What's the worst thing done by a company this generation?

I think instead of one company doing some terrible thing, the industry as a whole had no problems putting out unfinished games. There were more than a couple times that there would be patches for games on RELEASE day. Literally, the very first day the games are out, they have to have patches because they aren't done. I legitimately don't remember the last game I played on 360 that didn't require an update or patch. Some games are worse than others and some companies are worse at it than others, but it has become industry standard to knowingly shove games out with bugs and errors because "we can just patch it later".

What other industry allows for products to be shipped knowingly incomplete on a regular basis without massive backlash? Game consumers just kind of accept it, so the industry just keeps pushing the line further back. I feel like eventually you're going to buy the game and it is only the demo, with the rest of the game being updated much later.

But they said they can't. After 4 5 years working with PS3 they didnot count in the PS3s ram architecture.

Well, I don't know the exact policies behind it all, but in that case they should've come to that conclusion before releasing it on that platform, to consumers. For money.

I don't know why but I <3 this thread! Keep it coming!
Good coverage in the OP, it's pretty disturbing to see how easily this stuff is forgotten and sweeped under the rug.

Let me get this right. The PS2 was the most unreliable console ever until 2005/2006 and Sony's solution was fuck you.

The 360 then took the mantle off Sony, and as an apology would replace your console for up to 3 years and it's the worst thing to happen to gaming?

Mind you, it's not like the 360 failures affected EVERYONE.

When PSN got hacked, that affected EVERYONE. it's not even comparable. Your personal information was stolen.

How is a faulty console that gets replaced for free for 3 years even the same league as my credit card details being kept in a .txt file?

Sony didn't fix PS2s for free? They fixed mine in 2003 and I got mine in 2001.

Turning off servers for games with online passes by EA.

Actually I don't "mind" on disc dlc as long as they are clear that it's not included in initial purchase.

Sony and Microsofts poor console reliablity. Both PS3 and 360 have broken a few times apiece. Oddly I had far more trouble with PS3's than I did 360's though. That doesn't seem to be the norm looking at other peoples comments on the 360.

Valve and or Sony deserve a mention for adding exemptions for class action lawsuits. Valve's was particularly egregious for holding your games hostage until you 'agreed' to their updated terms and conditions. Disgusting behaviour.

This is a massive one; haven't seen anyone holding mine and everyone elses games hostage...

I still like how Sony justified the high launch price of the PS3 by saying that saving for expensive things teaches children discipline.

It just seemed like such an unbelievable thing to say at a press conference.

My pick is RROD. Everything points to MS knowingly released a faulty console early to get an edge on Sony and Nintendo. I don't understand how people can defend that.

Diablo III auction house. They ruined their franchise with open eyes. They knew exactly what would happen before hand and how this auction house would completly contradict the original game mechanics.

They didn't do this because they were stupid, but out of sheer grief. For me that was the worst thing which happened this generation. It's like everyone looked at it, but no one had the balls to say why this concept is pure shit (I had though). And now that it's too late, people start complaining.

Crapcom

- DLC too much expensive already on the disk
- Mega Man (all incoming versions) canned
- Devil may cry to Ninja Theory
- Too many external non japanese devs for important games like Dead Rising 2, Bionic Commando, others
- Shitty game worst than flash or amatorial for XBLA and PSN (tragic example: SSF2THD)
- No more Maximo, no more Onimusha

THQ still selling Homefront PS3. It's literally broken, you can't play more than 10 minutes without it locking your console.

Konami leaving Xbox customers in the lurch with the SH patch.

Activision. Where to start? Making Bizarre develop a shooter, then a MK clone, marketing neither, then close the studio. Putting Raven on CoD map pack duty. Having their IT guy rifle through West and Zampella's emails and shit. Locking MW3 DLC to one console, the only time this has even happened on 360 AFAIK.

Sony not marketing the Vita properly.

Ninty not adding a second nub to the 3DS XL.

But they said they can't. After 4 5 years working with PS3 they didnot count in the PS3s ram architecture.

Then the game should not have been released, and a full or partial refund should have been offered to those who were scammed.

While it doesn't quite match up to the depths of scumminess that was RROD, Bethesda ought to be fucking ashamed of themselves.

Came in here to post this. Bought a PS3 when FFXIII was still supposed to ne exclusive and I'm still pissed off with them for the way they handled the announcement.
I seriously don't understand why people care about this. You still got to play it right? The superior version no less.

Is your complaint honestly that 360 owners got to play it as well? Who cares! More the merrier and all that! It seems very petty to be annoyed that they decided to allow more people to play it.

As a one off event, RROD was disgraceful, but I don't think MS will make the mistake twice.

On Disc DLC I think is the most terrible one of the bunch since it has set a precedent that is only going to get worse.

Ha ha, I uh, I do own a 360 as well.

And you bought the PS3 version of skyrim after Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas were by far the worst on PS3? You know what they say. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Fool me three times gullible is not in the dictionary. Fool me four times I was dropped on my head as a child.

Retail exclusive pre-order DLCs, by everyone.

We're supposed to pre-order the game on multiple retailers to have access to all the content. Pathetic.

Glad I live in Scandinavia. We get all that shit in our "nordic edtion" of the games. Check out my Lollipop Chainsaw, I bet some of these were stupid retailer exclusives?!

Then again we should get some compensation for our high prices :(

Actually Oblivion was better on PS3 than on 360.

The dumbing down of level design by the entire industry is a joke. You can literally just draw a straight line on some paper and that's it in a nutshell.

This is why I never liked Half Life 2.

But the linear design is especially bad in MMORPGs. Spot A for quest group 1, which gets your character to level 3. Spot B for quest group 2, which gets your character to level 5. Spot C for quest group 3, which gets your character to level 7. And so on.

It's like we're all too stupid to use our brains for one second or to handle any bumps (much less spikes) in the difficulty curve.

Entertainment is less entertaining when it's so predictable.

People continue mentioning RROD while omitting the fact that Microsoft went to great lengths to right their wrong.

At least all Pre-Falcon-360s should have been called back.

They didn't even remove the old models from the shelves when Falcons were already sold!

Fixing these faulty pieces of shit was the least Microsoft could do.
I hate the fact that people actually think that this alone is good customer-service.

Xenon and Zephyr were just ticking time bombs that should never have been sold in the first place.

Not to defend PSN hack, but I was actually more mad at VideoGamePlus.ca when I saw all my infos (name, email, encrypted password, address, credit card details etc.) on a pastebin document easily reachable by Google.
It took them 3 days to notify me and another couple of days to take down the file. Who knows how many people downloaded that file.

That's when I started using multiple emails and password for pretty much every website/store; thank God I discovered LastPass.

That said, On-disc DLC are just awful

RROD, never before have I owned consumer electronic product that was as faulty as the original 360's, and then to top it off initially denying that the problem wasn't as prevalent as it blatantly was, 1 billion dollars even for MS couldn't of been an easy pill to swallow to fix that one.

From an objective standpoint, it's got to be EA's general assholiness with trying to remove Rock Band on iOS, Online Passes etc.

Personally I find it kind of evil that Nintendo released a new 3DS without adding a second stick OR giving an alternative, like I know that Capcom made the CCP, but it's a true dilemma when you want the 3DS XL and want to play RE:R or MGS3DS but basically can't because they haven't released the necessary accessory.

On disc DLC isn't as bad as people think they are.

For the most part, like Cliff said, it's all about adding the necessary code so the game works with the upcoming DLC, while in ME3's case, it was just bad planning since they added a new team to create the DLC after the game had gotten past that phase of the production. I think it was more laziness + more general profit so in Bioware's defense, most companies would've made that decision to release From Ashes as DLC and not as in-game material.

I never owned a 360, but the RROD fiasco has got to be one of the largest scale douche moves this entire generation. I don't know if I can quite give it the top spot, however, because at least MS eventually agreed to just extend the warranty of all 360's indefinitely and repair them. It's not excuse for having released a broken console, but at least they tried to save face.

For me, I have to give top (dis)honors to the motherfucking Silent Hill HD Collection. While Skyrim's PS3 release was an absolute travesty, at least they eventually ironed out most of the egregious wrinkles several patches later. The Silent Hill HD Collection can never be fixed. Its problems are too numerous and intrinsic to be fixed via patches, evidenced by the gigantic patches that have been released for it while hardly fixing anything.

Silent Hill Collection could have been one of the best-ever HD remaster jobs of this gen, but Konami decided to hand off the project to a completely inept team. Never in all my years have I seen classics treated with such disrespect for both the source material and the fans. I get so fucking angry just thinking about it that I want to throw myself through a window. Fuck Konami and fuck Tomm Hulett.

1. The unacceptable RROD. Completely fucking ridiculous. Like.. wow...
2. Ubisoft and their shitty anti-piracy crap and PC delays
3. Paying a fee to play online on the 360
4. Everything Zynga has done
5. EA being EA
6. Crapcom. Everything that has already been listed
7. Saints Row 2 port to the PC

This is why I never liked Half Life 2.
I don't remember the original Half Life being anything else than very linear, too...

(just a remark, HL is still a great game, and I prefer games like that with some exploration... I like how Bioshock was balanced on this matter)

Despite not being affected by it, I'm gonna say RROD/YLOD. When it happens, it really pisses you off because you can't play your games and if you don't have warranty then your shit outta luck. It's definitely something these massive companies should have discovered, after all they have a massive pool of knowledge and talented people. Probably due to the suits though, they ruin everything.

Following that would be the PSN security breach. Not hashing credit card information is fucking stupid. Not only that, EVERYONE was affected as Sony hastened to plug that hole.

After that would by Skyrim PS3 debacle. Bethesda knowingly sold Sony fans a broken product. It's really despicable and while they'd rake in less money by being upfront and saying it doesn't work on PS3, they'd at least retain some goodwill but that's been tarnished now.

At least you got notified. :-) Many of us didn't

Level design, or lack of
Mac Walters and Casey Hudson
Ubisoft's ridiculous PC delays
DICE and their inability to actually patch their games without breaking something

I'm sure I could think of a few more but these are really just me nitpicking, I couldn't care less about PR fuck-ups.

The head of Sonic Team blames fans entirely for "negative perceptions" of their games:

GFkbW.png

After the releases of the dismal Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 and eventually that one with the werehog, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka was asked by Eurogamer as to why, he feels, there are endless "negative comments" about his games. The response:

Its nothing to do with the games being sub-par, oh no. Its entirely 2D fans wanting 2D games, and 3D fans wanting 3D games, that has led to unrecognised gems such as Sonic 2006 receiving "not positive" comments. It takes a special type of company to blame your low reputation on the fanbase.

(GAF THREAD)
Note that Iizuka only became the head of Sonic Team in 2008, also Sonic 06 and Unleashed are not his games, he was barely involved in those 2.

Ugh, easily one of the most condescending things I've ever heard spewed by any company. How ridiculous.

Wait a minute, we can blame sony about psn hacking, show it how incredible unprofessional & incompetent, or to remove the OS option (I think it is even illegal) but blame a company because tries to justify the console higher price or for the stupid pr claims are those the weird things who a company can do? O.O really? It's just weird promotion.

"Buying used games is worse than piracy"

Worst thing this gen for me is the idea that consumers should be punished for not wanting to pay a completely arbitrary but oddly industry standard price for a product.

Part of the reason for the success of digital titles this gen is the less than $20 price tag of the majority of them.

Developers producing 'me too' crap in an effort to chase big money, usually at the cost of what made them interesting in the first place.

Example:

Bioware Exec: "Hey, Mass Effect only made 20 Million as opposed to Gears of War which made 50. Clearly, we don't have enough push A for awesome."

Maybe not to the same extent, but last generation, PS2 disc read error was pretty awful and widespread. I went through 3 and we never got a replacement plan thing :(

My friends and I all had a similar issue with the PS1, where we'd constantly have to open it up and adjust the strength of the laser to get discs to read without skipping/freezing. Console build quality has been pretty shitty for the last few gens.

RROD and 3DS region locking are the ones that affected me the most.

Other OS.

Easily.

Did that many people actually put Linux on their PS3s? Was there even any point? I bought my PS3 after this feature was removed.
