The only threads on this site that actually produce any semblance of active discussion are threads like this that seek out drama, especially regarding Resetera. So, if you are obsessed with Resetera drama this place is still good.
Thanks for returning after a year to tell us this.

Lets be honest. You know nothing about what goes on here.

Every couple of days someone like you logs back in and says either...

A) Gaf is obsessed with Era and they don’t care about what is going on here

B) This place is a ghost town and is irrelevant and we don’t care what’s going on here

C) Combo of A and B

And you people always disprove your own points while posting your message. At least try harder.

Many are happy here now. And many are happy because boring low effort posters like yourself left this site.

Why you so obsessed with us brah?

This thread has unfortunately devolved into a bitch about resetera thread. There's a dedicated place for that sort of discussion so that it doesn't infect other threads.
https://www.neogaf.com/threads/off-...ont-make-it-personal-keep-it-in-here.1462647/

Any further posts discussing resetera here will result in a warning on your account and a thread ban.
Seems like a riot took place here or your beard wouldn't be seen peeking out from the forest. Thanks for the update!

I'd love the ipad thread.

Hah! Caretaker of the Apples, eh?

I think there are a lot of varied threads in here. I recently made one about Void Bastards, for one. If you take a look around, you may find that yes, a lot of threads are less active, but that does not mean those threads don't have a form of existence. They do exist, and if you would take a moment to take a look around instead of relaying a message that frankly, is not entirely correct but also has been said numerous times before, then you may find some new threads to enjoy. *

*This is also why people react hap-hazardly to your post: Because it has been said numerous times already and it has been disproven the same amount of times, people grow wary of hearing the same thing over and over. I don't think everyone on ERA is terrible either, so why would you rule us all with the same spanner?

Thank you for your time!
Funny you say that, by the way, as the threads on ERA that usually get active discussion are literally threads that seek and generate drama themselves aswell.

Nice. 23/35= 66%.

Thanks for counting. I'm from 2010 myself.
I counted the threads on Gaming Forum front page, and fascinatingly, the same ratio holds. 26 / 40 OPs (66%) are by accounts registered pre Oct-2017. So there is a core of long time users, who for one reason or another choose to post of GAF. It’d be interesting to see stats on the daily actives trends as well as the userbase profiles.

Wow, that's fascinating. Same percentage.

Two-thirds of NuGAF is oldGAF.

Interestingly, same anecdotal test yields only 15/40 (37.5%) on Off Topic and 17/40 (42.5%) on Politics.

It’s almost as if the old gamers are left but people discussing politics have migrated

That's interesting, too. I think it means that a big percentage of the new members are interested in political and OT discussion.

I’m just going to holyfuckingshit this post from 3 June 2017 up here

This is all very reminiscent of what happened to off-topic for a couple months post-election. Of course, that madness turned out to be directly induced through sabotage by a now-former admin secretly banning *hundreds* of members totally outside of any justifiable grounds (not that any attempt at justification was made to begin with, being undisclosed and undocumented bans) in some 85-90% of each of those bans that were subsequently investigated after we became aware of the incident.

NeoGAF is a discussion forum; the whole point is to disseminate information and debate it, on civil terms, in an atmosphere that encourages healthy skepticism, fact-checking and credible sourcing, challenging preexisting worldviews and talking points and biases by providing a platform for a diverse audience to contribute, etc. And yes, the site does lean progressive, because it is inclusive and evidence-based and intolerant of hate speech. But while there are core values associated with this place, there's no point in discussion without providing a framework that allows for multiple perspectives to engage with each other.

I mention all this because, particularly for those couple months I mentioned when anyone trying to operate in good faith within the aforementioned parameters I've set up for this place ended up sniped en masse, Off-Topic suddenly became unrecognizable to me some 15 or 16 years after we set this side of the forum up. The place kinda turned into what this Evergreen outcome sounds like: with everyone who tried to contribute to civil discourse systematically thrown down the well, the remaining members either stayed silent or radicalized up, and we were left with a squad of polarized "progressives" unwilling to have a conversation with anyone about issues, repeating the same talking points in every thread to each other in a self-righteous echo chamber, newly confident that any non-conformity would be driven out or otherwise made to disappear. This was not just ostracizing people attempting to challenge reductive, exclusionary "with us or against us" polarized rhetoric, either (and that should absolutely be challenged), but also anyone even trying to have a conversation within that radicalized bubble. People were driven out, character assassinated, labeled traitor for "not sounding angry enough," or for not being entirely on board with ostracizing someone else for the same reasons.

There's nothing righteous, informed, or progressive about that. It's just a sanctimonious, vitriolic, self-destructive circle jerk that drives out the kind of people most valuable to discussion: not the "retweet my Side and quote it in yells or else you're The Enemy" people, but the people engaging on each individual issue with critical thought and an open mind, willingness and capacity to perform independent investigation into the materials initially presented, come to an independent conclusion and present it, and to allow the same from folks who have made similar effort but with different credible sources or different justifiable conclusions than your own.

That's the sort of thing I'm seeing here. Professor's conclusions about the event that prompted the protests should certainly be challenged, but he did justify his positions reasonably and stay civil throughout the argument he presented. Yeah, that annual event change-up is a complicated issue, as we can see by all the folks here struggling with the right and wrong of it, so it's absolutely a legitimate topic for an academic debate. And that's all he did: debate the merits of it and the campus ethics of an exclusionary event with what he felt were undercurrents of pressure to comply or end up branded a racist/traitor/whatever.

...and now we're seeing exactly that, with an aggressive push for his removal, threats against him, and even an order issued that the chief of campus police not take measures to ensure the professor's safety on campus.

Smear campaign articles posted earlier here that attribute *swastikas* being spraypainted by some apparent alt-right dickwads who have involved themselves here, and doxxing alleged to have occurred at some point along the way by third parties unrelated to the professor (alt-right again apparently latching onto this), all somehow ultimately being the the fault of this *progressive activist Jewish professor* (who as far as I can tell has sound credentials, and who one of his long-time students personally vouched for in this thread as someone who wouldn't have a disingenuous, racially motivated angle with this thing) for daring to break formation and have an academic conversation that scrutinized something on "the progressive side" that day.

Nope. Nope. Nope.

World isn't binary, folks. Hyper-partisan, radical, binary, "us or them" environments with constant purity tests demanding adherence to the pre-established talking point of the hour breeds ignorance, intolerance, hate, and self-destruction.

This is why we talk about things. This is why diversity of background/ethnicity/orientation/culture is important within an environment like a campus or a message board: not just as an outcome better representing the diversity of the population it's pulling its membership body from, but critically for the diversity of perspective that results from that intense microcosm you've built, and the insight and nuance of thought it can bring to each participant when they share an appropriately moderated space and each have a fair voice.

That's why we talk about things.
I missed this post the first and second time it made rounds, but on the question of “What’s the status of Gaf right now?” this provides pretty incredible perspective to how much the world, and GAF, has changed in a year and a half.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't returning because of resetera banning me. But I didn't come back right away, I took a very long hard look at myself before I decided what to do with myself next. I just know I feel better when i'm part of a community and I never like to burn bridges, which is why I didn't take my suicidal pill during the resetera split off.

And what did you see?
oddly William Hartnell before it faded back to an image of me.

Seriously though. I saw depression, self loathing, nativity and failure. I realized getting upset that resetera essentially burned me at the stake despite every good intention I had was a waste of strength. I'm slowly getting better at ending my history of self loathing.

Don’t let a bunch of loud dorks on the internet instruct you on how to feel about yourself. That is not real life and will achieve nothing. Live your life.

Oh and welcome back.

Welcome back dude, we are all individuals on our journey through life, games ... politics and without open conversation and respect we won't be able to find ourselves. Whether you are right or left, xbox or PlayStation or even put pineapple on pizza, we must help eachother.

I guess I count as OldGAF but I’m more active these days than before the exodus. I lurked from around 2006 then joined in 2009 but was never all that active in posting or making threads. The mind virus appeared in 2010 with RiskyChris being patient zero, then he got banned and it mostly lay dormant for a few years after that. Then around 2013-14 it started to reappear and I could sense the culture getting more toxic and outrage-focused, so I stopped posting altogether. It really fell off a cliff sometime around 2015-16 and I didn’t even bother lurking anymore because every thread was filled with handwringing dumpster fire yikes driveby bullshit. It just wasn’t worth my time anymore, though I think I may have popped back in a few times just to get shouted down about bullshit.

In October 2017, I heard elsewhere that there was some kind of drama going on so I came back to check it out. I was here when all the Ree idiots were posting porn links and account suiciding and I must admit, I quite enjoyed watching it all unfold. The schadenfreude was real because I had genuinely grown to despise this place. Then, shortly after that all went down, I noticed a few posters like @Dunki, @strange headache, @TrainedRage (and a few others I likely forgot, sorry) were still posting and having genuine conversations without all the noise and insanity. So I started posting again, albeit with a bit of trepidation at first, but found it to be a welcoming and rational place once again, so I stuck around and am now more active than ever.

We’ve since had a bunch of good peeps join us/come back from self-imposed exile and I love it here now. We have some shit posters too who seem to exist only to stir shit and racebait, but they’re not very bright and are easy to deal with. They’re pretty amusing to be honest and I do see them as part of the family, kinda like the retarded — sorry, I mean “developmentally-delayed” — red-headed stepchildren (sorry my ginga @TrainedRage, just joking).

I think the sense of community here now is as strong as it has ever been, at least since I’ve been coming here. The biggest thing is that we’re free to speak our minds without the PC bullies getting outraged at every turn. Having grown up watching the likes of Bill Hicks and George Carlin, it gives me great joy to see such babies get told where to stick it whenever they come back and wring their hands about wrongthink. Such an environment is conducive to humour and truth which then lead to camaraderie and a stronger community.

MIA since July 26th as he then was at the ER with no insurance.

And he has not posted since. So for all i know, it might be a brilliant cop-out from ERA or he legit has health issues/died.

I don't believe Blame would choose the former as that seems extreme even for his character.
Also gone from NeoGAF since July. I hate to say this, but acute pancreatitis usually takes one to two weeks to heal, not four months and has a significant lethality. Since he apparently had an alcohol issue, I hope he just went into rehabilitation and is not allowed to post on video game forums.

It can also be fatal. If it isnt health wise, giving he had no insurance, he might be in fiancial debt.

I think this tells us an important moral lesson though - That behind those characters we disagree with, hate upon, troll over, or agree on, they are people living lives completely differently from their online presence.

Personally I'm glad the overly liberal yet laughably intolerant to anything that contradicts their "truth" twat squadron fucked off and took the echo chamber mentality with them as whilst this place is much quieter than its heyday its much better without all the baying for blood at the first sign of independent thought or challenging opinions like a bunch of feral baboons.

I think of Era as a "containment zone" for folks who may or may not have a severe yet undiagnosed mental disorder that appears to be sweeping large parts of the digital sphere with its bizarre perspectives and antics and am grateful that such a place exists so the rest of us can freely converse on a myriad of topics with conflicting opinions and the occasional bitch fit as its so much more amusing that way.

It's much slower and less traffic than before so I think that really limits discussions. I've been mostly just reading and not posting since the Exodus from here. But I seem to see the same handful of either alt-right lite users arguing with the same liberal posters.

The new style of moderation has it's benefits but also huge consequences. You give these idlogical warriors an inch by tolerating abhorrent positions as long as they are well sourced they take a mile. They now have a space on the internet where they can antagonize the side they disagree with which attracts more of them.

Why is one side alt-right and the other simply just liberal? Explain yourself.

The posts I see here from that perspective fall outside of traditional conservative views oftentimes a more Hardline "alternative" view of the same basic positions. Hence "alt-right"

I'm also under the impression that this is their preferred nomenclature. If I'm wrong I'm wrong.

That is not to say I don't have problems with the way some liberal posters find ways to take offense to everything.

Either group allowed enough rope can hang the entire community. We observed what happened here when the liberal group was given enough rope.

Now it seems to be headed in the other direction. I certainly admit that I don't spend as much time here as a used to but from the time I do spend reading it's my opinion on the status.

edit: oh, and I never read the gaming side. haven't for probably 6 years so my opinions are only of OT

Moderation begs to differ.
How so?

Don't upset him, he lives in a world where every conservative is alt-right, and that's what they preferer to be called. Because....
You, in particular, are one of the posters I can immediately think of that instantly attack any idea or poster that doesn't conform to your view of the world. I didn't come into this thread with any malice, I explained why I used the word I used and yet here you are attacking me based on your preconceived notion of what/who you think I am.

Here have more rope. Moderation here won't take it from you.

Don't know if you're just being coy or what, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Calling someone alt-right is effectively calling them a Nazi by proxy and will annoy people accordingly. If you're planning to stick around NeoNeoGAF, I welcome you back, but you're likely going to have your world view challenged.

I even said if I'm wrong I'm wrong but that is what I thought the term represented and even sites like Brietbart use the term to describe the movement. I am open to having my worldview challenged. If I didn't let sites like neogaf challenge and ultimately help change my worldview I would have really bad opinions on homosexuals.

I hope you are willing to have your worldview challenged as well and don't respond to it by attacking those that challenge it like the person I quoted constantly does.
