When did 1080p become the standard gaming resolution?

A long ass time ago on PC.

On consoles? 8th gen.

On PC? Like a decade ago. Maybe even a little further back.

PC always been ahead when it comes to higher resolution adoption.

When 1080p monitors became affordable and lower resolution monitors started to become phased out.

1440p is about to become the new 1080p.

On PS4 in 2013 pretty much, save for the odd game. And then the 4K push happened rather quickly after it. On PC for much longer, I think during the 360 gen.

Europe with its retarded Full HD moniker lol. Whats 4K then? Fuller HD? Its like the Full House comeback.

With PS4 in 2013... over 90% of the games started to run at 1080p.

You can say that is not PC but PC mininum is related to what consoles is delivering and the ties with lower resolution only started to break after PS4 pushed the standard 1080p.

You will see a new jump in PC specs (generating a push in hardware purchase) with that new generation of consoles again.

I got my first 1080p monitor/TV in 2010, samsung 2333hd, not sure on the standard but one of my buddies had an even higher res monitor, I think it was 1200p, 16:10

on pc? i'd say the late 2000s, early 2010s. PC games like crysis Warhead (2008) were benchmarked at i think 1650x1050, which i think at the time was the mainstream resolution, with 1920x1200 being the high end resolution at the time. So I think around 2009-2010 it became mainstream, maybe 2011. on consoles, it became mainstream around 2013-2014 with the ps4 since it mostly pushed out 1080p as its standard resolution (though some games upscaled from 900p for performance sake).

so on PC, 2009-2011
On consoles, 2013-2014

When TV's adopted 1080p as the HD default whenever that was, PCs and Consoles where trying to catch up since then until this last get when it became not really a challenge.

Sadly 1080p still isn't the standard for consoles but we're pushing 4k/faux-k and RT.

Gimmme dem bells and whistles, competent AI, physics and destruction before you nudge up my res.

I guess your best bet is just to look at steam surveys on the Wayback Machine. For example the most popular resolution was

2011 January 1680x1050 https://web.archive.org/web/20110210112400/http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/
2011 April 1920x1080 https://web.archive.org/web/20110515095236/http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/

So according to Steam anyway at some point in 2011 between January and April 1920x1080 started to become the most popular resolution.
Gosh darn laptop users!

According to Steam, almost 70% of users still use 1080p as their primary display resolution (Link).

I have two 1440p screens on my PC and love them (I was an early adopter). The resolution is a pretty big deal though as it allows people to get away with a lower-tiered GPU. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if it becomes much more popular, although I don't think it will overtake standard 16:9 aspect ratios as the most popular.

I'd say 1440 is or is becoming the standard right now. 4k just isnt worth it imo.
It's not even close according to Steam:
  1. 1920 x 1080 - 65.67%
  2. 1366 x 768 - 9.14%
  3. 2560 x 1440 - 6.75%
  4. 1440 x 900 - 2.99%
  5. 1600 x 900 - 2.31%
  6. 3840 x 2160 - 2.30%
  7. 1680 x 1050 - 1.73%

Around 2009. That's among hardcore PC gamers, i.e. the kind of people who build their own desktop PCs specifically for gaming. Needless to say, most people who game on PC don't do that. It wasn't until one or two years later that 1080p became the most common resolution for full-size laptops and cheap monitors, and that's when you see it taking over on Steam.

There is still quite a big price difference between 1080p and 1440p gaming monitors. in the UK the cheapest 1440/144 monitor is about £300 compared to 1080/144 at £150.

Also people tend to keep monitors through multiple PC builds and playing a game at 1080/144 at Ultra settings still needs a decent GPU in many games, especially if you enable ray tracing.

1080p imo gives you most bang for your FPS buck

i think the next big gpu series 4000 or more likely 5000 will change the standard to 4k, both from a tech standpoint and budget standpoint

4K is Ultra HD. This is not a European thing.

This exactly. PC gamers require 60fps minimum and until recently 4k60 was not really viable for the majority of games. As 4k60 becomes more standard (on PC) more people will start adopting. Many have made the half way move at 1440p.

Me personally I have been waiting for a card like the 3090 to officially make the jump to 4k.

While true, I personally own a 1080p144 screen (and a 4k60fps), not gonna buy a 1440p, I jsut want to skip that resolution fully. I'm getting a new PC right now and I will have 2 options - to play at 4k60 or at 1080p144, max details of course, I think it's a good balance. So yeah, owning a 1080p screen doesn't mean low tier hardware, since high refresh rate screens exist (and my friend has a 1080p240 screen too).

People way off with the dates. When 360 launched in 2005 at 720p, Many PC gamers were already playing at 1080p. Sure it wasnt all PC gamers, but mid to high end rigs were playing at 1080p.

Back then I think a lot of people actually had a 16:10 monitor, something like 1680x1050

I think the TV industry basically just led to the market getting swamped with panels in 16:9 format.

Its not crazy really. The vast majority of PC gamers view 60fps as console gamers view 30fps, as in its the minimum they will accept. high refresh montiors are prevelant, and the VAST majority of PC gamers play at 60+fps.
Streamers like DrDisrespect, with his NASA pc lol, he plays at 1080p. Its all about the frames.

It started at around 2005, but in effect PC gamers were going 1080p in mass at around 2007/2008.

I remember In 2008 I got an excellent 1080p 24' monitor at a pretty cheap price (less than 250€ if I remember well).

Yes most monitors back then were 4/3, but you get what i meant.

16:10>16:9. I miss my 16:10monitor...
That being said I find it very hard to use 1080p on anything larger then 24 inches. A 16:10 1440p (1600p?) monitor would be absolutely perfect.

1440p is nowhere close to 1080p on PC. 1080p is like 10x more popular then 1440p at least according to steam stats. 4K will be much more popular in more artistic circles like design and photography than even 1440p.

As much as I love 1440p for gaming, I don't like anything but 16:9 ratio for anything else. There are some games also I prefer in 16:9. It is a bit of a trade-off so I understand fully.

Actually many hardcore gamers were holding back the adoption of lcd monitors for a long time because of the big set backs of the technology. By late 2000 the thanks to 1080p monitors performance improvement and becoming cheap enough too, made the adoption almost instantaneous "overnight".

-if I remember correctly, the price drop was caused by the oversupply of lcd monitors on the market at that time

1440p is about to become the new 1080p.

And 1440p is really the sweet spot. 4k is really overrated compared to performance hit.
