What was SEGA thinking with Virtua(Fighter) Quest???

Remember the insane hype behind this game?

Shenmue engine(Im pretty sure) - VF characters - Open world and well...I don't know what the fuck happened. I was expecting a story with Akira traveling to the VF tournament, seeing all sorts of cool shit along the way, when I first heard the news.. That slowly went to shit :-/ And they turned in a half-assed product.

What was everyone else expecting out of the title when it was announced?

I expect to see that image Johntv was always posting back in the day that had the kid from this game in it.

Didn't this game sell a ridiculously low number of copies? The only sales figures I saw were from IGN and neither the PS2 or Gamecube version broke 1,000. :lol

Of course, who knows how reliable that is/was.

Early on I think it was rather apparent the direction that game was headed.

With how their other franchises were coming along at the time, this came as no surprise? Is that what you meant..?

Wow,,,I don't follow sales but wow... That reminds me of that one PC adventure game that sold like 11 ccopies in it's lifetime. :lol

I seem to remember this game even had an area ripped right out of Shenmue with the warehouses. The whole thing was like some bizarre message from Sega that we should all be punished for liking Shenmue, and this was how it was going to be from then on. Both this game and Shadow the Hedgehog began the clearly marked era of me abso-fucking-lutely hating Sega. It took years until Valkyria Chronicles allowed them back into my heart.

It was also a limited release to a specific retailer, if I'm correct.

F.A.K.Edit: Looks like Wiki has no info on it. Hmm...

sega release a vf game for wii with no motion controls just normal inputs do it do it now!!

Also got a gcn for vfq never brought it
had ps2 and vf4 wish i kept it now

at the time i had a real negative attitude to sony for kiling the dc off. Now i learn not to be a fanboy and just enjoy games for gaming sake and buy what i can afford or like (will get a ps3 in a few more years for the blu ray)

i guess the whole anti sony thing was all down to the 16 bits wars back in the day and a new kid on the block starts to mess up the scene in the 32bit era killling off sega in the end.

16 bit wars you had to be there to understand crazytimes man, don't talk to me about them man you wern't there you don't know what it was like fuck 'nam man that shit is pussy compared to the 16bit wars

:lol

If it makes people feel better, it seems Tose made the game.

I vaguely recall seeing the number 500 thrown around. 560-something?

Yeah, this is like Spikeout... shipped in really low numbers, sold really low numbers. At the point of release, I'm sure they were thinking the same thing any publisher of a dud title is - might as well try to make some money back on this.

When they originally greenlit the idea, I'm sure a youth-oriented adventure game with elements of Pokemon and one of their most popular franchises in Japan seemed like a great idea. Probably they were hoping for success like Mega Man Battle Network.

Alas, they caught TOSE on a bad day.

I always thought ShenMue started as a Virtua Fighter Quest but later they changed characters and ended up with ShenMue. Ryo looks kind of a younger/softer version of Akira even.

I think they STARTED with a grand idea, thinking it was gonna be big and awesome but then as the years went on they just ended up going ah fack it and phoned it in. I imagined constant VF characters and settings and everything all over the place, not whatever it was we ended up with.

I do own the GameCube one, never really played it much though lol. I just got it cause I felt I had to, had been wanting VFQuest since it was announced but by the time it arrived I had no interest in what they gave anymore.

I've got Spikeout also, :lol again was really looking forward to it then when I actually played it I was like meh.

If Virtua Quest is rare, you sure can't tell with all those copies of it (for both PS2 and GC) on eBay and Amazon, and I've seen it before in person too, and not just once or something... I very much doubt it sold like 500 copies. Maybe it should have, given how awful all reviews agree it is, but if so it's hard to believe considering that it it's pretty easy to find... (the fact that it's cheap is easy to understand given its "quality", though... or is it just that nobody wants the thing? :))

I did find something saying that at least in '04 it only sold a few hundred copies in the US, but still, considering, it's kind of hard to imagine that it didn't sell any more after that or something...

Pretty sure that was just its first month.

I was kind of amused that Sega went so far as to take the Virtua Fighter name out of the title for the US, even though it would've assuredly bombed... slightly less... with it.

I remember some of the vague hype about it, someone seeing a part of its "script" or something :lol

Weren't they trying to capitalize on effectively the Beyblade/Yu-gi-oh/Pokemon market, a shounen adventure focused on collecting and training to become the best?

It's not the most illogical idea in the world, it's just that the approach they took was a little odd. Especially since the fighting earned them a T rating in the US.

No, I mean the first time I heard about it was a preview in EGM that seemeed to indicate exactly what the game would be like...and it wasn't good.

Quite a bit of hype actually. It was gonna be the Virtua fighter Beat em up adventure.
Must've been from the early planning stages then. I don't see how anyone can see the screens for the game and not see it for the shit spinoff that it is.

That's the thing, the hype was really big before there were any screens.

I recall this as well, then the screens came out :lol

The idea of a Shenmue like (or heck, even something more like Yakuza) Virtua Fighter spin-off still sounds worthy of purchasing in my mind =(
