What video formats does PS3 play?

I want to convert a YouTube video to a PS3 format video for a friend, but the filesize is coming out ridiculously huge.

I'm using SUPER, and selecting the PS3 setting. I set the video to be 640x480 with a 288 kbps video bitrate, and it's coming out at over 400MB. This is based on a file that was initially 23MB.

Help would be appreciated.

mpegs. Ive been converting all my avi's and wmv's so that I can watch porn properly

It'll play mpg and mp4s I believe.

I could never get SUPER© to work properly, I have a lot more success with ps3 video9. It's also free but seemed quite a bit more user friendly to me. It sucks at some containers though, especially mkv in my experience. I've had very few avi/divx files not encode properly using it, and it works relatively quick.

This sounds like more of a technical OT topic, but it has the PS3 in it...

I think your encoder isn't encoding. h.264 @ 640x480 with a 288 kbps video bitrate does not spit out a 400MB file. I don't use SUPER, but perhaps you're just transcoding it to mp4 uncompressed?

I know, it's really screwy. MPC says that it's using H264, though. Perhaps the PS3 mode in SUPER is borked.

I can't get a Quicktime exported h.264 MP4 to run, ever.

Then use the MeGUI-PS3 profile. :D

It's harder to set up, but none of my encodes for the PS3/360 have yet to not play.

That's weird. I've been converting videos using QT pro for months now, and they all work perfectly on PS3. Few more people I know do the same, no problems whatsoever.

In fact, when it comes to H264 .MOV files (such as trailers from Apple.com or Yahoo), you don't even have to convert them, just choose Passthrough for both video and audio and the resulting MP4 plays on PS3.
