When did men start shaving their sides on the head?

Whenever I see that haircut all I think about is how in 20 years time we'll look back and say "man those haircuts in the 10's looked goofy".

Off-topic, but is that how we're gonna say this decade?? "In the 10's" sounds pretty damn bad, but I can't exactly think of a better way of saying it

Can look good on the right person, as with any style. Although for some I think it looks better grown out a bit more, such as this photo of Xavier Dolan.

I know someone who had this hairstyle (and similar face), and it looked great.

This thread made me realize I`v had the same haircut for the last 18 years

0 on the sides and back one and half on top blended.
It takes me 15 days to go from clean cut to almost full afro then its haircut time again.

So much ridiculous talk. First of all, getting a haircut where you have short sides is not some new thing. It's what men have been doing for decades. It's classic barbering.

Secondly, a true undercut is basically as shaved on the sides as you can get. It has been around since the 20s.

Thirdly, it has nothing to do with hipsters anymore and is extremely mainstream now. Likely going to die out because of this until the next revive.

So everyone remember a fade is not an undercut. A taper is not an undercut. It's when you have a major disconnect between the top and the sides usually due to shaved sides that you have an undercut.

.

Pretty much, "What do you want?" "A 1 or a 2 on the sides and the back, leave a couple inches on top."

Fashion is a loop, I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple of years we start seeing (we are seeing it now, just not so commonly) 70s fashion.
I wouldn't throw away those disco pants, I'd probably start wearing them now to be ahead of the hipsters and become a hipster hipster
jk F that

Jimmy from boardwalk empire was why I started doing it. Getting a bit tired of it now though, I think I'll just grow it out and figure what to do next

The best thing about it is the low maintenance tho for sure

I kinda wanna do the haircut where the top is a normal short haircut, but on the back sides it starts into a fade and then turns into a little mohawk at the bottom...

anyone know the look? I need a photo to take to my barber.

Just a normal fade with a mohawk tail. Every Latino teen has either this or the op haircut in Chicago lol.

Something like this but not as long of a tail is what you're looking for. Let me scour the local Fade shop's website to see if they have any better pics

Undercut got popular again in early 2012 from Jimmy in Boardwalk Empire

Yep, this was it for me. I have very short hair usually, so I grew out the top/front to get that look. I just got rid of it a few weeks ago though, and gone back to having it short. It never really got long enough to do properly, and I've got male pattern baldness, so yeah that wasn't working out too great lol!

I think it's one thing to have a slightly thin sides. It's quite another to shave it off to the point that there's barely any hair on the sides while your top is full of hair. It makes you look like vegetable. Granted, some guys can pull it off but for most, it looks ridiculous.

It has always been there. People listening to EBM during the 80s, punk during the 70s, rock and roll earlier, and just simply through our entire history because it is a valid haircut.

I want to do something like this for spring, but a little less exaggerated. Also I have naturally curly hair. Short, not-completely-shaved sides with a slightly longer, messy top and front is what I have in mind, but I can't decide if it's a great or terrible idea.

Here's what I currently look like, as per my Facebook photo:

Could a pull off a less exaggerated curly/wavy fade? I think it could work. Be honest, though. I can take it.

Also, what ever happened to that men's hair thread?

I don't know when you men started doing that, but I think it looks good (well, depends on the face type and hairstyle, but yeah, mostly looks good, I like).

about 1940? (and probably way before that)

We like to call it the 'Hitlerjugend' haircut.

It's almost like attractive people look good no matter what. Shocking.

I thought you meant that stupid-looking thing that people around here (mostly middle-eastern youths for some reason) wear all the time these days where they buzz-cut the hair on the sides and leave a maximum of 1 cm of hair on the top. It looks so fucking bad. It's always asshole idiots that have it as well, so I've started to call it "The mark of the meatheads".

Undercuts are pretty fucking gorgeous combed back or not. Especially on women.

Also, undercuts != nappy fade. But I love nappy fades too. I rock that sometimes, but I can't live life without a fro.

It's a definite improvement over 90s skater hair. That right there is a stupid, stupid looking hairstyle. I want to punch any and every teenage sporting skater hair. An ardent desire to just slap some sense into them. As Steve Carrell put in Crazy Stupid Love when he said he hate his son's stupid hair.

This *****.

You seem pretty angry about hair.

We Eastern Europeans have been cutting our hair like this since forever. My Albanian hairdresser only knows this haircut and that's how everyone is getting. I think me might have stolen it from the fresh prince.

just sayin..

So your logic is "some women have this. therefore women only." Right.

Guys I know some girls who have fingernails you better get them things removed. And you can't have long hair. Or short hair. I've seen women have both those things. Also if your name is Alex you should probably change it because some women have that name.
