser, and Zelda, Iwata talking a lot about sales, some Animal Crossing surprise, Mario Golf

Directs are somewhat cool but I wish Nintendo would make a big E3 show again, not for me but for the public who don't know shit about these bi-monthly videos

I'm really interested to see what Nintendo brings to E3 this year. It needs to be big. I suspect, as others have mentioned, that it won't be.

As someone who doesn't own the Wii U, this is what I want to see:
  • Acknowledge the Wii U problem.
  • Wii U price cut.
  • Annouce NES, GBA, SNES, N64 and GCN Virtual Consoles with near-complete catalogs for the Wii U.
  • Smash Bros.
  • Zelda U
  • New main-series Mario
  • FPS Metroid U
  • Announce new third party partnerships, bringing new third party titles to the Wii U.
If we see most of this, I'll buy.

As someone who owns a 3DS, this is what I would like to see:
  • Announce NES, GBA and SNES Virtual Consoles with near-complete catalogs for the 3DS. Cross-buy with Wii U.
  • Metroid Prime 3D / New Metroid FPS entry
  • Majora's Mask 3D
  • Resident Evil Revelations 2
  • New GTA [X] Stories entry.
  • New Star Fox.

They need a miracle at this E3. So, surprise annoucement: First home-console Pokemon for Wii U. Has small-scale MMO component.

If that's their idea of vision casting, count me out for several years.

Prepare for extreme levels of disappointment in May.

Am I missing something, or is this going to be utterly underwhelming in every sense?
Earlier in that paragraph,
Now, they'll of course have interesting stuff- Zelda will probably be good, Smash will grab some attention, and I'm sure X and Bayonetta will be praised.

It's gonna be underwhelming for you. Zelda, X, Bayonetta, and Smash will please me. A new Zelda announcement is always great.

people need to stop looking at the wii u as a salvageable situation and more like we are currently witnessing the tail end of the system. the same is true of the 3ds.

for e3, i imagine they'll announce connections with qol, their plans for improving their digital future, and maybe one or two games that were greenlit for the wii u and/or 3ds some time in 2013.

i'm on the fence about zelda. i think it may happen, but it will probably wind up another twilight princess sort of game, otherwise it'll be a waste.

before e3 we'll get mario kart. that will be about it for wii u. the 3ds is at least getting mario golf and yoshi and kirby in the states, so it's not a total drought on that end. maybe during the e3 direct we'll see more localizations like monster hunter 4g. yokai watch and dragon quest vii may be ones to keep an eye on. the 3ds will probably see that majora's mask thing, whatever it is.

during the e3 direct, nintendo will announce release dates for hyrule warriors, smash bros, bayonetta 2, x, sonic boom, and probably yarn yoshi. if zelda isn't shown here, then it isn't happening for the system, or it'll be a multiplatform release.

nintendo will probably save talk about successor platforms for a non-direct thing. their goal for 2014 and early 2015 is to sell existing hardware and get people interested in qol (which is bonus stuff not meant to replace said hardware).

I expect Nintendo to return to this years E3 stage with the following...

Short QoL presentation - Spring 2015 release date.
Zelda U reveal - "2015" release date.
Metroid U reveal - "2015" release date.
Animal Crossing U reveal - Spring 2015 release date.
Mr Miyamoto's new Gamepad focused game revealed - Winter 2014 release date.
Two new Smash character reveals and a release date of November 2014.
Full X reveal including new name, trailer and gameplay. Release date of November 2014 in Japan / Spring 2015 in the West.
New Bayonetta 2 trailer / gameplay - Release date of July in Japan / September in the West.
Trailer with new footage of Yarn Yoshi, Sonic Boom, Zelda Warriors and SMT X Fire Emblem - all "2015".

What I would also like to see at E3 but not going to happen...

Official WiiU price cut Worldwide to the original launch price of Wii - $249/ÂŁ179/Y25 000.
Mario Galaxy 3 reveal, "2015" release date.
Kamiya making a new Starfox game.
Sumo Digital making a new F Zero.
Platinum making Wonderful 102.
Ubisoft making ZombiU II.
New 2D Metroid game for 3DS.

I'd rather another Nintendo Direct than a painfully bare press conference to be honest.

A new Metroid/Zelda, and updates to Bayonetta and X would suit me just fine. First party is what I bought my Wii U for, after all.

They've basically been showing the same tent pole games for a year straight so I'd say something that's not X or Bayonetta. I guess that's why they went dark on Yoshi's Yarn.

If Metroid happens it'll be for 3DS.

That a BIG if. If I had to guess, their big 3DS games for E3 will be:

-Majora's Mask 3D
-Pokemon Z
-Smash Bros
-New Super Metroid
-MAYBE a new 2D Mario (that doesn't use the "New" name)

they are doing a direct, they will cover already announced games, add maybe 3 or 4 new game announcements for 3ds, and at the end , they will show a teaser or screenshots of the new zelda

They don't always directly follow this pattern. I mean it's usually what happens but not always. I think not getting a Smash release date is pretty likely though I could see them jumping straight to release date to drum up hype since it's Smash.

Am I the only one expecting them not to show the QOL at E3? I dont think they will

I'm pretty sure they directly said at the investor's meeting that they'd show off QOL at E3.

So, curious here. You say you think the 3DS and the Wii U are currently at the tail ends of their lifespans. That they'll spend the rest of 2014 and the beginning of 2015 selling off remaining hardware and drumming up hype for QOL. But you don't think that Nintendo is going to replace either of those platforms with the QOL.

So what do you think Nintendo will do once the QOL launches and before their next platforms release? Do you think there will be a somewhat lengthy period of time where Nintendo releases literally zero software for any of their platforms aside from QOL?

Nintendo has done nothing but dig their heels in on the Wii U. I think they will continue to stick it out with the system for a while longer. I think the QOL system might have BC with the Wii U though, which would lessen the blow of a new system in Nintendo's eyes.

I think it's sad to see the predictable and wishful :

Zelda
Metroid
Mario
Kirby
Yoshi
Donkey's

I don't even know what they can do but, all I know is that I want them there at E3 2014. New hardware, it's gotta be new hardware.

I'm just hoping Nintendo avoids the nostalgia porn, because I want to see something new...and by new I don't mean ~*~*~ NEW KIRBY'S DREAM WORLD ~*~*~

Show me games like X or Galaxy.

they did?quality of life product, at a gaming convention ok.

Like galaxy? Then that would be nostalgia porn

Open with Smash Bros. Holiday release.

Nintendo praises third-party characters in Smash Bros. like Sonic.

Sonic Boom.

They praise Platinum Games and show Bayonetta 2.

They talk about collaborations and show some of Hyrule Warriors and SMT x FE. They pretend both games have never been announced before.

They talk eShop successes. They talk about how eShop has allowed them to be really creative. NES Remix Volume 3.

"Of course, we also have big adventure titles." They show a flashy new X trailer, realizing the actual gameplay bored people last time.

Yarn Yoshi.

Miyamoto's new game revives an old beloved IP (take your pick), ruining it by forcing you to buy plastic shit. The game later bombs because of a combination of Wii U and NFC. The IP is killed forever.

More old IP! Majora's Mask 3D.

Remakes in 3D AND HD! Mario Galaxy HD. "You said you wanted it, and it was low-effort enough, so we made it."

QoL talk. Iwata quietly mutters that he can't wait until he doesn't have to deal with entitled gamers. Fireworks. Over.

I dont see a reason for them to do anything but a Direct?

Signs are pointing to that's what they are doing at most, small venue PC if not

The annoying thing is there are quite a few already-announced titles which aren't out yet and won't be out by E3, so most of the games they have to show we've already seen before or know exist.

Hopefully a gamepad-less sku announcement. I already have a Wii U but for the sake of this console, this needs to happen. With a system firmware to make the console work without the gamepad.

essentially, yes. 2015 will be remaining software. maybe the wii u will get an animal crossing in this time. 3ds should get bravely second and ace attorney 6, among other games from third-party partners. in that time, they'll make their next platforms known and have vague release dates ready for 2016.

if 2016 is a target, then they need to be working on games for those platforms now. that means whatever retro is working on is scheduled for one of those systems.

Literally the announcement of any previously unheard of 2014 games would be awesome. Give me another full fledged game and a WW style HD remake and I'm sold
