What's your list of must play PSP and PSOne games...

Oh wow I missed those two Fear Effect games were up on European PSN.
They're a must PSone games, :D, no idea how much time since they are online but them will be one of my next psn purchases.

Some obscure gems for the psp I'd recommend(don't know if they're on psn):
N+: similar gameplay to super meat boy.

Kingdom of Paradise: just an all around good game. Worth checking out.

Gundam Vs. Gundam Next Plus: definately worth getting if you're a Gundam fan, still worth getting if you aren't though. It's a really good 3d fighting game. It's only in japanese, but since it's a fighting game it really doesn't matter. You can look up a translation online.

So I'm going to keep myself under control and just buy ONE PSP/PSONE game for my Vita.

Thinking of going with one of the following:

-CTR (No multi might hurt this one)
-SFA3 (Same as above but having a good portable SF game must be amazing.)
-Suikoden
-Suikoden 2
-Tactics Ogre (Kinda expensive)
-War of the Lions

Not sure what else. Having a difficult time trying to decide...

My current wishlist includes:

PSP
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Metal Slug Anthology
Final Fantasy IV
Jeanne d’Arc

PSOne
Chrono Cross
Grandia
Xenogears

I already own some others that I would also recommend, like War of the Lions, Power Stone Collection, Valkyria Chronicles II, and Vagrant Story.

Thinking of going with one of the following:

-SFA3 (Same as above but having a good portable SF game must be amazing.)

Street Fighter Alpha 3 comes as a PSOne Classic and the PSP Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX, so maybe someone can chime in and recommend the better version. I imagine the PSP 2006 release.

Must plays for the PS1? All the Crash Bandicoot series. At least one of either Final Fantasy 7/8/9. Pure classics.

Recommended: Spyro, lots of other jrpgs, Wild Arms ( personal pick ), Mega Man X series, Disney games.

PSP? P3P. Shout out to Jeanne D'Arc, FFTactics, Peace Walker, Tekken & Soul Calibur and Valkyria Chronicles. Also racing games if you're into the genre, lots of good ones on PSP I've heard.

*Edit - oh shit hey Slixshot! :)

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

That's it.

Great game, undeniably.

Though for the PSP/Vita, you can just buy Dracula X Chronicles for (I believe) less money, where it is included (as an unlockable) along with the original and remade versions of Rondo of Blood.

PS1:

Crash Series + CTR
Spyro Series
MediEvil
Metal Gear Solid
Castlevania Symphony of the Night

PSP:
Locoroco Series
Resistance: Retribution
Patapon Series, especially 2
Killzone Liberation
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker

I came in here to post two, absolutely essential PSP titles:

They are each "top 3 status" of their respective series.

Here's a few choice suggestions rather than a huge laundry list.

For PSP:

Persona 3 Portable $19.99 - I haven't played the PS2 version, but didn't think that the PSP version was lacking. I guess 3D environments a la P4G would have been cool, but the fast travel probably shaved 5 hours off of my playthrough, at least, and the direct party control is indispensable for many of the boss fights. The game has a great story, and many great characters. Not quite as polished as P4G, but still a hell of a game.

Patapon 2 $5.99 - One of my favorite games ever, and the best in the series by far. Scratched my loot, strategy, rhythm, and 2D game itches all at once. BUY IT.

Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy $19.99 - A surprisingly well done made, 3D fighting game that pulls from all corners of the FF universe. Really fantastic, feels like a fast paced mech fighting game but with final fantasy characters.

For PS1:

Metal Gear Solid $9.99 - The grandaddy of all stealth games is still great today. Also not super long, which is a plus in my book. IMO, the best MGS available on PSP (but not Vita, that goes to 2/3).

Vagrant Story $5.99 - Final Fantasy meets Metal Gear Solid meets DnD. This game is very obtuse and sometimes punishing, but it is worth it. One of the most rewarding games I've ever played, and it has great post-game content/NG+.

Suikoden $5.99 - The prequel to the best JRPG ever made, and a great game in it's own right. Great world, story, characters, battle system, and graphics. The whole package.

For both:

Final Fantasy Tactics/War of the Lions - A really great game that you will see recommended a lot. Some annoying archaic aspects, even in the remake, but if you like SRPG, you'll still love it.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night/Dracula X Chronicles - Not my favorite metroidvania, but still a damn good one. The game looks absolutely stunning on the Vita OLED as well.

Note: I'm leaving out a lot of games that aren't available on PSN.

The only reason I actually got a PSP was for Peace Walker, but getting MGS and RE, RE2 and RE3 on there was just a bonus.

Really should look into some JRPGS, been years.

There are a shit load of PSone and PSP games I love that aren't on PSN, but here are the ones I've enjoyed the most. I can recommend every single one.

PSP

Ridge Racer - 60fps loveless. The sequel is better, but isn't available on US PSN though. EU/JP folks can get it.
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together - Best ever SRPG, and one of the most engrosing, amazing games I've ever played.
Wipeout Pulse - Best handheld Wipeout, and plays like a dream on the Vita.
Power Stone Collection - Great ports of Power Stone 1 and 2. What more do you need?
Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max - Another fantastic port. Looks stunning on the Vita, and the Vita's d-pad is a huge improvement over the PSP.
Persona 3 Portable - I preferred Persona 4 Golden, but P3P is a wonderful game.
Capcom Classics Remixed & Reloaded - Perfect ports of the best Capcom arcade games. Strider, SFII, G'n'G, Final Fight...
Tekken 6 - Amazing port that pushes the PSP way beyond what I thought it was capable of.
Jeanna D'Arc - Approachable, streamlined SRPG. Tactic Ogre trumps it, but this game is a gem.
Tomb Raider Anniversary - Brilliant remake of the original PSone game. Right stick camera controls on the Vita are a huge improvement
Ys Oath in Felghana - Fast paced ARPG. Plays like the overworld bits in 2D Zeldas.
LocoRoco 1 & 2 - Inventive, fun, looks and sounds amazing. A top-tier iOS game before they were even a thing.

PSone

Tekken 2 - This consumed my life back in the day. It's still got it.
Metal Gear Solid - Best MGS ever.
Resident Evil 1-3 - Dark room + headphone = gaming boners.
Ridge Racer Type 4 - Kind of redundant if you have Ridge Racers 2, but awesome none the less.
Final Fantasy VII - Only main line FF games I've liked.
Breath Of Fire 4 - Beautiful sprite work on decent JRPG.
Vagrant Story - Novel take on JRPG.
Shenryu - Awesome Raiden style shooter.
R-Types - R-Type 1 & 2 in one package
R-Types Delta - Pretty much the top tier of horizontal shooters.
Bloody Roar 1-2 - Fun fighters, with simple controls and sweet graphics
Crash Bandicoot 1-3 - Look and play geat after all these year.
Crash Team Racing - Best non-Mario kart racer (and better than most Mario Karts to boot).
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Easily the best Castlevania. A phenomenal game.
Castlevania Chronicles - SotN is far better, but this game is still awesome.

Hmm... Off the top of my head and in no order...

PSP:

- Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
- Metal Gear Acid 1&2
- Brave Story
- Patapon series
- Echocrome
- Jeanne d' Arc
- Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
- Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops
- Lumines series
- Dissidia Series
- Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
- Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

PSOne:

- Final Fantasy VII - IX
- Resident Evil 1-3
- Metal Gear Solid
- Breath of Fire 3 & 4
- Xenogears
- Wipeout series
- Ridge Racer series
- Gran Turismo
- Suikoden II
- Parasite Eve 1&2
- Crash Bandicoot series
- Mega Man X4
- Castlevania Symphony of the Night

Probably forgetting a bunch too for both systems...

Nothing. I've played everything I wanted to play on both systems. I would however love to revisit Silent Bomber if it were put on PSN. I'd also snap up In the Hunt if it were made available.

I want to go through all the quality JRPGs I missed during the PS1.

PS1 RPGs on the Vita, where do I begin?

My region is Hong Kong.

Does anyone know if Alone in the Dark (PSone) works on Vita now? I know it should but I think it had some compatibility issues.

Also, thanks everyone for the great lists.

I can't believe nobody suggested Mega Man Powered Up to you yet:

Playing as bosses is extra fun:
